End of financial year-what should i offer?

Hi guys,

Yes its me again. Yes I'm asking for advice on what kind of prices to expect to pay for a new 2005 RX8. Wife approval is gotten and the purchase is 99% certain. I'm from Perth and rang up a dealer who told me that 60,100 is the driveaway for a pov pack and 66,200 for a leather pack.

Obviously this is the list price....and from previous experience, its going to end up with the sales guy telling me its not up to him blah blah blah and for me to make an offer which he will draft up for his manager's consideration blah blah.

So I guess I am wondering how flexible these prices are and what should I offer as a cash price without trade in. I know some members of the forum work at dealerships (nojooc) from memory . I am guessing that floor mats would be standard, and I am not really interested in any other accessories (I prefer a clean look). Any advice would be appreciated.

I am very tempted to go for the pov pack and the dealer tells me there is only one coming in the color I want and that is in August. But I don't mind the leather pack if I can get a comparatively good deal.

I'll be going tomorrow to take a look! Wish me luck.

Good to see you back

Latest on-road prices I have seen (East Coast though) are:
c$62K for the Limited Edition ("Shinka") which has light coloured leather interior and sunroof, suspension and some bling; and
c$60K for the leather pack

I haven't seen anyone post a recent purchase price for "the lightweight performance model" but I imagine, given the above, it should be c$55-56K. (I have the....ok, pov pack ...and am 100% happy with it)

I think those all generally include mats and maybe tinted windows in a couple of cases, but I'm not sure if the purchasers had a colour selection or just took what was available.

So, it's coming up to 30 June....find a hungry salesman/dealer...and do your thing

Set your price (say, $55K cash for the pov pack) and don't deviate. They'll come back with a higher price -- don't be moved -- just ask for an extensive of extras -- mats, tinted windows, mobile phone install, reverse sensors etc etc (look at the options sheet) if you buy that price. Pretty soon you'll have a deal.

Like Timbo I have not heard of many good drive away prices on the '8 recently. Stock levels have been comparitively low (certainly compared to late last year when I got mine. I was able to get one straight off the boat by waiting 2 days more).

If you have a trade-in they might play a little with the change over price.

Choice of colour may also influence deal price.

My dealer remarked to me the other day (when in for 6month/10K service) how good a deal I had got back in November. He may have been honest as he knows there's no point trying to get me to buy a new car for a while.

Best thing to do is set a firm budget and haggle for as many extras as you want/need.

No floor mats are not standard but certainly not worth the official RRP. Personally I would add the Strakes and Rotary Motiffs to the list as well as the mats.

I got the Wing (fitted and painted), Windows tints, basic paint protection, extended warranty, and fitting of the Hymee Grill added in for my drive away price.

Happy shopping.

ps What colour are you looking at?

Got my 8 for 65k on road with extra warranty. Buy your extras after you get the car, that way you don’t pay 8% stamp duty on them.

Thx for all the helpful comments so far guys.

My first colour choice is black, second choice is black and third choice is silver . I am thinking of getting my 8 first then selling off my current car slowly. I didn't think it makes much of a difference if I traded it in because if they give me a lower price I am under the impression that they would give me a lower trade in value also.

Arid, when did you get yours? and from which dealership? I have personally never bought anything from mazda before, but I don't find them terribly enthusiastic or friendly. Is it that kind of car that is on the line-up purely for PR and mazda don't really care whether they sell many?

prices have dropped big this year

you wouldn't have to pay anywhere near those prices.

$61000 should be at most for a leather pack
and at around say $57000 for the pov pack

i did suggest going for leather pack trust me!, you would want all those extras
and dont borther listening to those dealers, they say rubbish. and they wouldn't know a thing about products they are selling!
make them nervous like you never been before, make them beg for ur sale!

shop around! you may find prices differ greatly depending on how tight these dealer bastards want for the car
:p

oh yeah and also, you should display some knowledge about the 8 to them, say stuff like you would be worried about flooding issues, warming up the car all the time, etc....

they should react differently never show the sign that u want the car really badly or all hope will be lost.... :p

Exactly! (searches for "implacable indifference" smiley). Poke face, carry a Subaru Liberty GT (or alternative) brochure with price clearly in view

Just to **** Timbo off, I'm going to repeat my purchase story!! :p :D

I shopped around a bit and told the local dealer I couldn't afford the 8 and was going to buy a Mini Cooper S instead. Told him I'd buy the 8 if it was 10K cheaper!!

Left it for a week or so and he rang me and said I've got a demo for you to look at. To cut a longish story short - got a L/P on road with strakes, alloy fuel cap and sill covers for 53K flat. They also threw in the next service for nix.

So if you're hooked on that new car smell - fork out by all means - but if you want to save some serious brass tell 'em you're going to buy something else and see if they offer you a better deal on a demo.

Ok,

I'm back from shopping and just got a black leather pack(62500)!! I don't think I got the best deal possible, but it ends up that one of the salesmen was a fan of my wife's restaurant and gave us an "ok" price right up front, and was a genuinely ok chap. Then the bastard of a manager came in and gave me the typical sales BS pitch (poking the calculator furiously, etc which I later asked wtf he was calculating which he didn't have an answer to......) and slapped on another $500 to the price......

