happy hymee exhaust

hi to all,
just thought i would relate my experiences with the hymee exhaust.
Having waited over 9months and enduring an inflationary price rise i finally dodged my wife and secretly ordered my exhaust. Haha, good christmas present for me
Booked in with my mechanic for a quick changeover, but of course there were some dramas along the way. After heating the crimped join area the intermediate pipe refused to come away from the muffler, yes i know there is a 1/4 turn. After much wiggling whereby the pipe deformed alot, it came free, but only after slicing my hand. Bastard. The orginal clamp also had rusted a bit and ended up stripping the threads when removing, so it was discarded for a new one.
Hymee why don't you make a nice stainless intermediate pipe with the flange so it bolts on neatly???

So now it is on nice and new looking fan..bloody...tastic and sounding awesome. The first time i drove down the road i nearly wet myself!! It was so fruity and alive it really gives the car much more character. Extra noise, bass and top end rotary buzz are the obvious attributes, but it is the louder popping sounds and grumbling that give the car character. So good.

My state of pcm tune is unknown, however i have notice heavy sooting and a reluctance to start on hot days with a hot motor. In the last week of driving around since hymeeing up, it is apparent that perhaps the car is leaning out the mixture. There appears to be little sooting, the fruityness and popping sounds have diminished and generally the tone of the car is alittle more subdued.....could it be the exhaust carboning up???

Power wise i feel as if the car is a bit more responsive mainly at lower revs (funny that) but the extra sounds make it feel so much livelier to drive. Visually there are some patches that look like corrosion on the pipe, but i will try to wipe them of later....the car is getting serviced today.

If you guys are interested i will get back to you after the service.
Thanks to the guys for giving me feedback on their experiences.

cheers
dan

I reckon my one carboned up a bit after the first week. It seemed too loud for me for the first two days, but mellowed up nicely after a week. They are glass wool packed, so maybe the packing compacts and settles a bit in the first few hundred kays.

I suppose there is a lesson to be learnt about the rusted clamp. Buy and fit a Hymee Catback in the first months of ownership .

Dan

What happen when your wife finds out...

I always said this before I show her what I brought, "Honey whatever I do, I love you...." She then said," what did you buy this time?"

Dan,

That is a good question, and I thought I had good reasons for doing it the way we do. The reasons for going the way I have gone are...
  • Why replace a perfectly good 2" mandrel bent stainless pipe, with another 2" stainless pipe one?
  • What about the Mild Steel option?
  • Additional cost of making a new pipe, compared to the short adaptor pipe we supply.
  • Could do it cheaply in "press bent", but then it is inferior to the factory part.
  • Adds costs to shipping.

Sometimes people have a little trouble getting those two pieces apart. The last one we did almost didn't need the oxy! rx88er and apapag have watched closely to see how difficult it really is... They should post there impressions!

Thanks for the nice review! I really like your descriptions of how the exhaust sounds to you. Great stuff. I like it as well

Cheers,
Hymee.

Yeh thanks Hymee for dragging me into this one.... :D
I did have the pleasure in watching Hymee and his offsider get these two pieces apart and I have to say it was funny watching these two work. It does take a little effort to get it apart but in saying that it all happened within a couple of minutes. I suppose you need to know what your doing.
My exhaust did sound very loud for the first week or so but then settled down to a really nice note which only gets violent when you give it some. All in all, I'm very happy with the exhaust. Hymee, where do I send your invoice for review?

Haha....

I bet you can't say this in front of your wife, "Look at that stainless steel Hymee exhaust, Honey. It is nearly as pretty as you."

Well done Dan.

sometimes i just dont understand..... why would your better half stop you from "adding" stuff on the car... but its perfectly okay for them to buy shoes/fashionable items all the time

anyway, i liked the sound of the hymee exhaust on 8A8Y 8, from memory, i think its mild steel.

Just to clarify. My installer had some problems when installing my Hymee (used interesting combinations of well known words, but let's just assume it was comeoffyabastard ). It's not any problem with Hymee's product, it's just that the original joint to the OEM muffler had been overtightened at the factory.

Hymee, I suggest you make the additional piece an optional purchase for those who want to do it at home, and don't have an oxy kit.

As to the tone? Perfectly happy. Yes, a bit loud for the first few days but my installer said that would diminish as it 'carboned up'. Really puts silly grin on my face as I leave Canberra in the early morning -- after pootling through my suburbs during the first 10 or so minutes, then turn onto a nice double lane uphill section of the Federal Highway ... and enjoy a quick dose of 9,000 rpm in second and third :D :D

I don't have my Hymee exhaust (yet), but just out of interest what speed are you doing in 3rd @9000 rpm (as I can exceed 100km/h in 2nd at beeper)
Or perhaps a public answer may not be wise

Hymee, a quick question: have you had noise testing done on your exhaust system? I read in the latest (Brisbane) Westside News that the police are issuing defective vehicle notices on cars with noisy exhausts in conjunction with the crackdown associated with the "anti-hooning" legislation.

Labrat,

I have posted elsewhere that this exhaust has been tested in accordance with ADR28 and it passes with flying colours. No worries about the police then. And I don't hoon.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Great, I'm sure you don't hoon. There was no suggestion you do. I'm pleased that it conforms. I don't follow every thread. It was a legitimate question, since so many of your customers comment on the sound.

Labrat,

No problems. Perhaps what I replied sounded slightly harsh, but it wasn't intended that way.

Just my 2 cents for Labrat. There's no way Hymee's exhaust is in the same class as those that my be emplaced on hoon vehicles. FFS, I'm an old bugger (now) so there's no way I'd put up with such noise, either externally, or the drone that might manifest itself inside the car. A big thumbs up to Hymee in producing something doesn't scare the natives :D
