Gas mileage

Ok so ive been checking my gas and it seems like ive been blowing through an awful amount of gas. Just got the car a few months ago its 04.
Ive been resetting my trip meter at the pump it seems like i hit about 180 miles and my tank is on E. With a 16 gal tank that means im getting around 11.25mpg when the 8 should be closer to 18 from what i read. Car is stock, minus the new exhaust Also from time to time ill get a red light that kinda looks like the oil coolant light itll stay on for a few seconds or it usually goes out if i shift to a higher gear. Any ideas or possibles fixes i can try?

you never measure fuel usage based on tank size. You measure it based on how much fuel you put in at fill up!

I've had a rx8 for 6 years and i've never ever put in 16 gallons of fuel in it.

15-19 is the typical range. But it depends a great deal on how you drive it, elevation, and road conditions.

the light you are talking about is prolly your radiator coolant, the early models have a problem with the sensor going bad

Yea i was doing some searching around and found that people were having problems with the coolant sensor. I guess ill have to have the mazda dealer check that out there was a TSB about it ive read. Back to the gas mileage tho either way will the filling up of gas technically id be putting even less gas in the tank so my gas mileage would be even lower than what i had said. I drive to work probably 90% highway miles mon-friday i dont typicly drive super spirited when going to work.

I always run to empty and I have never put in more than 14.3 gallons. 15-18MPG is average. For me it's less because I have the sequential turbo setup from the FD.

Greetings, a new member here. I recently bought an 04' GT with 36,000 miles on it. Love the car, but don't love the mileage thus far. Last tank, 150.1 miles with 13.339 gallons of 91 octaine gives me 11.25 mpg (all in the city). Car drives great, with plenty of power, no warning lights, etc.

A sticker dated 11/24/06 has N3Z2-18-881T, indicating a flash update, but possibly not the most current one, as the MSP16 recall was closed out on 6/9/08 according to the Mazda Warranty Vehicle History Report so I assmue the one from 06 is outdated).

I am not sure if the coils and plugs have been replaced (bought used from a dealer), but I figure that's probably a good place to start. I can handle little stuff like that, as I've worked on cars before. From what I gather from this site, this is unlikely to put me in the 17-19 range even if these have not been replaced yet.

Is this anything to be worried about, or is this just how some of these engines are? It certainly is a bit lower than the 17-19 mpg in the city that others here are getting.
Anything else need to be checked out because of this poor mpg?

Thanks in advance for your help.

well my good news is i just got the best gas mileage in my life all highway with a/c on driving on average 65-70mph and i got 25.91 mpg, during that fill up i put in an octane booster just to see what i'll do, i will do it again incase it was a fluke but normally im around 19-22 on the highway.. also a question i looked around but could not find it.. is it safe to use 89 octane.. let me know...
