I agree guys this should not happen :(

Just never experienced the problem after stalling my car a few times and while being cold and while not driving the car for a week.

Very interesting.. Im using Rotary Oil that i bought from Mazda and BP/Shell/CALTEX premium petrol only. This is the only obvious thing that is different between our cars and im on still the F Flash.

Somethings just make you go hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Regards
Phillip

I sent the following email to MA yesterday:

Thank you for your reply. I attempted the dechoking procedure as suggested by the manual with no results. My car failed to start on a Saturday afternoon when all local dealerships had closed. The car could not be started and a tow could only be arranged on a Monday when a Mazda service centre was open henceforth the car was incapacitated from use for the rest of Saturday. This is far from reasonable. A car costing $66,000 with just over 3000km on the odometer. If this was the only car that I had then I would have been without any means of transportation for the rest of the weekend. As flooding of the RX8 is a known issue I suggest that the Mazda Assist program be reviewed to avoid such a situation arising

I got the following reply:

We appreciate your feedback and this has been forwarded to our National Customer Relations Manager for her review

I hope this isn't a shutup kid and run along response

takahashi 05-27-2004 08:01 PM

Well done AMG... appreciate of your effort.

Let's see what the MA PR dude will say.

This forum is invasive, subliminal, and a conduit for contagion!

On tuesday morning my wife stalled our cold 8 and it took until Thursday to get it started again, allowing plenty of time between events for fuel evaporation. Started by trying the owner's handbook method a few times, to no avail, then disconnected the secondary air injection pump, no go, then removed the fuel pump fuse. Still nothing bar a tired battery, and thoughts of trailering the car 90 km to the nearest dealer.

Finally the good old tow around the paddock did the trick.
I'm sure none of this would have happened had I not contracted the dreaded flooding virus from this forum.

regards,jack.

Hymee 05-28-2004 02:44 AM

Bugger. Hymee Cat-back didn't help. Hehehehe.

timbo 05-28-2004 02:44 AM

I guess that makes 4. Jack, have you had your ECU reflashed to the "G" calibration?

Tim

AMG 05-28-2004 02:47 AM

and RX8club is only a small sample of RX8 owners. So if there are 4 members with this problem (three this past week), how many others has this happened to.

Hymee what about a hymee deflooding valve?

Choppy, people should not have to do research on rotaries before buying them. The limit of their knowledge should at least extend to the cars fuel economy and it's redline....these are (from a users standpoint) the main differences between a rotary and a piston engine.

AMG has obviously had more experience driving rotaries than you or I with our floodless rotary history.....Ipso facto, if anyone were to flood, it should have been you or I.....

Other factors are obviously at play here.

I've done nearly 6000k's and my car gets used daily. I have redlined it twice....once, to see what it was like, and once so that my brother could experience it!. Mostly it'll struggle to get over 6000rpm on any particular drive. I don't see a correlation between low rev driving and flooding.

No-one has done an extensive survey, but here are a few of my observations....

Flooding has occurred on cars with a good spread of mileages.
The Yank's have (had?) it far worse than us.
Experienced rotary drivers also suffer from it.
The "M" flash in the States has largely solved the issue.
AMG and rotary4me had not driven their cars for several days prior to their flooding.
E, F, and G Flashes have flooded...(donaldc, rotary4me, AMG).

Can we draw any conclusions? Yes.

The "M" flash changed the duty cycle/pulse width of the injectors during start....less fuel equals less flooding.
Cars that are shut down before reaching operating temperature can be prone to flood on the restart. This is what happened to AMG, even though his early shut down was accidental.
IMO, battery condition may play a part. A battery with a lower than usual charge will not crank as fast nor supply full voltage to the ignition.....and AMG's car spends most of it's time in the garage.....

Hell, I've run out of time.....gotta see a man about a dog

Gomez.

Edit. Reposted in this thread.....

