Hi everyone,

Like a lot of owners, the rust on my rotors drives me crazy! I've read all the posts on the good paint (G2) and the step by step procedure to DIY for rotors and calipers.

But, i'm busy as hell (getting married in a couple of months) and don't have the time to do this myself. So, my question:

Do you know of anyone who could paint the rotors and calipers for me? Love to give the business to a fellow 8 owner who loves to tinker and has done their own wheels. Barring that, a good pro would be great too.

I just want to get rid of the damn rust!

Just did my rotors on the weekend. Providing you have the time, it is really simple. I devoted about an an hour total for the rear rotors.

I know it's not rocket science, but i truly don't have the time.... And i don't have a torque wrench, a stable jack that i'm all that comfortable with or even the space to do it, so I'd rather get some help on this one.

 

BLUE BEACH, Sorry i never ment it to sound sarcastic. Im sure any body shop would be able to do it for you. And I know, the real question is "who do you trust?" I felt the same way and thats why I ended up doing mine myself.

 

No offense taken. To be honest, i feel like i SHOULD be able to do it myself and like i should want to ... i like to pamper my baby as much as the next guy

Right now, it's all i can do to keep her clean though.

Wing, I just couldent stand the rust any more and danielson had done his a while back and still looks great. Why do you ask? Dont get me all worried:p

 

Because, teh paint will last 10 seconds on the rotors OR if it does stick will greatly reduce braking. Paint your calipers all you want but NOT your rotors!

 

Wing, they are talking about the "hats" only and not the braking surface . . . They are painted from the factory on this car because they are so visible but poorly as I have seen on other peoples cars. Mine are still in good shape but I don't drive in winter and I avoid some rainy days also. I think some high-end rotors are cadmium plated or something so they stay looking good, particularly when cross drilled or slotted. On my other cars they are just raw cast iron front and back. They make them from cast iron because it has very good heat dissipation properties but it rusts super fast, like visibly in minutes after getting wet. Repainting will only work as a temporary measure and rust will eat in from the edges and start flaking the paint off with time. All one can hope to do is slow the deterioration down a bit, there is no real permanent solution other than keeping the car completely dry. I will paint the hats on my 8 if I have to down the road, it probably wouldn't take more that a few hours to do all four corners and there are really no issues with doing it.

 

hehe, yes that makes much more sense. Don't get the car wet, that solves the problem, don't drive it in the rain and don't wash it. Is that so much to ask?

 

I don't think it's too much to ask, the car gets all dirty in the rain ;-) I would chalk this issue up to a minor cosmetic/annoyance issue that is cheap to fix. To be reminded of what really crappy looking extremely high maintenance brakes are like I need look no further than the Audi in my driveway. I have replaced more VW and Audi brake parts over the years than you can imagine, particularly rear rotors and callipers. So far the brakes on the RX-8 are golden in comparison . . .
