DIY Spark plug purchasing. 75% cheaper than Mazda

Mazda Australia would prefer to insult us all with a retail price of near $100 per spark plug.

Found this place in the USA that sells them at a less offensive price.

$US80 = complete set of 4-plugs (plus postage)

Do not buy from a STEALERSHIP. Get the identical plug from this company at sparkplugs.com

I am kind of getting sick of people constantly whinging about Mazda prices. So you found a better price - congratulations.

DrewMan 11-14-2007 11:23 PM

are the denso ones better than the NKG ones?

I believe the Denso plugs are hardier and less prone to the effects of detonation then the NGK ones , even though they are dearer they still represent excellent value compared to Mazdas local rip off price :spank:

Great post Dave .............DMRH...:)

Cheers

auzoom 11-15-2007 03:05 AM

Interesting thing is that manufacturers/dealers appear to have the stranglehold on Denso car plugs in Australia.

Dave, while I agree 100% with the point you make (and I reckon everyone here does as well), if you go on and on about the same thing, you just lose peoples interest. A simple "Stealership $500...XYZ link $80" would get more attention.

Cheers

Andrew

takahashi 11-15-2007 03:50 AM

I can sticky this if you make a nice title for it Dave.

There is also much cheaper to buy NGK iridium and NGK racing sourcing from Japan. I am going to do so in the next month or so to keep as a replacement set.

LittleJohn 11-15-2007 04:11 AM

I'm sorta with Dave on this one.... It might be a little repetitive, but I still appreciate getting links on cheap parts.
I'm pretty fed up with Mazda dealerships raping me. Now that my baby is ou of warranty, I doubt they will much more out of me.
Thanks for the link, I just purchased a set of Denso plugs due to that link. I didn't realise that Eurocars hit me with $450 when they changed my plugs last time. And they weren't even due to be changed cos I'd had the new plugs installed 10K earlier due to the hard start recall.

Black-8 11-15-2007 04:24 AM

PerformanceLub sells them for $140 for a pair of leading and trailing plugs, NGK Laser Iridium. Harold is the man to speak to. I've purchased other stuffs from him and very happy with the products.

I'm not sure though if a pair of leading & trailing plugs means 4 plugs in total, or just 2.

Link: http://www.performancelub.com/NGK%20pricelist.htm

Cromax 11-15-2007 06:20 AM

Wow, that's actually cheap.

Anyone been able to test out the laser iridiums and see how they wear?

Henley 11-15-2007 08:13 AM

Great find... always nice to hear ways to save money. :)

BTW how much did postage end up being?

Also Taka, are you going to just source your spark plugs from japanparts.com?

takahashi 11-15-2007 09:33 AM

Not sure.
I may want to source it directly from NGK rather than via Fujita.

auzoom 02-02-2008 06:21 AM

Anyone aware of a heat ranges comparison chart between NGK and Denso?

takahashi 02-02-2008 08:00 AM

Interesting. But many of us don't have your facility in Japanese or Chinese. Kannst Du mal uebersetzen?

enforcer 02-02-2008 02:45 PM

Taka, in a nutshell can we put some meaning to the chart...?

Brettus 02-02-2008 02:58 PM

you guys should also check out Mazsport for plugs
US$54 for a full set of aftermarket NGKs - I think I've seen them even cheaper than that elsewhere as well .

takahashi 02-02-2008 04:31 PM

Oh sorry.

Andrew asked me to post the chart of conversion numbers

HKS heat number 25 = Denso heat number 16 and NGK heat number 5 .... so on and on

auzoom 02-02-2008 05:23 PM

Thanks taka. And the reason I asked was I ordered the Denso ones and they are 27,31.

Brettus, the problem with Mazsport is (the last I looked) its a lot harder to order stuff from them than most other places. So unless they have updated their site, I doubt anyone is going to use them for everyday items like spark plugs.

not sure what you mean - click the box put in you credit card no. etc and job is done - what is hard about that ?

Black-8 02-02-2008 11:33 PM

hmm, I wonder if the NGK RE9B-T and RE7C-L refers to the heat number, if yes, then it's lower than denso? is that better or worse or ?

lol thats not hard at all, in fact I would love to be able to get to the point where I have selected a product and can enter a CC number, but go to http://www.mazsport.com and click products....Nothing to buy, nor any services, etc, etc.

Cheers

Andrew

Brettus 02-03-2008 01:14 AM

ahhhhhh -I see zee problem now - wrong Mazsport

http://mazsport.net/store/

takahashi 02-03-2008 07:37 PM

2 mazsports?????

auzoom 02-04-2008 02:44 AM

lol you know I didnt even notice the "Seven Hills, Australia" ! doh!