Hymee 05-28-2004 03:15 AM

I am so keen to try and make this happen to my car just to see how difficult it is.

rotary4me 05-28-2004 04:03 AM

Well got my car back a few hours ago.
Report said "checked and found to be flooded , recharged battery and cleaned spark plugs , reprogrammed powertrain control module".
By the time i had got their all the techs had gone home for the weekend so i'm not sure what the "reprogrammed powertrain control module" is. Maybe its the flash upgrade to G ??
I asked the service girl the question but she had no idea what i was talking about but she did pull out a service bulletin so i guess it was something that was recommended by Mazda.
Any ideas ???

Gomez 05-28-2004 04:37 AM

Yes, "G" for you brother.......

rotary4me 05-28-2004 05:05 AM

Well i hope G stands for Good.

So what is the procedure to reproduce a flooding?

My car had been parked for about 22 hours, untill I started it this afternoon.

I did not let it warm up, and as I was backing it out of the garage, I purposefully stalled it. Twice. No all that easy to do when it is fast-idling at about 2300 RPM. I used no throttle. Infact, my right foot was on the brake. Both times it started OK.

After the 2nd start the revs dropped momentarily whilst it was in fast-idle mode.

300m up the road, I stopped the engine. It started OK.

5 mins later, on the way to SuperCheap, I purposefully stalled it at the lights. Bit easier to do then as the idle was back to normal ~800RPM. Started OK.

I tried hard :) Can someone give me the procedure please?

Cheers,
Hymee.

AMG 05-29-2004 03:52 AM

seems the povo pack doesn't get the flooding option:p

I can just imagine someone in another car witnessing your stall and turning to a fellow passenger and going "look at that guy, can't even drive his expensive car...obviously doesn't deserve it".

Especially when the rear wheels chirped in reverse on the garage floor!

Yeah - I was conscious of that. But the selfless acts I am prepared to do above and beyond the call, in the interests of the common good...

Cheers,
Hymee.

Hehehe.

Yeah - I think it must be an addition to the snob pack just to disgrace the pompous leather brigade when they stall it! :p

Re: Any Flooding issues in Aus/NZ

Not a problem with NZ/AUS 8's.

To the best of my knowledge.

- Any other issues with the Aus/NZ version of this car?
- What is the latest PCM version for Aus/NZ?
- Can I use 91 fuel instead of 96?

Maestro, I don't know where you were going with your post.....this thread has documented four cases of flooding here in Australia.

Let's agree that it is a problem, but not a significant one.:)

Gomez.

Hymee 05-29-2004 10:40 PM

Meastro has been closely following this and other related threads :)

Hymee = RX8 MARTYDOM

Your selfless acts in trying unsuccesfully to flood your RX8 should earn you the title of the RX8 non flooding....... MARTYR .HA HA HA

cheers

The flooding problem is insignificant when it occurs to someone elses RX8 however its very significant when it effects our own rx8.

I washed my car this afternoon. It hadn't been started in over 24 hours (Yesterdays short trip to SC).

Started it, immediately backed it out 2 car lengths. Turned off. Left it while I washed car. Started first go.

Bugger.

Cheers,
Hymee.

BVD 05-30-2004 04:24 AM

Geez, you guys .... how can you stall a car backing out of a garage.... :D

No - don't yell at me - just kidding. I just bloody well did it myself and am right now awaiting the dreaded tow truck... grrrrrr

I hadn't used the car for a week, but it started OK. Backing it out and it just cut out. Did I stall it or did it just die??? Not sure, but the b*gger wouldn't restart, despite doing all the recommended stuff.

Dead as mutton. Left it for a couple of hours, jumpered it to my wife's car and cranked away again, but totally cactus.

Sunday of course. (Things only break down when the repairers are shut. For instance fridges and washing machines only EVER break down on Saturday evening in my experience..)

Had a very pleasant and reassuring chat with another old guy on the Mazda assist line. He was in Brisbane, and we had a good chat about our days travelling in outback QLD. Made me quite forget to insult Mazda... :p

Ah well, they can do the recall replacement thing and also flash it while they have it...

AMG 05-30-2004 04:26 AM

Now that's 5 cars in little over a week. BVD, did you warm the car before it stalled or did you start backing it out as soon as you started it (that's what i did).

Real bummer isn't it.
