A crazy rattle

My latest 8 (I love saying that!) seems to have developed a really annoying rattle.

It seems to be coming from the rear parcel shelf (there must be a better name for this part of a sports car) and sounds quite tinny.

I've had several attempts to narrow down the problem but cant seem to locate it.

Any ideas ..

oh, and whilst you are reading this .... please take a moment to review this thread ...

Pricer01, I was playing around in the back of the car today and have a few ideas.

Check to see if the retaining nut for the spare wheel is tight. The wheel or the large washer could rattle if not tight.

Above the spare is the amp for the speakers, check that is bolted in properly, same goes for the speakers. The jack and jack handle are worth a check, ummm, what else, check the bolts for the spare wheel mounting bracket (rear strut brace ) are tight.

On the inside, check the metal grilles over the speakers. Are they pressed in properly?

Good Luck!

the rear windows usually need some adjustment as they seem to get loose as time goes on and rattle as well

Mine was the spare tire. I had a blanket in the trunk so I stuffed it under the tire for a test and rattle was immediately gone and has not returned.

DIY Rattle

Not too sure if this helps, but I have a way to create the rattle. After the the rear window was removed and replaced on my 8, I've got a phat rattle coming from the rear deck below the rear window.

I'd love to help, but all I can suggest is that you remove the pass through and sit in the back seat while someone else drives. You may be able to better isolate the source of the noise that way. I hate rattles, I sympathise with you, brother!

BTW, you need to update your sig.......

Gomez.

Also check the front passenger seat belt. I've noticed a rattle that is hard to pinpoint other than it might be from behind or behind to the left and it turned out to be the seatbelt clip rattling between the door and the passenger seat. This is assuming the rattle cannot be heard with a passenger in that seat belted up.

Mystery Solved - Thanks be !!

I know dozens of you have been sleepless trying to resolve the problem of my rattle. In the months since I repored this the car has been to a few dealers, had the contents of the boot removed, foam jammed everywhere and dozens of other attempts.
Finally, the service guys at McGrath at Kirrawee isolated it to be the actual rear windscreen.

The needed approval from Mazda Aust to order a new rear window and have an 'expert' remove the rear window. The plan was to remove and reseat then reseal the original screen however, they had teh replacement screen handy as there was a view that there was a better than even chance that the old screen would crack on removal.

Well they were right, the old screen broke, they fitted the new screen, arranged for new tint.

I picked the car up and couldnt believe it ..... silence ... well - not really, but RATTLE FREE!

Apparently its happened 3 times in Australia (I was the 3rd) something to do with a plastic locating clip.

I'm a much happier chap ....

And although I've been busy for months and not here often - I STILL LOVE MY 8!

But WHO will play Gomez?

The unseen guy from Charlies Angel's?

Tim 'the toolman' Taylor's unseen neighbour?

Or Gomez himself?
