An engine attracts fans from all over the world to Gersthofen
12.08.2009 17:25 clock
By Christian Paul Gersthofen The star of the day is under the hood. And yet they are all just seinetwegen here: Britons, Americans, Frenchmen - and Japanese. Fans of the Wankel engine from all over the world cavort on the grounds of the car at the Frey Gersthoferstraße Flotowstraße. They marvel at 19 Mazda Cosmo Sport 110 - the first models with which the Japanese car brand from 1967 Wankel its tradition founded.

"I believe that this wankel meeting the first and only time," says Joachim Frey. Because his car is equipped with the event a real coup: None of the neatly strung coupés is ever been sold in Germany. Only seven car enthusiasts in Europe can call their own Cosmo. Five of them are now on the ground in Gersthofen, the rest coming from Japan, including drivers and attendants.

Sound? Like a vacuum cleaner. But only if one is maliciously

Shigeki Mukai is from Osaka, Japan's third-largest city in the west of the country. He is a member of the Cosmo Sport Owner's Club, as the specially prepared 'logo on his business card impressively demonstrates. "The Cosmo, I have a dream come true", the 57-year-old from the interpreter to translate Sayaka Morimoto. The Wankel engine is very compact and allows for high speeds, he says. Frey adds: "He runs like a turbine. If one is malicious, then he sounds like a vacuum cleaner. "Frey is not malicious, but the technology has long been in ruins. "A fascinating engine. He is the reason why Frey has organized the meeting. After his father and his brother in January 2008 in Japan were, they spontaneously decided to prepare a second invitation. A year round was organized and planned, then a program. Via e-mail Frey coordinated everything with the Japanese fans.

Eight weeks ago, the Cosmo-rider their treasures in the port of Hiroshima in the belly of a boat driven, target: the Belgian Antwerp. From there it went by truck after Gersthofen. "It would not be possible, this orientation, if it is not so much fun would be," says Frey. On Tuesday the group was in the Wankel Museum in Lindau, until Friday sightseeing in the surrounding area, of course, always in Cosmo.

And the 110 hp strong and not even 1,20 meters high sports themselves fascinated Americans. Glenn Roberts and Valerie Arizona for the first time in Germany, even the love for her because of Mazda. "They are just sweet," says Valerie Roberts. Daheim stands beside a Cosmo, a Carol R 360 in the garage, a coupe version of the first ever Mazdas (1960). In Gersthofen the couple had the opportunity, the latest heir to the tradition-Wankel engine, the new RX-8, to drive. With 231 horsepower, he offered the Roberts on German motorways entirely new perspectives: "I think once we are nearly 180 kilometers per hour driven," says Glenn Roberts. "That would be impossible in America."

Special aggregate excited not only its driver

"The Wankel engine is very special," says Mazda Spokeswoman Karin Lindel, "an absolute exotic." In Gersthofen shows that its position in the shadow of petrol and diesel engines not only for its drivers, but also the attraction for journalists is: A Japanese editor groups the Cosmo-owners for an image to their cars, Joachim Frey be the man of Radio just give an interview as a local TV station and a Frenchman wants to know how the car is moving.

Shigeki Mukai could betray him: "It's crazy fun," he says smiling and disappears to the next photo opportunity.
"I think once we are nearly 180 kilometers per hour driven," says Glenn Roberts. "That would be impossible in America."

Walter, is a great man dedicated to ALL Mazda's, particularly Rotaries.

He is currently overhauling a rare Mazda R130 FWD with the 13A (long stroke) Rotary.

For those who have the money and are interested and who can travel to Germany, there are still tickets or seats available, only for serious requests.

The tour includes, Germany, Switzerland and Alps, to Felix Wankel's home, over 3 days and nights with motel accommodation.

Could you imagine such a road tour in Cosmo's and other Rotaries...

I wish I could afford to go...
Do you happen to know if this car is a yellow R130 Luce rotary coupe?????

Yes, the R130 is so much like the Mazda 1500... Mazda 1800.
Walter's R130 looks in great condition 'elucev'.

My Father bought a brand new 1968-9 Mazda 1500 Sedan in Royal Blue.
Classic looking car designed by Bertone, apparently the rumor was Alfa Romeo rejected the design, Toyo Kogyo Co Ltd picked it up.

Dad's 1500 had bench seats, 4 speed on the column change.
Beautiful Chrome and Body work, SOLID thick Panels.
I still see one or two every now and then on the roads.

Even the RX-8 has some 1969 Mazda 1500 parts in it.

Then came the Mazda 1500 SS which had bucket seats, 4 on the floor, and Twin Double Barrel Carburettors, Yellow Fog Lamps, Hood Scoops, front Disc Brakes and Tacho.

Then before the Mazda Capella 1600 and RX-2 was the Mazda 1800.

Same as the 1500 but a larger 1800cc engine, slightly different dash and other improvements like standard Front Disc Brakes.

The Mazda 1500 was what set Mazda up in Australia.

Gentlemen,

I'm new down there, usually an Italian cars freak but always Passionate for old Japanese cars.

I have the oportunity to buy a car to restore.

It's the last of the 3 cars that were ever sold new in France, w/ documents still in the 1st Owber's name.

Unfortunately, it's been vandalized more than 35 years ago.

ALL the glasses are broken, the front lights covers, the rear lights, the dashboard, tachos...

Does any of you know where to find the cherished spare parts I would need to complete this project ?

Thx.

Pls see pics of the car....