Ohh well I know now ;)

auzoom 07-13-2008 06:11 AM

OK confused. The Spark Plugs site shows the Denso plugs should have a gap of 0.035" AND 0.044". I have checked mine and they are at 0.035", is there any benefit from going to 0.044" (considering the OEM plugs are gapped to 0.048")?

Cheers

Andrew

matt13b 07-14-2008 01:57 AM

I was just thinking of getting a spare set of those Denso plugs as spares so will be interesting to know the difference??

Revolver 07-19-2008 04:50 PM

I've been thinking of getting some spare plugs too Matt, so I'll go in with you when you're ordering if that's ok. Happy to buy whatever your research suggests is the go...

Andy Wana 07-19-2008 06:19 PM

Count me in if anyone's buying plugs. We can save money on shipping.

Henley 07-19-2008 07:01 PM

I'm looking at buying some spark plugs too... how about the K&N air filter and oil filter... are they good prices too?

Have you had any luck finding out about the difference in the gaps on the Denso plugs Andrew? Just doing some research now to get new spark plugs..
Happy to buy as many sets as we all need and attempt a group buy too.

enforcer 07-20-2008 02:49 AM

If you can secure them for under a $100 count me in...

Andy Wana 07-20-2008 07:10 AM

Are most of you interested in the NGK (OEM) or Denso plugs?
I can help arrange a group buy and we all can benefit from the cheaper shipping costs. Min. 5 people required

Put your name down here if interested.

Sorry,remove me from the buy.

Andy Wana 07-21-2008 01:47 AM

As of 21/07/2008, the cost of the plugs are as follow (in USD):

Denso Iridium Racing 5754 IRL01-27 .035" Leading $35.30 each
Denso Iridium Racing 5752 IRT01-31 .035" Trailing $35.30 each

NGK Racing plug 6700 RE7CL .048" Leading (OEM) $19.95 each
NGK Racing plug 6701 RE9BT .048" Trailing (OEM) $19.95 each

Delivery for 5 sets (20 plugs):
UPS Worldwide Expedited $67.37 (will divide by amount of people in group buy)

I imagine local postage shouldn't cost more than $5, but I'll get the precise amount anyway.

Drop dead deadline is Thursday. Not open for discussion.
No more orders after that so that we can get things moving along.
I'll PM each of you my contact details and bank details as well so that we can pay for the plugs in one go.
Drewman and Tuan have met me and I am sure they can vouch for my honesty in matters like this.

Once all the payment have been received, the order will be made.
So please do not delay payment for others sake.
I will keep you all up to date with date of dispatch and tracking no. if supplied.

Once the order had been received, I'll individually pack the plugs securely and send it via Australia Post. I'll absorb some of the shipping cost for fairness sake since the plugs will be shipped to my workplace.

Would you mind adding the following information in as well so that I can calculate the shipping cost to get these plugs to your door?

Type of spark (Denso/NGK) :: Total no of plugs :: Name :: Suburb :: Postcode

1. NGK - 2 Lead, 2 Trail - Andy Wana - Newington, NSW 2127
2. Drewman
3. Matt13b

*** Guys definately count me in, but I need some more advice as there are mixed reactions on DENZO vs NGK. I see Taka posted a heat range chart but I can't make heads or tails out of it.

Do the Denzo plugs provide any better performance than the NGKs...?

Andy Wana 07-22-2008 05:49 AM

Enforcer, I'd stick to OE NGK plugs unless you have had engine work and ECU done to your RX8.
I use one of them Iridium plugs before in my MX5, makes jack all difference to the factory plugs in a stock bog engine.

auzoom 07-22-2008 05:57 PM

The only real difference is the denso plugs are colder. For street use there ios no need to be paying $15usd extra per plug.

MattRX 07-22-2008 07:49 PM

Hi Andy

NOt sure if it helps but these pop up often http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mazda...spagenameZWDVW

Hmm, not bad for AUS$87 landed, BUT its been a while (over a year) since he's sold anything and with feedback like this....

Sent empty package Paypal's claim in my favor but he hasn't given money back prodeback ( 2 ) May-09-06 16:08
Reply by elrob20 (Dec-22-07 14:30): No need to lie. First you said it was ripped open. Now I sent it empty?

I'd also be worried in getting an empty box as well....:suspect:

Henley 07-23-2008 06:01 PM

I wouldnt mind a set too but will it increase the overall shipping cost from sparkplugs.com by much for 7sets in stead of the 5 sets originally quoted for?

Andy Wana 07-23-2008 06:47 PM

Unfortunately, shipping cost does increase with numbers ...
But it'll work out cheaper if we have more people on board

6 sets - USD 74.22 (each person will pay 12.37 shipping)
7 sets - USD 74.72 (each person will pay 10.68 shipping)
10 sets - USD 88.16 (each person will pay 8.816 shipping)

The ebay one sounded good, but reading how the plugs will either come in a plain box or a bag raised some suspicion for me.