Anyway the whole experience was quite pleasurable until the manager walked in....and my wife and I thought might as well give the nice saleman the sale rather than go elsewhere and get shitty treatment (which seems to be the norm for mazda from my limited experience).

Bad news is that my car is going to be a July build with scheduled August delivery....so its a bit of a wait. But its not a problem for me since I have already waited 9 months :/.

Thx for the help guys and I'll check back with some photos hopefully in a few weeks time.

An interesting thing i learnt at the dealership was there is currently a shortage of supply of RX-8s and this is due to a fire at one of the mazda plants. So apparently there hasn't been a great number of new ones hitting the streets in the past few months.

Congrats Kukubird. Glad to hear you're happy with the deal you got. Waiting till August will be harder than you think I bet! :D

Oh, and Timbo, forgot to add that they extended the warranty to three years from the time I picked it up!! :p :D :D

Sorry, cheap shot but I know you can take it!

Good one! kukubird ... there's been a lot of stories about the Hiroshima fire and supplies of 8's. I should also say those earlier prices were for 2004 builds, sold in 2005...so there's the difference (although I think I would have tended to put the manager back in his box when he increase the price by $500....in my experience, you never let the price go up )

As for you, Revolver...well, hands up all the Forum members who remember taking that Titanium 8 demo with the fuel cap and strakes for a jolly good thrashing.... :D :p

...and I'll always have had a good 15 months more driving pleasure than you LoL!

Ha! - didn't have the strakes and fuel cap as a demo - they were my addons. And besides, it loves a good thrashing. Never met a car that was more an S&M junkie!!! :D

Secondly, you're assuming you're gonna live longer than me!! :p :D :D

Well, the manager is coming to eat at our restaurant tonight . Guess what? the price of the chicken is suddenly going to be $2 more when he comes up to pay , despite being $15.90 on the menu. This is due to the fire in the kitchen that decimated the regular supply of chickens :/.

But seriously they were trying darn hard to get rid of the titanium they had on the floor......straight up 61k without bargaining yet. My main concern was the demo k's. It's a nice color but not my favourite choice.

Hey Kuku nice work. This wouldn't be Wood Bros would it? They had a grey there back in March when I got mine. $59k was the price I got back in March.

hi capncrunch,

It was Jason Mazda. Wood Bros was the only dealership i didn't visit due to a very bad service experience I had with them with my wife's (then GF) 121 about 10 years ago. Yes....it truly traumatised me.....so I never went back and I didn't want to put my 8 through anything like that.

59k is a superb price! how did u do it mate? Did it involve any grapple moves? lol

59k is about right for a demo, but you never know whats been happening with demos, as they get thrashed heaps, and for rotorys, you won't know if they been break in properly or been properly warmed up and for that, it may have caused improper expansion to the rotors, inwhich could do permanent damage
lucky u didn't choose the demo

It wasn't a demo it was brand-spanking. Actually after seeing some of the other prices people have quoted here (after I bought it, of course) I was actually a bit disappointed with that price but there you go. I paid full retail for my floor mats and tinting though if that makes you feel any better. The other options I got (like my illuminated gearshift **** they did pretty good prices on though so I shouldn't complain too loudly. Funnily enough that price was straight off the bat. Jason Mazda didn't bother to get back to me with a price and Parkland Mazda wouldn't negotiate from the list price. Regarding Wood Bros I know what you mean. From my experience buying this vehicle put it this way: price was the only reason I started to deal with them. After I got the car and it was all over, price is still the only reason I'd contemplate going back there.

Basically the way I do it is once you've decided on the car you want plus all the options just to ring up and tell them exactly what you want so they know you're ready to buy. Tell them you're getting three quotes and obviously you'll be going for the cheapest. Get them to fax you the price then shop it back and forward between the two cheapest. I tend to think that if you can buy a vehicle with a driveaway price which is the same or less than the list price before onroads then you're doing OK. For example, the list price is $60k - that should be what you aim for as the driveaway price (as a rough guide). At the end of the day though if you're financing it a grand or two makes no difference on your repayments so if you get good service and you're happy dealing with them it's worth paying extra IMHO.

capn,

definitely nice work! what colour did you get? next time i see one your colour i'm definitely flashing or waving at you .

Yeah Parkland were surprisingly unwilling to budge on the list price.....the manager at Melville was terribly dismissive and a bit rude tbh. He seemed to think I wasn't going to seriously buy one and kind of told me to bugger off until I was certain to make the commitment. So I said to myself...ok fine, there are 4 dealers, I'll just take my business elsewhere...but that kinda ruined the fun of the whole experience for me.

So if there are any dealers lurking here.....be nice!

Amazing how many of you have had bad experiences with salesmen not treating you seriously. There were similar comments from a few on the Sydney cruise.

I guess this is what happens when salesmen don't have to try hard to sell something. The 8 sells itself I suppose. Still, it is incredibly short-sighted.

As demonstrated by a number of posts, people have long memories. In an age where brand loyalty is the holy grail for marketers I find it amazing that some dealers still don't get it.

So what if you find yourself humouring the odd dreamer - at least you don't run the risk of pissing off the casually dressed, perhaps young but serious purchaser.

Of course, these comments don't apply to wonderful human beings like Nojooc and Daz. :D
