2007 Grand Am Races at Barber Motorpsorts Park-July 19-22

Ok, we need to start the planning for this one, now. I know it is not until July, but I want this years turnout to be better than the last two years. In 2005 we had a good turnout, last year we had over 20 RX-8, some RX-7's and a couple of other Mazdas. I want to see more than that this year. We always have a blast, it is a good Saturday spent with rotor heads, and watching some world class racing. We usually pay a visit to the pits, spend some time with our friends at Roar Racing and Speedsource.

So, who wants to go.

I'm in for sure. I will start working on discounted tickets and a reserved parking spot for us as well
I assume this year we want to reserve for Saturday and Sunday.

We should coordinate with Miatas and other Mazdas as well. That way we can get to be the largest group and have parade laps. Let the Miata folks know. They're crazy and will come as a huge group!

I don't think we'll be able to get all the corral. I like the idea of having a lot of people come but I also like to keep this a rotary outing. The occasional straggler piston person is OK but I think this is an RX8 Club outing where you can "bring a friend". As for parade laps, I don't recall there being parade laps on the day of the Grand Am Cup races. I didnt attend the Rolex race so I don't know what happened then.

Now we can get a group of people together for the Walter Mitty and do track touring there

I agree, I would like to keep it a rotary thing. I will put the same post up on the darkside, and over at another rotary forum I visit from time to time. I would like it to be a lot of RX-8's, but would not mind the occasional 7 either. Touring laps on Sunday, I don't care so much about.

And yes, I would like to have car corral space on Sunday too, I won't miss that this year, it was a blast last year, despite the rain.

Hey guys, if you need help on tickets and parking area, let me know what you need. I am on the advisory board for Zoom motorsports which runs the events at Barbers. I will be happy to help any way that I can. We are having our first quarterly meeting in Feb. so let me know. David.

The past 2 years Sabrina has been helping me. Is she still the person to talk to?

Hey guys! I'm in. I had a great time last year. Maybe this year we can meet here in Bham for dinner Fri or Sat night. Last year, we got rained out and sent home before I could catch anyone to see if ya'll were going out to eat. I'm sure some of the Bham group would love to come too.

OD, still working on the heads and cam combo. I have allready purchased an LS7 block and ARE dry sump system. I have decided, with much research, to go solid lift with jessel rockers. The problem with the LS7 heads are that the flow numbers are so high, that in order to get the max out of the engine, I am going to have to spin it to 7500 to 7800 rpm. Cant do that with hydraulic lifters plus its going to have to be a min of 12.5 to 1 c/r to get the hp numbers that I want. Thanks for asking. Oh by the way, are any of yall going to Road Atlanta with the Peachtree chapter BMWCCA in March. I will be there for three days instructing and so will Robert Russom and my brother Tom. They too will be insructing. David

hey David
certainly understand the engine configuation questions
did you consider the AFR 225cc heads and a 234/238 degree at 0.050hydraulic big stick setting on top of a 383 displacement ----via the usual overbore of 3.905 and eagle 4.0 stoker crank, callies rods and mahle 7cc pistons. compression ratio 11/1 and if prepped and buttoned up right will give you a flywheel hp around 585 and approx 520 lb-ft torque. nice smooth power curves with peak power at approx 6.4K. Course this is using mamo-ported FAST LSX intake manifold and a FAST 90mm throttle body. but this is also on pump gas! Its a good under the curve build with a punch up top.
course a nice solid roller242/248 with stud mounted rockers(crane or jessel)(dreaded high rpm valve train instability) can push it up to approx 610 hp at 7K with no lost of torque. depends what do you want. and this is WITHOUT the dry sump!
I dont want to drive it! Gets insane.
I will have to check out the BMWCCA event --I was unaware of it. Heck we are all hoping the track will be ready by our nasa event mid march. I hear they cancelled the scca event in Feb.
again appreciate the help and maybe at least i can pop up and watch the Germans.

After discussing with the wife... CMP, Barber Grand Am and our summer vacation, I can only work in CMP & our summer vacation. So I’m officially bowing out of the Barber Grand Am. L8... you may want to get Dano to room with you and let him cancel his room. I'm kind of bummed because I was really looking forward to seeing the Sunday race especially. I'll just have to wait till next year. Sorry guys. This is a special event and I'm really going to miss you all for this one.

Good thing is I will still be able to do CMP so my advertised coupon for sale is now void!

I created a bit of confusion by opening an identical thread to L8APEX - have requested the admins combine them to ease in the confusion.

question, do we need to call Charlie, and see if we can get into the Speedsource pits on Sunday, I would really like to get to see teh GT car up close and personal. We also need to talk to Rob, and see if we can drop by their pits on Saturday again, since it was fun last time, and would be fun to do again.

I will probably be at the race too but not as a spectator. There is no need to talk to Speedsource or Roar about going to their pits, just check in when you get there and find a good time with them to discuss the cars.

BTW, the Roar ST cars are now faster than the Speedsource ST cars. Probably because Speedsource is concentrating on there GT cars.
