Exciting Development - My exhaust is no longer black!!!
I took this photo after...
It was apparent Yesterday morning that there was something different - the tips were not sooty. I decided if it was like that by tonight, I would post. So here it is.
I wonder if my oil injection is blocked or not otherwise working!!
Also not the nice new Yokohama 245/40ZR18, freshly scrubbed. :D
Cheers,
Hymee.
- Filling up on Thursday night
- Washing my car and polishing the tips (with Autosol metal polish) on Friday morning.
- Driving around Friday (getting tyres)
- Topping up with Castrol R oil on Friday night, about 2 litres.
- Driving around all weekend, including some very spirited, but legal, driving.
- Filling up again this morning
- Driving home tonight from work.

C'mon Hymee, admit it, you put on a new exhaust to take those photos didn't you?
Either that or you used the autosol inside the tips as well.
That's very bizarre how clean the inside of your tips are.

WTF?
2L to top up your oil... that's one thirsty oil metering pump (OMP)... when did you last check?
IIRC the Oil Metering Pump gets a test every x ignition cycles.
Maybe Wideband O2 or Cat Temp sensor problems causing you to run lean??? But you should get a MIL for that.
Or have you found a magic distance switch in the PCM that causes the fuel map to change???

Or the car wash fairy washed your car again. IIRC that curly black dyno had a couple of off road sections... and your car doesn't look that dirty

So many questions!!
Interesting, hey?
Cheers,
Hymee.
- That is the original #2 exhaust system that the jig was made from.
- I did autosol the insides of the tips, but only the first 2 inches or so.
- It isn't really clean, but rather a gray soot, rather than black. The old timers used to reckon a light grey colour meant she was tuned properly.
- I never topped up the oil since the last service. I got one momentery oil light when stopped on the steep drivway at work into the basement, which prompted me.
- Yes - there was a couple of agricultural experiences on Saturday, and I did "wash" the car again. But it was only a quick hose down of the paintwork and a chamios. I didn't touch the tips. And the tips are grey inside, not "QR Brown"
- Not running any piggy-back etc. at the moment.
- I wondered about the "magic mileage" switch.
Interesting, hey?
Cheers,
Hymee.

Come on Hymee, you just found a new way to blantantly plug your exhaust and post another image without actually blantantly plugging your exhaust
Great soot.....have you switched to a steam engine buring coke.

Yep - it is November. In fact, we are 2 days into it. Since when have I been one to hold back posting information when I have it?

Sunday was Halloween....
I think there is something supernatural going with your exhaust Hymee. Time for an exorcism!
That is the strangest thing I've seen all week. It can't just be from hard driving, because we've all done that before and the exhaust ends up black as buggery.

Hymee,
Run an AFR check with your Hymee CAN OBD tool.
EDIT : I'm now realising that "my" avatar (there purely for advert purposes) could be confusing on forums where the real Hymee is present too!

Hymee
Have to say (having bought and am currently awaiting delivery of my Hymee exhaust here in the UK) what concerns me more than the tips is the state of you're plastic surround in those pics
Looks like a big hole under the tip in the surround where it's either melted (though looks abit "too neat" for that) or it's been hacked away, maybe after it melted?
Would like to know

Snelly,
I was slightly concerned people may have seen that, but I have openly discussed that issue before. This did not happen on a track day, or during spirited driving, or stuck in traffic, or on a long drive on a hot day.
It actually happened when the car was doing some hard work on a chassis dyno - you know like 1 hour pretty much hard work at various load and throttle openings, frequently up to 100%. There is no airflow around the rear end of car on the chassis dyno, so there was nothing to take the heat out of the exhaust. I am convinced the same thing would have happened with the stock exhaust - why do you think they offer the aluminium exhaust finishers...
The plastic melted and hung down in big globs. We just snapped it off, and it ended up looking like the photo. I have 2 band new ones here at home, and the plan is to get molds made, the make carbon-fibre replacements to offer for sale.
I hope that explains it for you, and adequately addresses your concerns. Out of all the RX-8's with this exhaust on, including all the ones that have done track work, there has not been any problems with melting exhaust pods other than mine.
You wont have any problems!
Cheers,
Hymee.

Yes but getting back to the original question, how did you find yourself polishing the inside of an exhaust pipe!
I think you need to check our some of the bodywork Nojooc just posted and pick up an extra hobby!
