[VIC] Great Ocean Road Cruise. Sat 26 Aug 2006.

Hi All
I just couldn't wait and drove down the GOR a couple of weekends ago.
It’s still a great bit of road, but they have stuffed it. The entire GOR is now sign posted at 80km/h. I was taking it easy and spent more time backing off than anything else.
Anyway leaving Melbourne it was raining all day and no one would use the pull over stops to let me past, so I had to muscle a couple of cars out of the way but still managed to have a little bit of fun.
The return trip was fantastic as word must have gotten out. Everyone jumped off the road as soon as they saw me. Apart from some road works I had an almost uninterrupted run from Apollo Bay to Torquay in brilliant sunshine. The new speed limit was a serious PITA in the more open sections, but the tighter corners did keep me under control.
I put a splash ($20) of fuel in at Apollo Bay to get me home. The Mobil servo has a premium fuel pump. I don't know what fuel comes out of it but the RX8 just didn't like didn't like it, so I stopped at Aireys Inlet to fill up and she has been much happier ever since.
The only thing you have to be careful of on this bit of road is to keep under enough control that you can avoid oncoming traffic when they have pushed to hard and now require more road than they should. Last time I drove up there in my Commodore I almost had a BMW K100 hood ornament.
Another possible end point for the cruise would be the Cape Otway light house. I have not been there for a couple of years, but there was a cafe (I have not tried it), lots of grassed area and not a bad view. That is assuming the weather is ok otherwise it is a bloody cold, wet and windy spot.

Nice tips
Shame that GOR is 80. Still fun.
The fun is on the back road (hint).
I think the tree top walk has lunch cafe and walk - think it is better than just a look out. We can go there as well I guess.

Hey Taka,
Just blundered on to this now. Been sayin to the wife that we need to do a GOR trip for the last couple of weeks!! At this stage you can count us in. We live on the Bellarine Peninsula out of Geelong, so will tag on as you pass thru town. Please let me know your route thru Geelong and we'll work something out. The Otway Fly is well worth a look - been there twice.
Cheers,
Rod.

Thanks Rod,
PM me with your email and other details and I can show you my route next weekend. Most likely Geelong or Torquay as the meeting point.

If there are not many 8 turn up that day, I think it is appropriate to have a breakfast somewhere and take photos of Kal and Eric's car - turn out to be a photoshot day. There are a lot of look at on those cars
