Inspired from discussions by Revolver and DMRH in Dannys thread....with all the hype and hoo ha over the years, if anyone thinks the RX8 has poor ecomony think again.

I have the same economy with my new 2.4 litre Grand Vitara .....!

 

My 2.4L Camry (12.5L/100km) is only marginally better than the RX8 (14.2L/100KM).

I think the Camry or the G Vitara is way too heavy for the 2.4 donk, V6 version will have better fuel economy over the 2.4.

This sounds like the logical approach to the situation to me... The RX8 is a fairly lightweight car, and the motor is known to be fuel inefficient... It is a design drawback to the motor.

 

When I first own a car a litre of unleaded costs 59 cents....

My RX-8 does 16L/100km, mostly in road speed, it does not see highway often (~10%).
My Kluger goes anywhere and it does 14.5-15L combine drive.

I only did 200km on my 135 and guess what... it has the best economy so far, <12L/100km. I don't baby cars

I think 14-16L/100km for the RX8 is pretty good considering all the funs the engine gives us, of couse less is always better.

BTW, Taka, seeing you as a senior member here, I have a question for you: when my 8's engine is all warm up, I can feel some "uneven" pulses through the seat when idle, I'm not sure whether you call this as rough idle or what, or could this cause by the pops from the exhaust? The Tacho needle seems unaffected when I feel the pulses. The pulses happens about every 2-4 seconds, and not continuously. Should I be worried?

I got asked this question all the time. This is normal... every car has it, something related to the rotary engine but I just cannot pinpoint what does that. I have been knowing that it is just normal rotary rumble

Yep, the RX8 has similar economy to a porky SUV. Most other performance cars with 6 cylinders or less have better economy (e.g. Bimmers, Porkas).

It will drink more fuel the harder you drive it.

It does what it says on the tin, which you should have read before you bought one.

I know the bog standard Territory sucks about 17L/100km in actual use.

Agreed the 2-3 tonne tanks are the worst but buying Klugers and CX7s for family purposes isn't exactly hug a tree, is it?

I've never bought into the whole SUV thing for family truckster duties. A stationwagon or decent sized sedan does the same job for less running costs and is usually more fun to drive. The taller cargo space in SUVs is generally not worthwhile unless you're transporting bulky loads often like bikes, etc. A wasteful image statement rather than fit for purpose.

Our 4.0L V6 Pathfinder (200kw) drinks 16l/100k around town. My last fill on the RX was at 14L. There you go, just in case you were wondering.

 

My Mazda 6 does about 8-10L...

 

from a full tank to the empty line i get a fraction over 400km per tank, mostly suburban driving (4/5) with some city driving (1/5)

 

I get between 12-14L/100km on my daily commute. That said I have a lovely tollway and barely any traffic to worry about anymore which is terrific!

Driving down Springvale Rd in heavy traffic, I'll get 14-14.5L/100km.

Contrary to Dave's comment on driving the car hard, I find that it doesn't matter how I drive it, the economy always stays about the same. The worst I've done is 350-370km on a tank ... and that was with my foot to the floor!

 

I definitely go thru fuel faster when I drive it hard. Even more noticeable on track days, which admittedly isn't very relevant to real world consumption.

 

Anyone ever worked out trackday fuel consumption? That would be interesting.

 

Someone did it once. From memory it's in the high teens to low twenties...

 

Depending on how I drive it I get around 13L/100km from the RX8. My previous car was a Ford BA XR6T which averaged 18L/100km and before that a E36 BMW 320i which averaged around the 14L/100km mark.

So the RX8 is the most frugal car I have owned in the past 8 or so years, and definitely the most fun, even though it's not the quickest.

On the topic of consumption, has anyone noticed that the last quarter of fuel seems to disappear a lot quicker than the first 3/4? Is this normal? I have noticed my wife's Honda Civic does the same.

 

Yeah, that's because the tank is narrower at the bottom, as compared to the top.

That can't be right, surely? I have to drive into Goulburn to fill up at lunchtime, and I can't be doing THAT many Ks on the track!

 

Check the new 911's economy stats. Now that's frugal!

Otherwise, buggered if I know. Perhaps the gauge accuracy differs depending on the amount of fuel in the tank. I've certainly noticed the same thing in most cars I've owned...

 

I'm going off memory but it wasn't as high as I thought it was. In the twenties I think. Why not test it out yourself this year and let us all know...

FWIW, I've done track days at WPR starting with a full tank which has lasted me the day and got me home again...
