Seems my software problems stems from the fact that I don't have Pervasive SQL.

Looking at prices seems this thing is damn expensive at approx $1400 for a 5 user licence.

Since there a lot of IT pros on this forum, can anyone tell me if there is a cheaper source for this software?

which version are you using?

 

I don't have any version, but my maintenance people tell me I need Pervasive SQL 2000 Service Pack 3, 5 user.

My current software upgrade keeps crashing whereas the previous version had no probs with a database engine so I never got one.

 

2 questions:

1. How much per day is it going to cost you to have your system out of action?

2. Doesn't the supplier of your practice manager software also take responsibilty for the underlying d/b and keeping it up to date and maintained?

IMHO, if the answer to 2 is "No" and 1 is >$500/day, pay the money and get the fix

Practiceworks, just got version 5 beta and have had the system crashing ever since.

My query relating to SQL was that I got quotes from $595 to $2050 for what I thought was essentially the same thing. Turns out that what I require is Pervasive SQL 2000 service pack 3, 5 user. What most people were quoting was Pervasive SQL V8. Software will be arriving Tuesday and it will be back to business as usual.

It's times like these that you wish you still kept paper charts

Actually, I am not very happy that you were encouraged, or not warned against it, by your software vendor.

IT people like that irritate me. I didn't bust my guts at Uni and my Career to have cowboys like that tarnish the profession.

Agree with Hymee. If any IT guy offers you software in a commercial use environment and mentions 'beta' in the same breath, make sure you at least takes possession of at least one of his ********* before he leaves. :p

These are not IT people these are sales people rushing the IT guys to work faster and faster to offer more and more to the general public.. The more bugs the more promises it will be better next time around and they will continue to keep you in the market until you need something else etc etc.

I dont use any software that has beta/Release/Edge etc as they are all related to applications that still have not been through the proper beta testing/ environment testing etc.

Well, look at it from my perspective.

I have to slave away as a consultant in the IT industry, barely able to keep my habit of drinking bottles of Grange and expensive polish vodka. Not to mention the RX8 I have to maintain.

Sometimes I even have to stoop to drinking beer (Coopers of course, not of than Lion Nathan or CUB swill). Then there are the other expenses. Do you know how much Armani suits are these days? Sometimes you feel like you need to settle for Hugo Boss, but you know you won't like the sniggering behind your back.

Then you see these Dentists. AMG, for example, has MORE THAN ONE Mazda! Shameless I tell you.

 

but you see, we have to charge exorbitant fees to make up for all the down time our IT people force us into (I think it's a conspiracy actually, the IT industry is creating it's own market).

Grange........I can't even afford to think about it

 

But the IT people only charge that much because they need to ensure all their salespeople have those winning smiles. Those smiles cost a lot to maintain, and we need to recoup the costs from somewhere.

If you can't afford to think about Grange, and you don't want to do the whole Bin 389 thing, then my tip / secret for the day is the "Kabminye Hubert Shiraz". Beautiful dark wine from the Barossa from low yielding organic grapes that have more than once been sourced for Grange. The vineyard owner has decided to make his own wines now, however.

I'm not sure when you can buy it from in town (Melbourne St Wine Cellars or East End Wine Cellars maybe?) but if you head up towards Tanunda from Gawler, and take Krondorf road on your right it is a couple of kays up. Lovely place for lunch too, they do rabbit and nebbiolo pie.

the wine is about $35 a bottle.

 

Sounds like a nice drive for the 8. That area had some real cozy bead and breakfasts to stay, may make the trip one day, but I'v got to provide some more winning smiles for those IT people so that I can afford to pay my IT bill and have enough left over for the weekend

Tanunda is only 1 hour away from your Dentistry. Just have an extended lunch break.

You could go up to some of the wineries around Ashton and Summerhill and be back within an hour.

Or, for the scenic tour, head south to Mclaren Vale, swing past through Clarendon and Macclesfield, through Currency Creek and Goolwa and down to Langhorn Creek. You might need to stay the night there. Next day, down to the Coonawarra and Penola. Stay the night. Next day up to the Barossa via Banrock Station on the Murray. Stay the night. Next day, Clare Valley, and then back to the city. Lovely trip. A few hundred kilometres, several dozen wineries and $10k later, you will have had a nice little driving and wine tasting holiday.
