Motor Magazine helps our resale...NOT!
Latest issue of Motor magazine (April) has a piece on the RX8 as a secondhand prospect (regular 5th Gear column - page 118).
Morley admits up front he's never liked it. As in actively doesn't like it, so the outcome is pretty predictable. No grunt, doesn't get the suicide door idea, styling too busy and handling isn't sorted properly. Yada yada yada.
The real interesting thing is his choices as alternatives - 350Z, Alfa 147 GTA and Merc SLK230 Kompressor. Huh?? He's demonstrated beautifully that there's not much to compare the RX8 with, so you either buy it because it suits your particular needs and tastes or you don't...

The guy says he does not like that car never has so the whole article is pretty much BS.
I don't think one mag article changes anything on resell value.
It is a car it depreciates.
I really do not see the low bottom prices on these cars everyone is talking about, I certainly didn't when I bought mine in Nov, I had looked for over 8 months. Prices seemed to remain about the same the whole time I was looking and have not changed that much since I bought mine at least here on the Gold Coast.

That is such a subjective article and his silly opinion represents a small percentage of popular opinion on the RX8 I think.I was at the track yesterday and anyone who has driven an RX8 on the track would not say that.It puches way above it's weight class in terms of track times and handling vs dollars spent. My mate brought his new porshe boxster along and rather than it being a close days driving I managed to lap him easily each and every session of the day(and I am no top driver either, average at best).. Only a brainwashed holden or ford fan would write an article like that.

He's never been my favourite person but the article confirms what a meathead he is. I agree that on its own it's not going to affect resale but it certainly hasn't bloody helped.

The biggest issue that will affect resale values is Mazda dealers who (persistently, it seems) wrongly diagnose a problem with coils or cat, and then quote $14k for an engine rebuild. And fixing that is entirely within MA's control.

I have to agree, there isn't much to compare it with. After lunch on Saturday, we drifted across Wickham St. in the Valley to checkout the Audi TT again. Salesguy asked what I presently drove ... "well, it's not a sports car like the RX-8", he opined. NIce to have an opinion like that from an Audi expert!
By the time you get it on the road it costs 20K more.
At $20 a week more to run that is 20 years to make up the difference.
Until you realise that the Audi will eat the difference in servicing and spare parts.
A Clio would be a better car than the TT.

Ok, I get the bit about no torque, and I can understand that some people don't like the look. But handling not properly sorted... WTF? Handling is what the RX-8 does best. It's the only aspect of the 8 that I have seen consistently praised in all the other 'reputable' publications.
I wonder how a stupid comment like that got past Motor's editor...

It's all a plot to prepare us for our diesel future (cue Revolver)
I must admit, after the 8, torque is nice. But I miss the 8's handling. It's sublime

2008 annual road test.
Mazda RX8 is one of the 2 runner ups selected for best sports coupe.
Mazda MX5 wins the gong, and the other runner up is the Audi TT.
