Can anyone Please please help! Mazda tells me i need a new ENGINE!!! HELP!
I'll try to make it short, what happenned is at first the engine oil light was on, i put 5w-40 oil in. After i put it in the engine wouldn't start, after 3mins it started and ran fine that night. But in the morning the the engine management light was on so i took it to nearest garage, they had the spark plugs changed and the engine oil to 10w-30. At first the computer said number 2 piston misfiring, but later the guy realised the cat was going bright red, meaning too much petrol going in.
Therefore i took it to Mazda garage, i didn't tell them about the engine oil part, and they said my car needed new Cat and Oxygen sensor, i had them changed and everything was alright they said. Went to get the car and drove down the road absolutely fine, stopped at the traffic lights the car stalled, and the engine managment light was on again. Called mazda and they came down the the engine started but was misfiring again and CAT went bright red.
I told mazda abt the engine oil, they said i need a new Engine and they cant do anything about it.
Please if u have heard anything about this or can anyone Advise me of what i should do. Thanks very much.

why in the WORLD would you tell them about the oil?! You are using oil that is NOT recommended in the RX-8 (even if it is a good idea).
Go to a different dealership, tell them you think your cat is clogged and have them inspect.
Also, where are you located?

Hi Henrytrunks.
You need to be more specific as to your car (year, mileage, etc.) and your location, re. Warranty possibilities.
In the above, you used the word 'petrol', so let's assume you are NOT in North America, and your warranty has expired.
First, running the engine on 5W40 oil will not make the engine 'blow up'. Though, I guess you should never admit to doing anything outside the owner's manual....
Secondly, the engines are most normally replaced due to excess carbon mucking up the seals, which lowers compression -- NOT for broken internal parts. This is a good thing.
It's good that you have a new CAT and O2 sensor. If it were me, I'd remove and set aside my new CAT while troubleshooting and repairing - for fear of gumming up the new one.
What is the specific code that the EMS is throwing?
If you're fixing this on your own, I would attack the misfire first... change the plugs, probably want to test and replace the ignition coils as well.
While the plugs are out, a compression check should be done.
Then, if the compression is ok (or at least even), then I would try to decarbon using the Zoom Engine cleaning procedure. There are several threads here (search Zoom Power or, Seafoam).
Here is a revised (01-014/08) TSB article on the cleaning procedure: http://www.finishlineperformance.com...4-08-1924g.pdf
If the compression is wildly off on one rotor, then these engines are indeed usually rebuildable by a good rotary rebuilder, local to you.
The cost is far less than a crate engine from Mazda.
For further information on rebuilding, Look up: atkinsrotary.com (a vendor on this site) for parts and expertise, and http://www.rotaryresurrection.com for expertise. Both AtkinsDan and rotaryresurrection are members on this site.
Good luck - with more info, there are a lot of VERY EXPERIENCED people on this site. (way more than me). They tend not to answer questions that don't contain a ton of background info - to much to chase...

Basically follow what Silver just wrote. I would like to know specifics about what they say is wrong to need the replacement and also why they say they cant do anything about it.

Hi thanks for all your replies, haha yes i am based in London UK, I have done 105000miles in my 2003 rx8. Which i know is quite alot, Mazda just said there is a problem with the engine and that they have ran numerous tests following the Books of Mazda and nothing has come up. That is what they said, i will get it towed away from mazda tomorrow to a regular garage i use and try reving the engine while the sparks plugs are out, as i has asked lots of people and thats one of the ways they taught me.
I am sorry Silver i really am not a mechanic and i dont know what the EMS you mentioned is.
Does anyone know any Good Rotary Engine experts in LONDON.
Thanks again guys
Henry

ask about rotary mechanics in our Europe section ^
but really Mazda needs to give you a better answer than- "its not working but we cant say why."

Hi Henry.
EMS = Engine Management System (or any of the other acronyms for the computer that controls most-everything with our cars). Sorry for being cryptic.
As Zoom quite rightly put it, not just any garage is a good place to take your car - no disrespect to your guy - there aren't a lot of Rotaries / Renesis' around, and what you spend for someone to learn about your car could often be better invested in fixing the problem..
Please lean on your Mazda dealer for photocopies of the Technician's notes on the Repair Order. The tests, and results therof, will greatly assist your mechanic in diagnosing where to start repairs. (and will save you from paying for the same tests again).
I wish you luck with your situation. It is solvable.
EDIT: I should also mention that Mazda does not authorize their dealers to disassemble the Renesis whilst under warranty. Only to replace.... What has resulted from this policy is now that cars are beyond warranty - the Dealers are Clueless about the internal workings (ie: failure modes) of the engine.
