Discussion: Brisbane Dyno Day

I have arranged with Mark from PowerTorque to hold a dyno day for anyone interested.

He can do one in the new year, or we could wait till March and they would have moved into a new premesis (next door, bigger)

Cost will be $25 per car. PowerTorque will supply a sausage sizzle and refreshments. Everyone will get a dyno print-out. We might even be able to have a couple of prizes - any sponsors out there?

Not restricted to RX-8s but it would be good to have a Rotary theme. If you have a mate and they want to see what their care makes then that is fine.

Register your interest here, and any preference for dates as well.

I'll make a decision on a date during the Chistmas/New Year week.

Cheers,
Hymee.

I might see if Mazda will sponsor the event to prove the cars really do make the power they are supposed to. As if. Hahaha

Count me in , i for one would definetely like to know what s the real output of the rx8 and not the B/S that Mazda has told everyone.

The real output of my RX-8 on that particular chassis dyno, on that particular day was ~120 rwkW. If you want to really test the engine itself, then we could always take your motor out and test it on Mark's Engine dyno.

It would be great to see what variation there is between the cars, in the same conditions (atmo) and same equipment.

Mark will be happy to let everyone look around the workshop, even check out the engine dyno facilities. It would be nice if there was a motor set up on there as well I have seen a 20B tripple hair-drier running on it.

BTW - I for one don't believe that the ECU holds it back on the dyno. One way to tell for sure would be to use a package such as EFILive to look at the timing/fueling, and compare a run on the dyno against a run on the road.

Cheers,
Mark.

The biggest "BS" I would like to compare is the line they told us that the Renisis puts out as much as the previous Turbo RX-7. RPM-PWR will (hopefully) bring his "177kW" machine along and we can see for ourselves.

Cheers,
Hymee.

It's going to take a lot of dedidaction for me to keep the car standard between now and then

So I gather from your other posts that PT are a bit woried about the ramp speeds? Some of the rx-7 guys I know have had to dyno in as low as 2nd gear at some of these places and that really hurts power. Turbo rotaries thrive on load. I'll still beat you though

It is not an issue of ramp "speed", the ramp rate can be set at whatever he likes (i.e. 15km/hr/sec or whatever). I think it is more of concern about top speed of the wheels, therefore a safety issue. And the Dyno puts the load on, so that is not a problem. It is not an inertial dyno (big block of concrete being spun up) like the ones common in the states. It is electro-mechanical. Exactly the same as the unit on the engine dyno, but mounted under the floor, hooked up to rollers.

So it shouldn't make too much difference being in a lower gear. There will be more torque, but lower revs, and the relationship between HP, Torque and RPM will equal that out. The only difference between "top" gear and a lower gear is there might be slightly more frictional losses in the lower gear as the power is not going through 1:1, and therefor reduction gears. Although I suspect the difference is negligable, as all the gears in the 'box are always engaged anyway at all times. But I don't want to turn this into a gearbox lesson .

And also, Pete, if you want to get a run done before you do you mods (what ya got planned ??), you could always get a run done at PT before the 19th when they close for Christmas. I could organise if you like, maybe get the family discount

Cheers,
Hymee.

Thanks hymee, but since one of the main reasons for doing this dyno day is to compare the cars, I'm happy to wait.

re- the dyno - yeah I said ramp speed not ramp acceleration Your probably right about the load thing, but I do know from previous experience that in the real world I was overpowering the wastegate on my last FD and nearly blowing the motor. Something we could never re-create on a braked dyno.
