I currently have a K&N Typhoon Air Intake setup on my 8 (as I am told by someone here) and I was curious to know if I could switch it to the once listed on the website posted above (3rd one down from the top)?

This is probably a stupid question, but I do not know a lot about this, so any help is good help for me!

Do I just take the old filter off and replace it with that one? I am new to Air Intakes so I want to make sure if I buy it I know how to replace it.

Is it pretty easy?

^you remove the WHOLE airbox assembly, airbox, and accordion tube, make sure you unscrew the MAF....everything else is cake, on a scale from 1-10 for being a noob it should be about a 3.5...30 minutes at the most

I want that Intake that is in the link in the first post. I am not sure what I have to remove in order to install the black Typhoon Intake. What do I have to remove?

I wouldn't bother getting the K&N Typhoon if that's what you are ordering. I ran that intake for 50,000 miles and it actually makes the performance worse and causes issues with your fuel trims.

The stock intake provides plenty of airflow for the car and it does so in the same fashion a cold air intake system works. The K&N will draw hot engine air meaning whatever power gains you'd get as a result will be negated by hot intake temps and excessive fuel trims.

If you want to change your intake i recommend the Racing Beat Intake and Duct, or either the AEM and Mazdaspeed Intakes. I can only speak for the Racing Beat setup, i love it. I have heard good things about the AEM and MS Intakes

The AEM or MS intake is a fine swap because they both use the stock diameter tubing so it won't mess up your mass airflow readings.

In either case, the HP claims are pretty low...even the RB only claims about 3 whp which is within a margin of error on any dyno.

If you must get something for your intake, just get a drop in K&N filter or a green filter.

Otherwise you're looking at about $100 per whp which is quite a lot of cash. I made the mistake of throwing about $2,000 at my RX8 right away and I think I actually lost power in the process.

I knew the Racing Beat Intake and Duct was not going to add that much performance. I love the sound of the intake at WOT. I do believe that the dyno was not accurate because with the Duct, more high flow at higher speeds, that could not be reproduced on the dyno. Unless Racing Beat had some powerful fans.

I agree with Flashwing. I had the Typhoon system for awhile on my car. I loved it at first, but soon realized that the sound of the intake makes it seem like you are going faster than you really are. It didnt seem to pull as hard as it did stock. It did seem like it was running lean as well.

I took the 2 shields out of the stock intake box and put a K&N drop in filter and put it all back in. I have noticed a noticeable difference in power. Its such a cheap modification and seems to work way better than a lot of the aftermarket intakes, or so I've read.

Here's all the proof you need to understand how much of a piece of garbage the K&N is...



What you see here is Approx 130 degrees IAT at 70mph cruise when it was about 112 degrees outside. This is w/ A/C and windows up around 3pm in the afternoon.



This shows some stop and go traffic with the temperature around 100 degrees and you can see here that the AEM is approx 100 to 102 degrees for IAT's.

The AEM provides near ambient intake air temperatures even when the temperatures are extreme. The K&N was 20+ degrees warmer when I was cruising at 70mph. This is with a removed VFAD as well.

That would be the best suggestion I could offer. I ditched my stock intake a while back and I got the AEM rather cheap so I went for it. Otherwise your stock intake is the best for what you have at the moment.

If you honestly want to modify the intake put a drop in filter and call it a day. There is a lot of other stuff you are better off spending money on part wise.

it uses your stock intake setup but you add a K&N drop in filter which will allow the stock intake to flow a little bit more air. A quick 1-2 hp gain for cheap without tearing out anything or replacing parts.

Just from reading this thread im going to ditch the k&n intake and put stock on it already has a k&n drop in filter.

I have the AEM as well and love it but i bought it just because it was a big deal (50% off the street price and new from a friend).
Said that, the fact that a company tells customers not to buy a product they sell is worth a 1000 explanations about its effectiveness.

DO NOT BUY the K&N Typhoon!

If you must buy an intake do like evryone has said and:

1. Keep stock intake and buy the ram air duct from racing beat.
2. Buy the racing beat in take and duct
3. AEM/MS Intake.

Short ram is horrible for your 8. I remember when I had my K&N typhoon I would see IAT of 20 degrees and higher while idling.

Alright so it looks like they only thing I might do is switch out the Air Filter for a K&N Drop-In Air Filter.

But my next question is this: there are so many sizes and shapes to the air filters, does it matter what shape and/or size I get?

Yes it matters. Go to a autozone/ checker/ advanced auto parts store in your area and ask them to look up what filter size the K&N panel filter is for the RX8. If they don't have it in stock they will order it and you will have it in a couple of days.
