Illuminated gear knob

3 Attachment(s)
I was very fortunate Ryan (Rexy1900) from RX8.club sold me his illuminated gear knob after the initial sale fell through.

I had it installed by Mazda today and it cost me 1/2 an hour labour = $49.00.

The job actually took them 1 1/2 hours as they broke the wire when putting it in, and had to re-solder it to get it right (I hope it holds).

Anyhow, heres a couple of pics, which also shows off my stainless strakes which were put on at no extra charge at my last service.

The extra illumination on the gear knob makes the interior look that extra special of a night....and it even runs off the dimmer switch!

Nice one sarge!

Ive never really been a fan of the rotary shaped gearknob and my illuminated gearknob is sitting in my drawer.

Been there since about 2 weeks after I got the car,

If only the gearknob was more ergonomically designed I would have kept it.

Nonetheless, I hope you are happy with your purchase!

What gearknob did you have on it before?

Drew, I had exactly the same type as before, but of course without the LED light.

I'm not sure about your 'ergonomically designed' gearknob. Have you got one different my previous one (pic attached) and the one I now have?

DrewMan 11-04-2007 01:48 AM

Nah its the same on. just in black and red

the rotart shaped knob justr didnt feel right (too many edges)

So i opted for a Sparco Litum (in red and black of course!)

It seems a shame your other gearknob is sitting idle when you could be getting good $$$$ for it....

I also don't mind this one....but in the carbon fibre colour.

I'm thinking about getting one of these. Bit ricey but I like them :)

Anyone know if they are an easy DIY? Drew, interested in selling?

enforcer 11-04-2007 05:13 AM

Well I've got to admit the interior ambience of the interior of a night is very balanced....and very cool.

If you are installing it yourself I would recommend replacing the solid copper wire with the braided variety.

Good luck twisting Drews arm....

Done a few of them for various Rx-8 guys since 2003. Broken the wires on the first few. Be careful, can be tricky & catch you out. The power wires break very easily.

Have a "New" one floating around too complete with broken wire.

Easily soldered back on......:evil_laug

does it permantely stays on the moment you start your car?

XLR83N 11-04-2007 04:29 PM

That it is how it comes if you follow the standard wiring.....comes on with the parking lights.

DrewMan 11-04-2007 05:53 PM

yes my one is broken too and requires soldering.

I thought I had a non light up one until i took it off and discovered some wires

Enforcer, how much did you end up paying for the illuminated knob if you don't mind me asking?

MissyK 11-04-2007 09:49 PM

I think the illuminated light would have been better if it showed what gear you were in rather then just being lit at night.

I was very lucky Andy Wana...right place at right time. $200 and $10 postage = $210.00, and it was sitting in Ryan's (Rexy1900) drawer since new.

I think they normally retail for around the $550.00 mark....
