auzoom- "we" all went in to RB that day having the issue in mind. when we saw the housings laying on th etable we immediately were drawn to that nick we took pics of and reported about- it seemed confirmation at that time.

but people seem to miss that RB later told us that that particular engien had blown when testing it with an FI system that destroyed itself on the dyno. there have also been numerous engines torn down in the mean time- some port porting like guitar junkie does and other just during normal race rebuilding times- that have shown no evidence of that side seal issue that Ito was talking about.

zoom, thats basically what I thought I had said

While I understand that engine blew due to FI and Engine Dyno testing, did I miss something where it was agreed this wouldn't have happened without the FI?

Wasn't it agreed the nick in the side seal was caused by the edge of the port? Isnt it still true that it could it have been avoided by having the edge smoothed off?

Basically my thoughts are that while maybe unlikely to get the circumstances where it will happen, couldn't Mazda avoid the issue by smoothing off the edge of the port so that if the seal DOES come in contact with the edge, it wont damage it?

Cheers

Yes i have read post 54 however deserve my right not to agree with it /or with THIS

timbo wrote:
Michael...are you aware of any engine failures in Australia similar to those in the US?

Yes there has been quite a few engine failures here in OZ both within the 2 % or so active forum members and other non forum owners .

Spoke to a Mazda teck from Mazda AT aspley Brisbane AND AS HE STATED ALL VEHICLES WITH ENGINE FAILURES CANNOT BE TOUCHED BY AUSTRALIAN TECKS BUT MUST BE SENT BACK TO JAPAN FOR EVALUATION .

So no one here in Australia can truly tell us whats really causing the ENGINE FAILURES .

We have experienced all the problems the RX8 has had in America also here in Australia ALL RX8'S are built IN the same factory in japan .

Example

LOWER controll arm recall .

constant ECU upgrades .

heat shield fix .

Catalyctic converter failures .

Spark plugs failing prematurely

Flooding of engines

Engine mount failures .

Engine failures .( causes unknown )

etc etc etc these are the ones that come to mind

Just because not all failures have effected all owners doesnt mean they dont exist .

Michael, you may not agree with what I posted however it is the truth. Mazda Australia do not have a pending engine recall for the RX-8.

I said earlier in this thread that the US have their own set of issues. They had a heap of flooding issues from their earlier flashes, their climate has introduced problems we don't have here, their oil is too thin for some of the conditions they operate their cars in etc. Most of our engine failures are coolant leak related.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the recall.

Only time will tell , dont get me wrong i sincerely hope that all OZ RX8.S are not effected by all the problems in USA , but unfortunately i think some of us will be .

With only 4100 or so cars sold here in OZ and with most owners towing the line Mazda OZ may sweep it under the carpet as they have tried to do with other claims .

REPLACING ONE ENGINE MOUNT NOT TWO .
NOT REPLACING ALL BATTERIES AND STARTER MOTORS UNLESS THE OWNER YELLS LOUD ENOUGH .ETCETC

Michael , my thoughts exactly. As I have already stated I would be very surprised if this recall didnt include ALL rx8's internationally. If we are dismissive, and dont ask and query this with Mazda Australia, only then could it possibly be swept under the carpet. I think that it is important that ALL of us contact Mazda Australia and voice our concerns about this .

Concerns about what exactly??? Concerns about RX-8's in the USA with failing catalytic converters and power loss in high temp climates??

Ridiculous.

If Mazda recall RX-8's here, they'll recall them because Mazda Japan told them to........not because some hysterical owners went berzerk on the 1800 phone line.

As Michael has pointed out, the dealers don't pull these engines down if they fail. That has been a well known fact forever here. Mazda Japan have access to every failed Australian RX-8 engine. They'll make the call....not you and I.

Info I received on Friday suggested we wont have to worry about this recall. That info came from the Technical Dept at Head Office here in Melbourne.

Things may change and we do suffer this recall. I hope we don't, and I don't think we will.

Cheers.

Last time i reported a recall on the lower controll arm , Mazda Australia said it did not affect the Australian cars , they emphatically denied that there would be a recall here .

I even had a MAZDA teck ring me and try and tell me that our cars had different lower controll arms than the ones in USA, SO NO RECALL WAS WARRENTED.... BS

Low and behold they were WRONG and recall was called after all the denying .

Some people have a very short memory .

People with short memories also forget that the US have had an RX-8 recall that we didn't get here.....

In 2004 the RX-8 was recalled in the US for an airbag wiring harness defect. Didn't happen here, because we didn't have the problem.

If we have a recall for this issue, they'll probably just carry out a reflash. Maybe program the MOP to inject a little more oil or something. That helps maintain compression......not that we've had that issue here!!

Hold out for your recall Michael......your lucky numbers might yet come up

If there is a recall i will be on my own as i have already past the warranty period , and lost it , so i dont feel mazda will go out of the way for me

Anyhow my car since the aftermarket cat replacement , and a few other adjustments thanks to my rotary mechanic is running better than ever i have no problems with power loss only liceence loss due to speeding .

Mazda has known about problems for a longer time than they have admitted , they have been caught out too many times before , i am just triyng to keep the bastards honest , and make other owners aware .

If there is a recall, you won't be on your own. You will be recalled. Free.

Recalls are independant of warranty status.

Interesting to see that all US rx8's have just been offered an extended warranty to 5 years.
I reckon that it also wont be too long before we also hear some news locally on this.

Maybe this is also ridiculous but who knows.! I doubt that Mazda would give preferential treatment only to the yanks.

I understand some of you guys (Michael, rexi) have concerns over this, but let's be careful not to jump to conclusions without specific evidence.

Whatever Mazda's past track record, there still seems to be no evidence that the issue the subject of the US recall is an issue for anybody here. Indeed, Gomez and some others have posted sound reasons why it should NOT.

If it has affected someone here, hopefully we'll hear about it and can then decide whether our interests are being protected by Mazda Australia.

In the meantime, the only thing this kind of talk achieves is a negative affect on resale values.
