Post Cold Air Intake Vs Short Ram

Hey all, just picked up a 04 RX8 last week and was thinking about doing a Intake upgrade. However im finding it hard to figure out a. Which Brand and B. What type of intake to go for.

What kind of gains can i expect with the upgrade and in the end is it really worth it? Your help is appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Firstly, the engineers at Mazda did a superb job with the intake and theres not much to be had with intakes. You sacrifice a bit of mid range torque and power for top end with a few of the aftermarket intakes on the market. The one that delivers the most results has probably been the Racing Beat REVI intake.

Also with other intakes, its mainly just a lot of noise, euphoria and your brain telling you its faster

I myself am running the stock airbox with the baffles removed and using a mazdaspeed panel filter. Ive removed the stock VFAD and replaced it with an Odula Ram intake pipe.

Any intake which provides direct access to cold air is your best bet. The stock intake is well designed and would work fine with just a drop in.

Either the AEM or REVi would work fine as well. Anything short ram will only draw in hot air robbing you of any performance gains you might otherwise get.

Just thought i'd throw this one in there. Has anyone tried the K&N Typhoon system? Looks pretty easy to install and gives a 10HP boost at high end, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's used or is using one.

As a former owner of the K&N v2 i can honestly say don't buy it.

The ONLY way this intake is effective is to keep all your engine bay panels in place...engine cover, fuse, battery, and PCM covers. Any modifications to these opens up vast areas for hot air to enter the intake.

I drove with this intake for 40,000 miles and saw intake air temps as high as 192 degrees here in phoenix.

Since switching to the AEM CAI I rarely see anything above a few degrees ambient.

Thanks guys, i think you have all answered my question, im just going to leave it stock, not worth the time for the minimal gains achieved.

typhoon is caca

Sounds ricey and will not even give you close to 10hp increase. Probably not even 1HP. If you really want one go with a true cold air intake.

From everything I've read and heard over the past 4 years or so, it seems to be a feel good mod rather than achieving anything dramatic in functional terms. I think Drew hit the nail on the head with his first post. I've left mine stock.

If playing around with this sort of stuff is what you enjoy, go for it. Just don't expect any appreciable performance return. Butt dyno's don't count!
