Clutch gone

it appears my clutch has given up - strange noises (and smell) but luckily just down the road from the dealer - 5.00pm on a Friday! - just had time for a quick check. He was pretty sure it was the pressure plate.

3 1/2 years and 87.000kms - no track, virtually no city, very gentle existance - anyone find this a bit strange?

Any chance Mazda are going to be the slightest bit interested in a car just out of warranty - would the warranty have covered this anyway?

bugger.

I'm not accusing you of anything, but you could have been riding the clutch?

Somehow I've got a feeling mazda will charge you in full for this work.

I believe the clutch is a wear and tear item so unless you have pretty good proof of manufacturer related failure I would say your out of luck.

87000km isn't reasonable service on a clutch assembly though guys... Mazda should be replacing it under warranty! Actually, no, he's out of warranty!!!

you do expect a clutch to last longer than this. while the clutch isn't usually covered by the same warranty as the rest of the car, I would be asking Mazda to cover the parts or give you them at cost.

I don't think I will be buying another Mazda anytime soon. at 3300km my transmission sounds like a bucket of bolts and it gets treated like a baby. I'm seriously considering selling the 8 and getting an evo. more performance and 5 years of warranty!

Wear and tear and mine is badly worn just 14 or so track days!

Good luck claiming warranty from Mitsubishi. You will find yourself in the same ****.

You are out of warranty the moment you are on the pit lane. Go and get a Porsche Jarl! :D

Jedi is invading Australia!!

If AU is similar to US, then Mazda will declare it a wear and tear item and you'll need to pay for it. I was quoted $750 USD to replace mine at the dealership and I know I can do it for much cheaper by buying the clutch online.

Good luck with the clutch, sorry to hear it didn't last very long.

God, I hope mine lasts longer than 87000km!! I got over 200,000km on my last car on the first clutch, mum got 180,000km out of her clutch in her accord ... it's something I'd expect from track days but not from daily driving!

Taka ... everytime you take your car to a track day I reckon you've basically added 10000km to it ... your car's probably going to get pretty long in the tooth in the next couple of years.

Not really riding, I find it quite a crisp clutch setup, I just don't like the noise it makes when I disengage it going into my driveway and it felt like it was slipping until last service!

Other RX8s that I've driven feel different ... I'm kinda not impressed with Mazda's inconsistency in relation to the whole product, but that's a story for another day

Ditto cromax. The way my previous clutch felt compared to other 8's, mushy and alot of free play.

Rick Shaw put in an uprated pressure plate with new clutch disc and the thing is superb when the cars running @ optimum temperature. Only negative is that its a bitch in traffic, not as bad as twin plate etc etc.

Does anyone know what the costs of new stock gearbox + install by mazda would be?

that includes about $450 USD for installation. Oh, and mine was under warranty. (long story) Not sure if your prices are similar.
Hmm... maybe I should stop venturing into your forum if prices are totally different.

The Evo 10 soon on the market does look and sound interesting , but if you do decide to keep the 8 get yourself a aftermarket gearbox and not the ordinary Mazda Taiwanese /Chinese box they are currently running .

As one of the key people in Mazda said because Mazda is a poor child of non wealthy parents and has not got a lot of royal lineage it has to excell in its design to get noticed , but its a pity the parts they use to put the RX8 together are of sub standard ,and are wearing out early guess you cant get everything for $60,000

Thanks
Ben

I am weighing up the options and was seriously considering FI to get the rx-8 to where I want it. realistically this will cost about $10K for the kit + cooling mods. then my gear box is questionable so I figure I should set aside $5K to repair or replace it. to top it off there isn't a aftermarket box that will slot straight in. do I hope for a PPG gear set to hit the market?

for slightly more than FI I will get performance, at least 3 years warranty, and a more practical car (for me anyway). look and feel I would probably concede to the rx-8

Mazda is screwing themselves with the poor quality Rx-8. the pinnacle of there line-up is made of crap parts. all my family has Mazda's but my 8 is the only one that sounds like a bucket of bolts.
I don't care what the problems are

you can expect more than from a $60K than a ****, substandard gearbox. basically Mazda has forced me to only look at other manufactures to get the performance and reliability I want.

One would think that Mazda after spending the time and effort to try and recapture the rotary market would go out of its way to retain them but like yourself there are many previous dissapointed / letdown owners considering other brands .

I am also considering a change i doubt that Mazda will improve the way they operate even if they do bring out another rotary in 2010

I had an S2000 once and had to replace the clutch every 40000kms - back then i was doing that many kms every year and at $2000 a pop - yes it was a wear n tear cost - and thanks for coming. 87000kms is pretty good i think, especially given how hard i tend to drive this car

it's all to easy to get grumpy with faults in new cars. most of the time problems aren't a big deal but they still leave you feeling let-down.

Lucky that you did not do you diff to your S2000. I have heard one every 2nd car on the race track, either going to have or have had a diff overhaul or changed due to mechanical wear.

Get real people, you are driving a sports car.
