Questions and Answers

Hello everyone.

We are very pleased with the interest and response from everyone towards the Interceptor-X, it makes all the long hours of R&D seem appreciated. Scott just finished a long day of trying to answer as many questions as humanly possible while running a performance business full of rotary powered vehicles. If your question has not been answered or is not listed below, do not despair, we will continue on tomorrow here and on our site. Thanks for your patience.

Christy Glassburn
Mazsport, Inc

Q: Did you guys have any issue of long term fuel trim pulled out by the factory ecu or do you take full control???? Mind my lack of knowledge on your product. I may keep my turbo kit if this really works.

A: We take full control and eliminate the problem.

Q: another question, how long have you had the greddy kit working with the Interceptor-X EMS to show longevity? Thanks

A: About 3000 miles of mostly around town use. We have focused on the drivability of the car, I have spent many hours driving at slow and medium speed in real world conditions. This meant hours not really miles. The system comes with a one year defect warranty

Q: It is a full masking piggyback. It pulls injector and timing control for itself.

A: That is correct and allows the Factory ECU to assume it has complete control.

Q: Have u guys done a ecu tuning on a stock rx8? With just bolt ons? No turbo. I would like to know how well it could be fine-tuned. And how the numbers come out to be. I would be very interested in purchasing one then. Since I would like to go N/A and just fine tune it

A: No results yet but soon.

Q: Does it control idle RPM and leading / trailing split?

A: The factory ECU still sets the target idle speed but you have timing and mixture control Yes it does have leading/trailing split. You setup your leading ignition maps based on engine RPM, when boost is introduced you retard the timing as the psi is increased. Then you determine how many deg. after the leading the trailing should fire. It is adjustable based on engine RPM

Q: The prophecy has been fulfilled! We're coming up on two freaking' years the car has been out, it's about time. Nice work! Watch the video, 10~12 psi on the greddy kit! Can't wait to see what it does on a bigger turbo. Any testing done on a N/A or ported car?

A: The N/A units are underway and might be ready for the first run. No nothing on a ported Renesis yet, we do have years of porting and tuning all the other engines, 12a’s to 20b’s with good power and reliability.

Q: Does this mean DSC still works with this installed?

A: Yes
Q: does it fit under the stock ecu cover?

A: If you pull out all of the cooling chambers yes, If you leave the lower chamber the lid is just a little short. Cutting three of the four top edges does allow the factory lid to be reinstalled. We originally had the unit in the car but decided for several reasons to keep everything up front.

Q: I wonder how long a wait to get one...

A: Order soon, the first shipment will go out by the end of the month.

Q: How much for the optional equipment? I couldn't find it on the site.

A: Not really sure yet. The intake airtemp sensor setup will either be; remove tube “A” drill a ___ size hole and tap with ___ size tap. Install fitting and route cable to unit then plug in. Or we also could ship a new tube with a welded B.O.V. flange and temp sensor fitting mounted so it’s plug and play.

Q: Are you going to tune it on a N/A?

A: Yes. I know a lot of people thought they were buying more powerful cars than they did and are not real happy about it, typically our street ported 89-91 N/A cars with a standalone ECU, intake and exhaust usually make 195-210rwhp with a smooth idle. So with the larger port area, increased compression and improved airflow developments, I feel confident 200rwhp will happen! How much more? I am not sure, but we will find out real soon.

Q: Well done. However you’re product specification lacks a detailed description of the maps and functions that are available and how they work in order to determine for which application it might be used and how to tune it.

A: Our intentions are to do screen shots next week, we will have a installation DVD and a basic overview of tuning as well. If any groups would like to have a multiple car tuning session, I would be willing to entertain that idea as well.

Q: I hope the software is less of a chore to muddle through than Motec's archaic stuff.

A: It is Windows based and I feel user friendly. I have tried very hard to make this as easy for the end user as possible. All Interceptor EMS systems will be shipped with a map for your application and updates will be available as we continue to make improvements.

