Off to the track again

I am going to go to the sprints again this month. I will be competing this time as well.

I know a lot of guys are off down to Wakefield but if anyone is interested in coming along to spectate or compete it would be great to see another RX8 out there.

Here is the link to the QLD Raceway web site.

Hope to see you there!

Sounds like a great idea. I will be away for the next race. however, I would love to come along as a spectator to the following meet to check out proceedings.

If it works out I may even look at racing in the future. I have never done any thing like this before, therefore its one step at a time.

skc - it is great fun. I haven't been in my '8 but I used to in the SS. Best $70 I spent. (+$25 for a 12month licence, and $80 for a helmet). Plus $2k for a set of slicks, plus an oil cooler, plut better brake fluid, plus, plus... Oops - hard not to get addicted!

There should be more of it :D It is the right place to get the "boy racer" in us out of our system. You really get an appreciation for fast driving. It is totally different to driving quick on the street.

Cheers,
Hymee.

I have only raced once and I loved it. I will not do this every month as it is too hard on the car but once you have done it it is addictive.

I have to blame Hymee for getting me into this as he posted a few months ago about going up there to have a look. Yes it is hard on tyres and brake pads but what do we buy sports cars for? To drive fast and to push into corners. This is the perfect venue to do this without being pinged by PC Plod.

Zoom Zoom....................................

Aint that the truth!!

L&L - I wonder what the "risk factor" is at Wakefield Park compared to Qld Raceway?

Cheers,
Hymee.

Good on you L&L,

Use that RX8 the way it should be! Look forward to seeing you there.

I am also looking forward to seeing how the Racing Beat Sway bars go on the track

The good thing about QLD Raceway is you would have to be a real D***H*** to damage your car.

It would be awesome to see 3 or 4 RX8 s on the track at one time

I will come along.

I have been out there before with a mate in his MX5.

I am in canberra until friday, but should be able to make it on the 27th.

I will race my RX8 as well. And it would be good to meet up with a few fellow owners.

Looks like we are going to have a few RX8s out at Qld Raceway on the 27th to either socialise or get out there on the track. Great to see!

Drag Race, I look forward to meeting with you . It will be great to see another RX8 on the track.

Hymee, pleased to see that you will be out there doing the social thing.

I can't wait......................

BTW I know a few other forum members are considering coming out or will be out there so it should be a fun day.

Having pootled about QLD Raceway in my MGB on a parade lap and passengered with several people at Wakefield (and spun out with them!), I'd say Wakefield is just as safe. There is very little to hit at either track with lots of run off. I'd also say that Wakefield is possibly "slower" than QLD Raceway.

At the last Rotary track day, most people who had an "off" were doing it on the slower corners on the "castle" which is one of the slower parts of the circuit.

In this photo:

you can see the control tower in the front left corner of the pit area. Racing is clockwise. You can see the large expanses of that all important subtance on a race track "nothing-to-hit" At the last track day, most people who spun were doing so at the part of the track at the top of the photo, or possibly as it comes back for the darker bitumened left hand corner. Most "real" racers who spin, spin near there, now that I think about race meetings I've been to.

OK,

Attendees to the sprints from the forum are:

On the track

RX8 - Smooth
Drag Toys
Haddock - (Maybe)

Pit Crew

Hymee
another undisclosed forum meber

By my reckoning that means we should have 4 or 5 RX-8s out there with 2 or 3 out on the track. This should make for a fun and social day for RX-8 owners. I look forward to seeing everyone out there.

Michael,

Details are as follows

1) Drivers
Drivers need to get there around 11.30 to fill in forms, pay, get their cars numbered (sunscreen on rear quarter glass) and drivers also need to attend safety lectures. There is a lecture for 1st timers and a lecture for regulars. The first time I went I went to both to get as much info as I could. The cars are grouped into groups of roughly comparable performance and driver experience and are let go in groups of about 7 equally spaced around the track. Overtaking is only allowed on the main straight although when I was there I blew past a couple of really slow cars in other areas & I also let through a couple of cars that I was holding up. I am going to be getting there around 11.00 as I want to grab an undercover bay along the pit lane.
I put my tyre pressure up to 40psi, check the oil, make sure the pads are ok and get rid of anything loose in the car. The first time I went they lent me a helmet but I have since bought one. All the other details are on the QLD Raceway web site which I posted a link to on the first post on this thread.

2) Social
The actual track time starts at around 1.00 from memory so if you do not want to get involved in any of the above this is probably the time to arrive. Mrs Smooth will be arriving around about this time with some lunch, kids etc etc. I went along with my wife in January to spectate and we both enjoyed ourselves. It is fairly busy out there with lots of different cars to look at. There is a fast food outlet there where you can buy burgers etc.

I hope this gives you an idea of the day and hope to see you out there.

Steve

Nice summary, Smoothy!

#1 son has an "all day" soccer carnival, but I will try to ease out of that by lunch time, and get out to the track.

Dont forget long sleeves and long pants. The "sunscreen" they use for the numbers is actually white shoe polish like you use on your dunlop vollies, or dad used to use on his parade gaters.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Thanks mate

I forgot one other thing.

If you download their entry form from the web and enter prior to the event the price is $65 instead of $75 if you enter on the day.
You also will not have to queue after you have filled in the form as it has already been done.

I didn't realise it was shoe polish - You learn something new every day!

Looking forward to racing.
One of my friends will be coming to watch, and video tape the day for me.
He is part of a BMW forum, and said there will be a few M3's attending as well.
So there should be some nice cars out there.

Yep there will be two M3's there on saturday. Oh - and they use masking tape for the numbers these days. The timing guys complained about the shoe polish.

Oh yeah - I thought I saw some tape last time.

Just do what some the LS1 boys have done, pre-register a number, and get some stick-on laser cut letters made. Looks just like the real thing. When I went out when my '8 was band new, the boys put a big #8 sticker on the windscreen.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Great to see everyone out there. What an awesome day I got my best time down from 1:13 when I was at the track last time to 1:07.9267. This car rocks! It is so well balanced and FUN to drive!

Haddock & Drag Toys were both out there on the track which was great to see. I think Haddock was 1:07.? but less than me, ah well! and Drag Toys broke into the 1:06 area!

I saw some of the photos and videos that Drag Toys took of the day and they looked awsome - I can't wait to see them.

Nice to see three RX8s out on the track at one time. Now I have to force myself to wait another couple of months before I go to the track again.

I had a test drive of the Hymee exhaust and was thoroughly impressed........................Where can I get the money from?

Good to see you out there Hymee - hope the Wakefield day goes well for you.

Zoom Zoom indeed...

Still haven't stopped grinning Great to see Smoothy, Drag and Hymee out there, and a pleasure to meet mr 200sx and Scooby B4 who put up with the rotor heads.

Best time was 1.07.25 for me. Can't wait to see uncle Nutter Hymee out there though... !

See you all next time.
