EU Mazda Dealer (Germany) Hosts Global Mazda Cosmo Sport Rally

Mazda Dealer Auto Frey (Germany) Hosts Global Mazda Cosmo Sport Rally

Mazda to ship 14 Cosmo Sports from Japan to Germany, five more from Europe expected

Non-stop rally highlights from 10-15 August 2009

Leverkusen, 4 August 2009.

For over 40 years, the rotary engine has symbolized Mazda’s innovative expertise. The Japanese company began its long rotary-engine history in 1967 with the now-legendary Mazda Cosmo 110 Sport. An elite group of Cosmo Sport owners from around the world and fans of the rotary icon will gather at an international Cosmo Sport rally in Gersthofen, Germany, near Augsburg, from 10 to 15 August 2009.

A total of 14 Cosmo Sport models have also made the long trip from Japan to Europe on a Mazda transport ship, and will make up one of the many exciting highpoints of the event. These unique cars arrived in Antwerp harbour at the end of last week, where they were transferred to land for the final leg of their journey to southern Germany with the Mosolf transport company . Awaiting them are not only a number of Cosmo Sport owners from around the world, but also five additional Cosmo Sport vehicles and their owners from various European countries.

This kind of rally is unique to Europe, and has been organized by the German Mazda dealer Auto Frey, with transport of the Japanese Cosmo Sport vehicles handled by Mazda Motors Deutschland and Mazda Logistics Europe. The Bavarian-based dealer Auto Frey has been a dedicated Mazda franchise for over three decades, and owns one of the world’s most exclusive collections of Mazda heritage vehicles. Many of these cars have the revolutionary rotary technology from Felix Wankel under the bonnet. The collection encompasses about 160 vehicles, roughly 45 of them with rotary engines, and is housed in buildings near
Gersthofen.

No surprise that one of the international Cosmo rally’s highpoints promises to be a visit to this unique collection. The participants will travel in convoy to see it on 12 August.

Also awaiting the rally’s international guests is a schedule that includes visits to the prettiest locations in southern Germany. Planned is a visit to the Rotary Institute and, of course, a tour of Felix Wankel’s home, along with visits to the world-famous Neuschwanstein castle, and a tasty glass of Klosterbräu beer at Andechs. Participants will also have the chance to test-drive the major facelift version of the Mazda RX-8, the latest generation of sports car with a rotary engine.

Mazda Cosmo 110 S was the first production car with a two-rotor engine. It went into production in Japan in 1967, shortly before the NSU Ro 80. Its 10A engine had a displacement of 2 x 491 cm³ that developed 110 PS of maximum power at 7,000 rpm and maximum torque of 142 Nm at 5,000 rpm. The rotary housing and side covers were made of aluminium. The surface of the rotary housing was hardened by chrome plating, and the side covers coated with chromium molybdenum steel. Exactly 1,176 units of this exclusive sports coupe were built until 1972.

This absolutely FANTASTIC event is being organized by a new friend of mine Walter Frey, the Dealer principal and Owner of 'Auto Frey', a very successful Mazda Dealer in Germany.

Walter a Mazda Dealer and Enthusiast who was featured in the World Wide Summer edition of Mazda's Zoom Zoom Magazine.

Walter, is a great man dedicated to ALL Mazda's, particularly Rotaries.

He is currently overhauling a rare Mazda R130 FWD with the 13A (long stroke) Rotary.

For those who have the money and are interested and who can travel to Germany, there are still tickets or seats available, only for serious requests.

The tour includes, Germany, Switzerland and Alps, to Felix Wankel's home, over 3 days and nights with motel accommodation.

Could you imagine such a road tour in Cosmo's and other Rotaries...

I wish I could afford to go...

BTW: Mazda Japan actually paid for the transportation of these Japanese (owned and VERY much loved) Cosmo's to Germany.

Look at the condition, some are better than new!

Just got an email from Walter..looks like it is not him in the pic (double)..
I sent him a link of this thread...

Mazda Europe are giving them 5 new Series II (I guess) RX-8's to use.

