First Oil Change
I am nearing 5000km and was wondering if I should get the oil and filters changed.
When did you guys have your first oil change and how much did it cost?

first major service @ 6000km exact.
Hornsby mazda and cost was about $195
dunno if I can recommend this dealer, but giving you the price so you can use it as a reference to get a better deal perhaps =)

I change my oil and filter every 5K. Every 10K is a scheduled service, so I have the interim (5K) services undertaken by a rotary specialist in Canberra, and the 10Ks by the dealer. I pay $80 for the interims, $varies for the scheduled
I reckon you need to do oil changes regularly on the 8, especialy if you are using the mazda mineral oil. my reasoning for this is mineral oil dosn't handle heat very well and everyone knows rotarys get hot and the oil takes a fair chunk of the heat load.
I'm thinking of going to a full synthetic as turbo owners swear by it; a lot of rotary owners do to.

My first oil change will be next week when I get the 10k service done....and the "G" flash! I've used about 2 litres in the 10,000 kays....it's only been redlined twice :o .

I'll let it go for now, but any oil arguments - out comes da knife!!
Cheers,
Hymee.
I'm thinking of using vegetable oil... it seems to handle the heat OK in my deep fryer. I'm thinking peanut oil might make the exhaust smell nice. Although I hear olive oil is the only way to go because it has only good oils, not bad oils. Any recommendations?
Depends how you drive.
I changed twice - first time at 6000km *(with just city/highway driving) then at 10500km (with 1 track day). Now I am at 13000km and thinking of changing (with another track day on board) and changed oil filter each time - coz it is cheap. I guess you can leave the oil filter if you change oil every 3-5000km but I will not leave an oil filter for more than 10000km.

What is the oil change interval in Europe, Hymee? (Saru goes and searches: 12500 mi! (20,100kms) - is that right?)
I will attempt an answer:
1) Mazda EU has no forking idea.
2) AUS oil change intervals are too long
3) (Northern) Europeans are in the habit of changing their oil to take into account winter and summer temperatures, a fact that is not taken into account in the standard "oil change interval"
4) ummm?

No, 2 virgins.
I guess we have just about screwed this thread then. I think we have flogged the issue to some sort of climax.
I'll close it in a few minutes. Just enough time for some final one line witty replies
Cheers,
Hymee.
