Import?

Hey dudes

I'm new and newb on here so please forgive me for any mistakes i do. haha

I'm lucky enough to have any first car i want (parents are shouting & yes i'm a youngen ) And as far as i know i'm glad that i'll be choosing an RX8.
Can you guys please help me out with the pricing of second hand RX8s? What to expect? Etc. Note: I'm based in Melbourne.

Since my budget is abit tight (anything less than 45,000) i was thinking of importing an RX8 from Japan since its alot cheaper. Can someone please tell me if importing the RX is a bad thing? And is there much difference?

man.... i hate you. your mom and dad are giving you 45K to get any car you want. ill tell you what you want. take the 45K. get a used rx8 in the US. manual costs about 21 or 22. take the remaining 24K and email me for a list of mods that create the best and most moded and a damnb fast rx8 and you will still have 4K left over for gas money.

No disrespect but advertising the fact that your daddy is buying you an RX8 is going to get you into a lot of trouble.

Notwithstanding, it is not worth the trouble importing the 8. I don't know anything about importing but do you really want to buy a car that you haven't driven?

I don't understand people that import cars. You might get lucky but more often than not your'e going to get a car with no warranty, no help from Mazda Australia (I'd assume) all just to save a a buck here and there.

Import a car if you can't buy it here. Otherwise i think your'e better off buying domestically. And those salty Japanese roads blow.

If I were you, here is what I would do. Buy a Daewoo Matiz, 2nd hand $5000 - invest the $40k you got left over in shares. You'll live longer and will have a house deposit at the same time when you are ready to move out from your parents.

I take it you haven't lived in Japan for the last 12 months. Have you checked to see if your Japanese car can be registered here? I believe that it can't.

LOW VOLUME COMPLIANCE
Vehicle importation is conditional to it being complied to Australian Design Rules (ADR) immediately it arrives in Australia by a Compliance Plate Holder (CPA). To become a CPA a company must provide evidence to the Federal Office of Road Safety (FORS) that the vehicle meets each ADR. Where the vehicle does not comply with an ADR, the CPA Holder must show how they intend to overcome it, with the use of engineers plans for modifications, or alternative parts etc. This process can take up to 2 years to complete, and only then can that CPA holder comply up to only 25 vehicles per year.

The vehicle must also meet certain criteria at the time of the CPA Application, such as:-

it must not be available in Australia from the manufacturer,
the vehicle must be considerably different to that offered by the manufacturer,
if it is a passenger vehicle, it must not have 4 doors if newer than 1995
So dannyboy....just who are you trying to kid??

If you can't buy a used RX-8 for sub 45K, you aren't looking hard enough.

well, i was wondering if i could get a better deal by importing it. The 60 RX-8 on sale, a majority of them are not leather packed. I was hoping to get a leather pack.

I was also wondering, is RX-8 considered to be a high powered vehicle? You think i'd get pulled over alot since I'm on my Ps?

And i thought this car was bought exclusively by Engeneering types Geeks computer and otherwise old Farts going trhough MLC (MID LIFE CRISIS ) And not young rich kids in IDB (IN DADDYS BUSINESS )

Best piece of advice i can give him is to get aquanted with his local panelbeaters , and if he hasnt got the cash to fix his car he may as well invest in some Vaseline LOL LOL

Well, the good news is, dannyboy, that if you and your Daddy go to an auction house such as Pickles, you'll most likely pick up a leather pack 8 -- possible still with warranty -- for under $30k. They've recently gone as low as $26k, with an '04 LP selling for $28k. Pickles has 2 at its next auction in Sydney on Sept 3.

Much cheaper than importing -- oh, BTW, you can import anything...but registering it is another matter. V hard to register an imported car that is currently sold retail in Australia -- unless you have owned it for 12 mths o/s. I didn't make the rule....the existing car mfrs and importers did!!

Far out. I didn't cop half this much trouble when I bought one...

Oh danny dannyboy...

And no, the RX8 possesses no where near enough power/torque to be classified as high-powered in NSW. Buy one and you'll understand...maybe.

Man these are fire sale prices might fly up to Sydney and pick one up for spares , a pov pack one would probably sell for $21,000 mind you all seconhand prices of cars have taken a dive of late including late model Mercs and porsches .

Cash is king , as well as my shares in PHOSPHAGENICS code POH for those that are interested

Hey Dannyboy,

Us older types who had to earn the money to buy ours (as opposed to just doing what you should have been doing anyway - i.e. working hard at school) are not exactly gonna pull the violins out for you.

Having said that, you've now been given good advice to scour the second-hand and auction market, which I endorse.

Far as I know the 8 is okay for Victorian P-platers but surely you can check that out for yourself.

This car has plenty of power for a novice driver and, if you're anything like most young male drivers, you'll be able to get yourself into real trouble, real quick. If you do go ahead, for the sake of your folks, do some defensive driving courses and leave DSG on AT ALL TIMES until you have more experience.

Good luck.

Here's the catalogue for the next one: http://www.pickles.com.au/servlet/Au...sale=103000362
There you go Michael -- I reckon you'll pick up another Yella for a bargain basement price -- only 31k on the dial
