Heat Shield Recall
Had a call out of the blue today from Brookvale Mazda.
The girl who rang asked if I had been notified about "the recall from Mazda". First thought, given current events stateside, was to think engine compression check. However, on further quizzing she said it was to install a heat shield for the exhaust. She didn't seem to know much more than that.
Now, she caught me at a bad time and I couldn't immediately recall, but I'm almost certain I had this recall work done last year! And I certainly haven't received another notice from Mazda.
The only other thing I can think of is the engine mounts, which I understand can be heat affected, but I've had them replaced too.
As it happens, I'm due for a service anyways so I booked it in with them tomorrow. Will keep you posted.
Gomez, oh recall guru, any thoughts? Admin error on their side (e.g. thinking I somehow missed last year's notice)?

Got my letter yesterday for the fuel tank heat issue.
Really wish they didn't send it to me 3 days before I take it to Wakefield to flog it 'round a track!
Mine is due for a service later in September and I'm about to get a Hymee catback so I'm gonna get them to:
1. Do the routine service.
2. Do the recall work.
3. Instal the Hymee. :D
4. Upgrade my starter motor, battery and plugs (if they will do it ).
I've also got my car finally booked in next Tuesday to have the panel damage on the rear offside quarter repaired (my dude has been flat out with insurance work and hasn't been able to get to it until now).
So come Nats time I'll have a schmicked up car (and a lighter wallet )."

i thought my battery was going dead recently so i enquired at essendon mazda & they replaced the starter motor, plugs and battery and the whole lot was under warranty - bloody ripper

Well, well, well. Pleased I could engender so much mirth and ribaldry. 
Regrettably, the girl from Mazda wasn't on hand to, cough, 'service' me this morning
but I did get the skinny on the reason for the re-recall.
Apparently, 'some' heat shields have been installed in the wrong place
(apparently, there are two similar places to install it and 'some' techs have picked the wrong one 
). So, Brookvale at least, has decided to recall the RX8's it has previously administered the recall to in order to check it has been done properly. 
Not sure if this is going to be a national thing or Brookvale just worked out they had employed an imbecile tech last year
and it's a dealer-specific fix. Suppose it wouldn't hurt if you all ask your service guy to have a quick look 
next time your car's in.
And yes...it IS a gun in my pocket!

Can you tell us were the correct spot is for the heat shield placement , been lying under the car but cannot for the life of me figure out how they could have made this mistake especially when they get detailed drawings telling them how and were to put it .
Hopefully we have brighter tecks here on the Goldcoast than you have in Sydney .but then again some poor bloke in Victoria got his swaybars rear put on back to front LOL LOL

Hopefully it's an isolated problem but at least they're checking them out. Gotta give them credit for not just ignoring it.

Okay, got some more info on this after a brief cross-examination of my service bloke.
Apparently (you'll see that word a lot in this post
), Brookie's techs discovered a car where the heat shield had been installed on the wrong side. They reported this to Mazda's field manager and they were instructed to recall all cars again.
Apparently, the first diagram sent out by Mazda for this recall work wasn't that flash and there were some isolated instances of tech's interpreting it incorrectly and installing the heat shield on the wrong side. A later diagram was apparently much clearer and cured the problem.
Apparently, nobody knew techs had made this mistake until the car referred to above was discovered and, by working backwards, they believe the first diagram was the culprit (I'd suggest apprentice brain fade myself ).
Apparently, Brookie have checked 175 cars but only found 3 that had the incorrect installation. Guess who owns the 3rd one! 
Apparently, the incorrect installation would not have had any effect on my car (or me I guess, since I haven't been blown up) and I'm assured everything is all now hunky dory.
He was unsure whether other dealers are doing anything about it but if it can happen to me it can happen to you. I'd suggest you get them to check it next time you've got it in for a service.
Otherwise, normal stop-gap service (i.e. between 25K and 30K but 6 months since the last one) and I've stocked up on the MRO. Will post service costs in the sticky.

I remember something about this a year or so ago. The reason for it was something about cars spontaniously combusting under extreme driving conditions ...

The letter that I received specifically said that there was a risk of fire.
I quote "... a fuel tank leak may develop which has the potential to result in a fire."

Ha Ha...yes you need to be carefull around here Cromax, this thread could have turned into anther 30 pager about that latest fault with the RX-8 that never actually was.
We really dont need that at the moment. In fact, on the actual topic, does anyone know if there was an actual fuel tank in Oz that needed replacing?

No need to be so literal. I didn't say what I originally said was a direct quotation from a Mazda bulletin did I? Everyone who owns an RX8 should know what I meant considering we all received the letter.