Q: I assume you retain the stock trigger wheel for CAN signal and steering... are you decoding the 36-2-2-2 factory wheel or does it require a second wheel be installed for TDC determination?

A: This system is Plug and Play for the factory equipment. No extra pickups, trigger wheels or wiring is necessary.

Q: As a Canzoomer unit owner (Greddy Emanage), could someone please enlighten myself as to how this is different from the emanage??? I have proven with a few other mods of obtaining 240Hp from the flywheel with the emanage, the only thing is that the car will change this map by recalculating if the car is gunned when slightly cold. How is this new plug and play controller any better than what I have. Also different Rx8's run with differing maps of the specific cars. How can this be obtained on a plug and play unit??Please note base line Rx8 will run 215hp on this same dyno at the flywheel. This is for comparison.

A: You have complete control of the vehicle’s coils, fuel system and injectors. You also can set other system such as: VDIE, Aux port opening and shutter valve opening time. For road race applications or any competition requiring sustained high RPM operation, not allowing these systems to constantly open and close but remain in a 6500 rpm or higher mode will allow more consistant power!

Q: Would like to know more info regarding map sizes, software, ect. I'd also like to know more about where the stock ECU control ends - will it still have some of the safety features like knock retard or limp mode if you overheat or the correct cold start no flooding logic? Will you still be able to get CELs for non-fuel control related items?

A: The CEL will illuminate if detonation is detected but the timing will not be modified. This is commonplace in standalone systems, I have already started designing a plug in that will be available at a later date. If the engine is properly tuned detonation does not occur, it is however possible. If the CEL begins to flash the user should determine the reason before continuing high speed operation. The system has cold crank values and temp enrichment maps to compensate for flooding.

Q: When you say. "This allows you, the end user, to choose which intake, exhaust, turbocharger, nitrous and injector combination you want and not be faced with “I had to put stock ________ back on so I could drive it”.Does this mean that you have a list of aftermarket mods that you can choose from that will change the maps?

A: As different maps become tested I will be happy to install the map with the closest setup as possible. We are giving you Complete Fuel and Ignition Control, we highly recommend you take your vehicle to the dyno and maximize you cars components!

Q: More information on whether it can improve upon the canzoomer for NA applications. I was just about to buy a canzoomer on Monday. But now I'm all and wondering what to do...

A: The Interceptor-X does not allow factory ECU to make any mixture or timing changes so once the system is tuned it will stay tuned. I feel eliminating this conflict of interest between the two units will provide better long term results.

Q: you're selling a product for 1700 bucks and you don’t even have dyno pulls on what kind of gains can be seen? Am I missing something?

A: Please check our website for the results.

Q: -16x16 maps for full fuel and spark tables Does this mean: - it can only control fuel in open loop? - Knock control is disabled?

A: The Interceptor-X does not run closed loop. Once you are satisfied with the performance and drivability of your vehicle you access a separate map and start removing fuel at high speed cruise. I usually remove between 5-10 percent between 2000 and 4500rpm.

Q: Would it function similar to EManage Gold? In talking with Jon over at PTP, here is what he lists the main advantage of the "gold" vs. the "blue" EManage."The new emanage allows you to eliminate the MAF sensor. It also allows you to control the injectors’ trim instead of just being able to add fuel pulse. This is the most important feature I believe mainly because before to take away fuel you had to modify the Airflow Map which in turn modifies timing. This is not something you want to happen every time you try to pull fuel away. The new ecu now taps into the crank trigger which enables the user to see ACTUAL ignition timing and datalog it. This is also very helpful in the tuning process. They also added cool features like TPS accel maps for timing and fuel. Coolant temp and Air temp fuel enrichment maps. Target Air/Fuel map for those willing to purchase a Wideband o2 Sensor and it will datalog Air/Fuel ratio to assist in tuning. And a few other options but I have a few orders to ship I gotta go... If you want more info just call me."

Q: Could you have 2 maps and switch over between them?

A: Yes actually up to four if you would like to. A Sustained high RPM map, race fuel or even a loaner car map cutting RPM at a level you determine.