GRRR, wish I was there...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..GRRRRRRRRR

His reply..
Hi Ash,
thank you for posting the info.
I like these pictures. We should reveived all the Cosmos today.
A transport agency bring the cars from Belgium to Germany. Can`t wait to see them live.
Sad that you can not be hers. Mazda Europe also give us 5 new RX-8 for that time that those people
without a Cosmo can also ride with us.
I am really nervous now.
I will send you some pictures from the meeting.

Take care,

Walter

Hi Ash,

how are you my friend ?
Here are some pictures. The meeting was fantastic. A lot of work but
at the end it was worth it. We hat 19 Cosmo Sports at one place.
It was such a good time. I do not think that we can set this up again.

Walter

BTW: I am guessing here but 19 Cosmo's in one event at one place must be a World Record outside of Japan...at least.

You can translate the sites into english and than you should know more about the event.

A global car meeting with only 19 participants? However, the Cosmo-Treff in Gersthofen one of the most exclusive classic car events in Europe.

Long journey: 35 Cosmo-Japanese fans came with their cars to the meeting in Augsburg. (Photo: Press Inform)

Car dealer Walter Frey has lost his heart for more than 30 years to the Mazda brand. With the sale of new CX-7, Mazda3 or used 626 but it is not done long ago.The senior and his two sons, Joachim and Marcus are considered the largest specialist Wankel technology in Europe. Collectors qualities of the 65-year company founder has long since spread into the Japanese headquarters of Mazda Motors.

There, the Augsburg car dealer is known as a spotted dog. His car collection with over 160 cars includes more than 100 rare Mazda models, including 50 Wankler. The unusual Mazda's expertise allows Walter Frey as the only Europeans to be included in the elite "Cosmo Owners Club". Reason enough, that took place this year, the first international meeting in Cosmo Gersthofen near Augsburg.

"The idea was born in the New Year's reception last year, when I was with my son Mark in Japan," says Frey. At the Mazda Owners Club, he came upon the idea that the Japanese fans of the legendary Mazda Cosmo Sport 110 S but also time to come to Bavaria.

Frey himself has two Cosmo - and so it was more inviting than a jolly mood, the Japanese friends for a return visit. "The first was just an idea, but then became more concrete," says Frey. "Time and again, to write and ask. Only one said yes, then two and then it became more and more."

Ultimately decided to Cosmo about 35 fans to travel to Europe. "14 vehicles were sent by ship in late May on a trip from Hiroshima to Antwerp," says Frey. "From there, they were then taken from two vans to Augsburg."

With such a great meeting and Mr. Kuby, Cosmo-Pope did not fail. The worked until two years ago as developers and the Mazda Cosmo knows like no other. ""I started in 1963 with Mazda and had to do the same with the development of Cosmo," says the now retired Japanese. "Initially we had very many problems with the car. The first we have to get a grip, when the 60 first prototype took to the streets."From 1967 to 1973 were produced by the Mazda Cosmo Sport 110 S nearly 1,200 vehicles.

"About 300 vehicles are expected to be still on the road in Japan. In Europe and the U.S. are almost nonexistent," said Kuby. So sind beim Treffen denn auch nicht nur die 14 Fahrzeuge aus Japan vertreten, sondern auch eine Handvoll Modelle aus England, Griechenland, Österreich und der Schweiz. Thus, at the meeting for not only the 14 vehicles from Japan represented, but also a handful of models from England, Greece, Austria and Switzerland.

One of the two Cosmo by Walter Frey is also included. If he takes out his business card to the Mazda Owners Club, just make many big eyes. Because then it is less about the name and address, but the current production number of his Cosmo. One of the two models Frey has the number 100,005 - which means: He's from the official production vehicles, the current production number five.

Cosmo-Star Parade is the Mazda Cosmo by Senji Hoshino. Der ist nicht nur einer der wenigen Japan-Sportler in der seltenen Farbe rotmetallic, sondern auch ein Fahrzeug aus erster Hand. He is not only one of the few Japan-athletes in the rare color rotmetallic, but also a vehicle first hand.

"I have purchased the Cosma 1973 produced as the final model for 1.58 million yen," said Hoshino, who lives about two hours north of Tokyo. "Since then I've driven 190,000 kilometers with him.
