High Pitch Whine

Hello fellow 8 lovers :D

My manual black 8 makes a high pitch whine after the engine is warm. The pitch doesn't change with revs and is constant whether idling or moving. When the engine is shut down, the whine stops of course but it dies down instead of stopping abruptly. Sounds like a sound made by air instead of mechanical. Has anyone encountered this? Is it normal (as I've been told by the servicing dealer - and we ALL KNOW how trustworthy they are) and if not is there a 8-GURU I can take my car to? Thanks.

Sounds like your cooling fan is coming on too soon , it could be incorrectly set needing adjustment .

Once the car gets over a certain temperature the cooling fan comes on automatically to keep temperature constant stops overheating , during warmer times and spirited driving the fan can stay on once the engine is turned off for up to 15 minutes .

Cant advice you as to a rx8 guru because i dont know where you are .

cheers
michael

I don't think so. Since the fan can be on even you shut the engine. It knicks in a different circult and operate from the coolant temp and the fan control. It is on until below a certain coolant temp.

I have no idea until I hear it life, but I think it is not from the engine. Maybe the air con.

It doesn't sound normal and I think Taka has a point, turning the engine off shouldn't stop the fan straight off. My fan is audible and is a little whiney but not really apparent from inside the car.

Water pump?? Strange in a new car? Try an alternate dealer and pick one of the gurus in your town to pm and hook up with if you need a second opnion. Most of them don't bite.

And guru selection, lotsa posts is a good indicator......or is it??????:p

I lost count of how many times people said, " I agree with Taka" and "Taka has a point"

I wish I have a dollar everytime I hear those nice comment from you guys ....
(if so, I would have paid for my turbo now :p)

Mate, on a serious note. I must be a moving part not related to the engine, so the pulley, belt, or the engine itself is out. Otherwise, it should have a noise related to rev, or at least change the tune of noise.

Try to turn off any electrical thing to isolate the source. I will turn off the air con first to see if it stop the noise.

I think it is the fuel pump also. Pop the bonnet and turn the ignition to ON without starting the car, then get out of the car and stand over the engine bay. I think I know the sound you mean. It sounds like a little electric motor or pump running. I believe it is the fuel pump.

If that's what it is, I'd say it's normal. It's actually quite loud when you get your ear near it.

The fuel pump is under the rear seat, in the tank.

It'd be the air pump, I'd say. This pump discharges air into the exhaust ports to assist in emission reduction. Gives the cat a helping hand.

oops sorry. I'm in Sydney. It's not the cooling fan though as the sound is different. It's really hard to describe.... here's a recording of both before warm up and after having driven for about 10mins. Zipped file is too large. I'll do another recording tomorrow and post it. Thanks everyone.

No mods. Rotor spinning to 9k is a lovely sound and I don't mind it at all...

The sound is still obvious with the bonnet closed. I don't think it's serious, just a little irritating.

Sounds similar in frequency to a quiet noise I get when the engine is on but not started. Gomez, does the (primary) air pump run even if the engine isn't started?

It's not the sound I was thinking of then. Sounds like an air intake whine to me. Does it get louder while you are accelerating? The sound is similar to the noise you get with an aftermarket air intake.