Q: I see a 16x16 map, but does the interceptor also have its own form of closed loop control? During normal cruising this is something that’s very useful for gas mileage...

A: Yes it has a cruise map

Q:I'm curious about the video...I see that they pretty much stopped it before 9k most of the time. Did it just stop making power and therefore continuing to push it was pointless, or has the 9k range become dangerous?

A: It seemed pointless to continue twisting the turbo any harder, it is not capable of more CFM.The runs were performed in fifth gear, started at 3500rpm an stopped at about 8200rpm

Awesome job Scott & Christy, hopefully that clears up most peoples questions.

Do you feel 16x16 maps are large enough for most tuning applications? could that be expanded? Is it a software or hardware issue?

In addition, what type of processor/ECU is driving your box? is it one we have heard of?

Scott indicated to me that it will come with a tuned base map (for GReddy turbo) identical to the last one shown on the video and they ask for your mods when you order (exhaust, etc) so there will be a little variation based on your set-up. If I remember correctly the system will hold four different maps in memory.

Downright freaky....somewhere between the Firefox browser I was running and the LAN here at work I'm unable to see anything ending in the .net domain. IE...no problem, I can see it all.

Oh well, I guess I should keep that IE link handy after all...

Round 2: Q & A for Interceptor-X EMS

Hello Everyone:

Sorry for the delay. These questions can only be answered by Scott. He is extremely busy. Our staff is helping us make sure he get's a copy of each one to answer.

Below are more answers to your questions. We will respond again this weekend, Thanks for your patience.

Question List Created - Friday, August 5

Q: Will this work on an AT?

A: At this time we have not attempted an install on the A/T models.

Q: What are we going to do about heat in the ECU box??? My CZ gets so hot I can't touch it. Should the cover be designed with fans that draw air out of the box, thus pulling more flow through the front inlet tube below the bumper?

A: We are working on that at this time.

Q: Wasn’t Maurice (Canzoomer ) working with an unnamed company on A different ECU than the E-MANAGE for both TURBO and NA RX8'S , could this new Mazport system have something to do with him .???

A: This EMS is not developed in conjunction with the Canzoomer group.

Q: Can we get an extension harness to put this AND the stock ECU someplace less hostile? Our company engineer laughed and shook his head when I showed him where the ECU on the '8 is.. its just a damn stupid place for it. Unless there would be too much signal loss from extending the cables, I'd much rather throw this whole 9 yards under a seat or into my trunk. Electronics + heat = bad.Over 300hp on stock injectors? That's one thing I have trouble swallowing.. aren't these small injectors? I would think that 300whp on stock injectors would be pushing them close to static, which is not a good thing at all.

A: We are using proven reliable components and do not feel that heat will damage the Interceptor-X when mounted in the stock location. A longer custom harness would add cost, require more work for the user and if not installed correctly could introduce the chaffing factor. The injectors in the RX-8 are small but should provide enough volume for 300rwhp. I can tell you this, there is more injector duty still unused in the video. We stopped pushing for more RWHP due to the turbo not fuel or spark issues. Overspooling = Heat and Equipment Abuse

Q: I think you did not understand what I meant. Does it then give you full authority on where you want to run open or closed loop? Is there an open/closed loop table?Say, if I want your system to run in closed loop fuelling mode, using the OEM wide band lambda sensor, at 4500 rpm, 0.65 load, and at a lambda of 1.15, can I do it?Also, you did not answer the question regarding knock control. Are you loosing that feature with your system?

A: There is no closed loop operation in this system. You would use the cruise map to trim fuel values for economy. Since the factory ECU is not firing the coils the factory knock control system cannot retard the timing. The CEL will flash if it detects knock at which point the user should stop spirited driving, determine why and make the required corrections.

Q: So for those of us who are sick of waiting, can we buy the PTP turbo kit that's already complete and buy this unit? instead of the EMS PTP will be offering?I know I will have to tune it, but where would I tune this?

