I took my rx8 to get its oil changed. After it was done, the car idled very rough and would not stay on, and the check engine light was flashing. I brought the car back to the oil change place thinking mabye they put in too much oil. They drained it and chaned the filter again. This seemed to make matters worse and the car struggled to start and a white colored smoke started coming from under the hood. I got the to the dealership, barley, and it killed with lots of white smoke. There is a chance they may have put in 6 qts instead of 3.7/4....hmmmmmmmm

I've seen too much oil gum-up the SSV valve, but I doubt the valve would stick right away.
My first thought would be the MAF sensor getting contaminated due to excessive oil running up the breather hose and into your intake.
I would clean the MAF with some contact cleaner.
Also, you can remove the accordion tube before the throttle body and see/feel for any oil residue.
That will tell you for sure if this was caused by excessive oil.

Reason: spelling
yeah the MAF is very possible to get oilon it if you overfill it even by about a qt it will get oil in the intake piping and hence getting it on the MAF

Oh boy.......what a mess. If they really, really put in 6, then yeah........it's probably all over the MAF, the intake tube, the air filter, etc.
As someone just said..............all you folks that don't know how to at least change your oil, or think you're too busy................here ya go! It's only a matter of time!

^exactly if you know how to do it it should not take more than 20 minutes and that's with using the stock scissor jack that comes withthe car and clean up

The "etc" being the throttle body, intake manifold extension, SSV......
I would definitely check for oil residue before and after the throttle body.
It'll be easy to clean it now than later.

I'm interested in the white smoke and the flashing CEL (miss)...
Perhaps they spilled oil the first time on your coils or something like that but didn't tell you about it. Overfilling wouldn't lead to a bunch of smoke... even then, burning oil doesn't cause white smoke.
Plus if it smoked all the way to the dealer and was still white smoke and then it died in the dealer parking lot, I don't know if it would be caused by too much oil. Or I'm missing something obvious.
I'm very interested to see what the dealer comes up with.

ok,
why. the cel was flashing at idle??? doubtful.. was it flashing at full throttle?
white colored smoke is a coolant leak..
the dealership. barley?
depending on the oil drain, i put in 6qts. but how would you know what they did?
this post is a fishing trip.. let us know if you have a clue.

A similar thing happened to me. I brought the car into the stealer for an oil change. After the oil change, I drove home and checked the oil level (something I do regularly). The oil level was so high, I could not see where it ended on the dipstick. Even after wiping it and putting it back in/out again, the whole dip stick was covered in oil.
I didn't drive the car the next day, but drove it on the following day. It was fine for a while and then it started misfiring and trying to stall. The CEL light was flashing. I pulled over and looked under the hood, checking the oil level again, and it was still covering the entire dipstick. Now the stealer tells me I need a new engine. Could overfilling the oil cause this???
