Any Flooding issues in Aus/NZ

I have just ordered a Black '8 which arrives in a week. Reading through the US areas of this site, I see that people have issues with the '8 flooding when turned off cold - resulting in a tow back to the dealer!
Qs:
- Has anyone in Aus/NZ had this problem?
- Any other issues with the Aus/NZ version of this car?
- What is the latest PCM version for Aus/NZ?
- Can I use 91 fuel instead of 96?
- Anything else I should get the dealer to check/fix before giving me the car!

Thanks

I don't think any of us has been really affected by such problem. Some may have had difficulty starting after shifting the car when it was cold, but the traditional WOT start procedure worked, IIRC.

As far as we know, the current PCM Calibration available via the WDS system is known in our circles as the "G" Flash. We have not had any reports on new cars with that flash yet, not any subsequent ones. The definitive thread on this, as far as Australian cars are concerned can be found here: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...threadid=21879 Ignore any references or links to US calibrations.

Our cars have a sticker inside the fuel tank saying "USE ONLY PULP (95RON) or better", or words to that effect. It will run on ULP (91 RON), but you are taking certain risks into your own hands.

Cheers,
Hymee.

well it just happened to me one hour ago. Taking the car out of the shed I stalled it. Now I am unable to start it up again. Seems I'll have to tow it to Mazda to get it rectified. I had it reflashed to the "G" flash two weeks ago. The service techo told me it will rectify flooding issues some people have been having. Well they didn't get that part right.

Not to happy to have a $66K car limp in the driveway becasue of a flooding issue.

AMG,

You could try following as much of the procedure here as you can:
http://www.finishlineperformance.com...1-04-1273d.pdf

Best of luck if you try

Tried the decjoking procedure ( also described in the manual). No luck!

Called Mazda Assist, they said if three dechoking procedures did not work then the car has to go in to Mazda otherwise continual attempts at dechoking could result in fouling of plugs (@$100 per plug).

So basically the car is unusabe for two days till Monday when it can be taken to a mazda dealership. So much for 24hr/7day service.

For the first time I can say I am very dissapointed with the car

AMG

Sorry to hear about your flooding .

How did you stall it reversing out of your garage especially when you first start the car it revs aroung 1800 rpm easy to reverse .

Glad i am not your 1st patient on monday morning .he hehe

Man a weekend without your car sucks big time just as well it happened at home .

cheers
michael

yes, reversing out of driveway, car doors were next to driveway pillars when it stalled so I could't get out. Had to call my partener to come back home to give me a push so I could at least open the drivers door.

Bloody p%$$#d off, not good enough for a $66K car!

It's likely that we will hear of this more and more in cars as they bring the cats up to operational temperature quickly. A lot of fuel in a cold engine that stops before it is warm can't be good, irrespective of design.

AMG 05-22-2004 02:40 AM

Thanks sco, what happened to your prev post.....off into the netherworld.

Spark plug location is too tight so I'll jst leave it for mazda.

Without hesitation I'll be on the phone with Mazda Australia monday morning about this. I am not happy.

Gomez 05-22-2004 02:42 AM

OK, its official, the jury is now out on the "G" flash. donaldc had this happen to him ages back, the Mazda dude pulled the fuel pump fuse and turned the engine over to expel the unburnt fuel....give that a burl AMG.

Gomez.

I changed my mind when I re-read that procedure recommends fitting new spark plugs... sorry.

You could just give it an hour or two and try again. Hopefully by then the residual fuel may have evaporated some more. But if you try starting it again, fully depress the accelerator because IIRC this tells the car to cut the fuel. (Confusing eh?)

AMG 05-22-2004 02:45 AM

Gomez, are you saying the "G" flash is crap? Never had problems before the "G" flash

sco 05-22-2004 02:46 AM

Or pull the fuel pump fuse (as Gomez said)... then you'll be guaranteed no more fuel.

Gomez 05-22-2004 02:49 AM

Oh , another idea I haven't tried on the 8...the Falcon was prone to valve rattle due to a leaky lifter if it hadn't been started for a week....I overcame the problem by holding the throttle flat while cranking, the ECU would not allow the engine to start at WOT and I could build oil pressure before starting. The ign and fuel were cut. This only worked on the 8cyl Fords, the 6cyl would rev into orbit if you tried this.

No, it's just been a long time since anyone in Australia has reported a flooded engine. It may have something to do with the new flash, it may not....as we don't know why the flash was released and we don't know what it was designed to overcome it is difficult to rule out the flash as the culprit here. I assume you have never flooded the car before.....

Hymee 05-22-2004 02:59 AM

AMG - Sorry to hear that! Any MIL?

So cranking the engine at WOT wont help??

I wonder if we will get more of this as our cars get their first taste of cold weather?

Cheers,
Hymee.

AMG 05-22-2004 03:04 AM

Hymee, what's MIL?

WOT does nothing.

Gomez, I've never flooded the car before. And though rotaries are prone to flooding, I've never even flooded the RX7 either. When I picked up my car I asked what the G flash addressed, amongst various points mentioned one was it was desighed to address the flooding issue. Well Mazda, back to the drawing books!

Of course Oz RX-8 can flood. We are just too educated about it so it never happens.

I have a problem with my car. The seat keep bloody creaking!!!

Taka

takahashi 05-22-2004 07:10 AM

I guess AMG has all the prevention he knows as this is not his first rotary...

Hmm.... start to evaluate the :G: flash

AMG 05-22-2004 07:10 AM

then taka tell the wife to leave those activities to the bedroom, the creaking should stop then (in the car at least)

LOL!

takahashi 05-22-2004 07:26 AM

shhhh.... you never know what pregnancy can do to someone's breast

just kidding... I need to sort that out it is driving me nuts!

donaldc 05-22-2004 08:58 AM

If the car is really flooded, it takes a lot of cranking after the fuel pump fuse is removed. the mazda service guy had a spare battery attached to my car whilst he was cranking it over. you'll need someone to help you as the fuse needs to be reinserted once the engines starts firing.

fortunately it has never happened to me again.

Donald

Hymee 05-22-2004 09:05 AM

Just to throw the cat amongst the pidgeons here - do you know for sure if it is actually flooded? http://www.hymee.com/smilies/sm_hiding.gif