A: Yes this system is compatible with Turbo kits, Superchargers or Nos. We recommend using a wideband equipped Dyno and a qualified tuner.

Q: I would like to know if you could advance the timing? This is not a trick question but I know you have full control of timing but can you only retard it or do both?

A: The user can advance, retard and adjust split at RPM and manifold pressure points.

Q: OK, for Olddragger and whoever else was dropping me hints. I have no doubt that this is a fine unit and would work.My problem with it is that if I were to sell you all of the components, meaning Blower, drive, brackets, ducting, belts, nuts and bolts. Hoses, wires and more for say $4000. What sense could it make to up the price 40% to $5600 just to include a box with $100 worth of electronic components in it?I'm not knocking them, they feel they need to recover their R&D with so many units sold. I'm just envious that I can't do it. I know I've got more R&D in my compressor then anyone has in a controller.

A: Sir I do not doubt you have extensive R&D or that you have a superior design compared to your competitors. I have spoke with several people about it and must say it’s pretty exciting. Please keep in mind we are not selling “a box with $100 worth of electronic components in it”. We are selling a plug and play EMS that hopefully will be used to help extract power from your product you are developing!

Q: It's cool that you guys have some real engine management now, but my god that markup is insane if that unit is what I'm thinking it is.

A: We have given the consumer what they have been asking for. If you consider the normal cost of a Motec, Haltech or AEM, which do not offer a plug and play system for this application, we feel we are competitively priced.

Q: On the other hand, I'm a bit disappointed by the crudity or simplicity of the Engine Management side of your product. As an engine calibration engineer I have a lot of technical requirements for such a system and your product would fail (in this initial spec, anyway) to satisfy them. That said, I must admit your product will probably be the dog's bollocks for 90% of the users and, therefore, a commercial success if you have got the reliability right.

A: Thank you. A reliable system that will give the user complete Fuel/ Ignition control while allowing other factory systems to function was the goal. Keeping it affordable and user friendly for the masses was a requirement. Obviously a much more complex system could have been developed, but we are targeting a market that does not want a $5000 system with features most of them will never use.

Q: I'm trying to buy the Mazsport ecu and PTP turbo kit.I will need a tuner to tune the ecu though..Can someone plzzzzz let me know where I can find a reliable tuner around MD area?It doesn't have to be MD; I can travel as far as two states. Thanks guys.

A: I cannot refer you to a tuner in the area. If however you and several others would like to set up a multicar session in your area, cover my expenses and agree on a flat fee for "X" number of cars I can travel. Depending on the staff loading and unloading the cars, we could tune 5-7 a day. Let me know if you would like to set somthing up.

Q: Been checking your website out. AWESOME. How much for the Interceptor-X and Greddy Turbo kit total installed if I make a road trip to Florida? :D

Q: One of the best things about the Greddy kit is the small turbo spools quickly and power comes on at about 3000 RPM. I saw in the Q&A (or somewhere) that you're working on an upgrade to the Greddy kit. I assume this means a bigger, better flowing turbo. Can you tell us what unit you're thinking about using, and will it maintain the fast-spooling characteristics of the current one Greddy provides with the kit?

Also.. I think there are a lot of us who would use the EMS for a N/A type car. You have already mentioned that 200 - 210 whp is likely with a N/A car. Do you plan on using your EMS to show just how much can be had with a proper tuning? If you produced a video similar to what you did before that would be great but it's not expected.

Any updates on your progress for this are appreciated very much.

Thankx!

Stock Greddy turbo!

Would somone please change the title of this subforum. The Turbo unit in the video was a stock Greddy unit as supplied in the kit. It was not modified in any way. Thanks, Scott

Round 3: Q & A

Questions and Answers Round 3:[/

Q: Can you just clear the cels before you go in to the dealer?

A: We have not taken the car to the dealer to be flashed so we do not know. We do know that the system can be removed in less than 1 hour for a back to stock scenario.

Q: When you say limiting production run, you will continue to make the units correct? Are there parts constraints or other limiting factors?

A: Yes. We will continue production in production runs. No we do not anticipate any issues with parts or other limiting factors.

Q: Do you feel 16x16 maps are large enough for most tuning applications? could that be expanded? Is it a software or hardware issue? In addition, what type of processor/ECU is driving your box? is it one we have heard of?

A: Yes 16 point maps are large enough for most tuning applications. It could be expanded at an additional cost in the future. The unit would need to be sent back and it would require a Software change. I would prefer not to disclose the specific internal components used in our system.

Q: can you choose between different maps without the laptop as well? (ie a physical external selector **** to choose the appropriate map for the appropriate application?

A: No you cannot, it will require a PC connection.

A: There is a very fundamental difference’s between these systems. The Interceptor-X does not use modified factory signals to control the engine. I believe the Emange unit does.

Q: Are you going to tune for the 4port/auto?

A: Definitely. We are spending more R&D time on the 6port motors currently, Turbo and N/A 6speed vehicles and then the 4port/auto. We do realize the auto could use more power and will be working on one hopefully in turbo and N/A configurations in the near future.

Q: So this will come with a pretuned map for the Greddy turbo?

A: If you would like, we will install the map with the settings from our Greddy turbo Dyno results. No vehicle is ever really tuned until the wideband tuning has been performed.

Q: Scott indicated to me that it will come with a tuned base map (for GReddy turbo) identical to the last one shown on the video and they ask for your mods when you order (exhaust, etc) so there will be a little variation based on your set-up. If I remember correctly the system will hold four different maps in memory?

A: The system will store 4 separate maps. Switching between maps requires just a few key strokes.

Q: Any incentives? Other than being the first to own?

A: The ability to tune your vehicle and maximize the performance!

Q: Been checking your website out. AWESOME. How much for the Interceptor-X and Greddy Turbo kit total installed if I make a road trip to Florida?

A: Please call Scott at 727-530-9960 for package pricing.

A: We are just about done and will be testing shortly. To Maxamize the customers dollar we are not going to abandon the Greddy unit. The customer would remove there turbo and send it to us, we will modify the unit internally and ship it back rebuilt and upgraded. The unit will bolt back on to the manifold and ductwork you already have. The Spool-up should still remain good especially with the Interceptor-X because running correct AFR’s will yield slightly more heat inside the manifold which helps with spool up.

Im considering buying the GReddy kit and tuning for 8 PSI,
Since we list the car components in the purchase area, and put down 8 PSI, would it be pre tuned to run at that?

And if yes, would it be plug and play? Or would it require more tuning after installation?

thanks

-Bryan

The way a map based system works is that it is programmed for a certain a/f ratio and timing at a certain rpm and/or load. If they supplied a tune for the Greddy of say 12 psi, it would also be tuned for 8 psi or anything below it. This is because at a lower boost level, you are in a diffeent area of the map. This is why you can have an economy cruise setting and a power full throttle setting all in the same map and don't need closed loop. Different loads and different rpms get different values. Alot of people are thinking of ecu tuning from a 2D graph viewpoint when you need to think in 3D.

oooh, i get it now

So its basically an out of the box solution, I could plug and play and go?

This is what im thinking

-I Have to tune the E-Manage that comes with the kit if I want to operate well at 8 PSI
-If I buy this ECU, It will be pre tuned for the Greddy, so I could just plug and play with this ecu, and justify the purchase by saving the cost of tuning the e-manage, as well as selling the E-Manage box.

Am I thinking in the right mindset here?

Im just not sure If this makes sense, *sigh* im an FI rook.

if you are seriously looking at the greddy turbo, I would do some research on the differences between the emanage and a standalone ECU. Now in fairness, this is really a quasi-standalone, but still, the level of precision tuning possible with mazsport unit is an order of magnitude above the emanage.

Not to knock Greddy, overall, the kit for the price is quite a piece of work, and with proper tuning its a real value. I'm not a fan of the emanage for our car, I think it works well for some other cars, but our car is almost to advanced for it.
