I have read that Mazda says not to use Sythetic Oil. I read on here that most people use Royal Purple Oil for their RX-8's. I was curious which type of royal purple to use.
This link shows a few different types of engine oil. Regular, synthetic, racing oil, ect. I was told by a Napa salesman that Royal Purple only comes in synthetic. I just used castrol GTX, but I want to switch to Royal Purple next oil change. Help me out guys. thanks, tk

I and alot of other people would say SEARCH right about now, but even if you search its split down the middle 50/50 some people say yes its ok, and some avoid it like hell. . .
mazda says non synthetic. protuners say synthetic.
I know people that have used RP for 14000 miles no prob.
i use non synthetic, cause whenever im low on oil, and dont have a spare bottle, happens a lot, its easyer to find the right non-synthetic.

i most likely will switch over to Royal Purple, im just dreading draining the oil coolers!!!!!

synthetc and non syntetic oill will mix just fine. You don't need to drain the oil coolers.

I think the regular RP is just under ten bucks a qt...but the racing one i think is just over ten bucks a qt...what do you guys think? reg or racing?

I must admit I'm a bit of a skeptic.

I had an '85 rx7 that was still running like a champ when I had to unload it at 178k Miles -- Always used Castrol GTX.

Now that I own a fresh - like new '05 rx8 I CAN do the synthetic thing... but I'm torn.

Since the rotary uses oil to help keep it cool --- what type of oil cools down better? Dino , or synth ? or no diff?

generally speaking, synthetic oil will cool better. it does so because it lubricates better, and thus less friction.

More important then oil type is the oil viscosity, thinner oils cool better.

I would have concerns with synthetics that had Molybdenum Disulfide and various other additives can be bad. Royal Purple is suppose to have too much Moly. I also wonder about how good Royal Purple is in the cold.

There is also an issue about mixing different synthetic oils too. Most synthetic oils mixed with dino don't seem to be a problem. But different synthetic oils have different ingredients that might not mix well with another synthetic.

I think the safest synthetic would be Castrol synthetic (5w20 or 5w30? that is another argument). I'm thinking it does not have any bad additives because its even used by Mazda dealers in Japan. Also, Castrol synthetic, may not be a true synthetic. The point about this is an oil can say its synthetic, but not be from Polyalphaolefin (PAO) or Synthetic esters, but just be Hydrocracked. It appears this is what Castrol has done. So they may be selling hydrocracked dino oil that is "called" synthetic and behaves just about as good, but its not PAO (like a true synthetic).

I also use castrol syntec, it's not a true synthetic, so my biggest problem is that they tend to charge true synthetic prices for it when their manufacturing process isn't as costly - and labeling it SYNTHETIC is a disservice to the consumer who now has no idea what he's buying.

You can also import the german syntec, which is real synthetic.


Anyway, I buy it from sams club by the case, works out to about $4 a quart, which is acceptable for me.

Only if you swap in an M3 engine.

Elsewhere on that UK site they recommend one of their 5w30 oils.

Castrol's US site recommends 5w20: GTX, Syntec or Syntec Blend.

No man, As soon as you put Synthetic motor Oil into your engine your car will Explode as soon as you hit the road and kill you on site.

Oh wait .... I JUST did my oil change ......... Royal Purple again .... and my engine is still alive .... hmmm weird ...... Why wouldnt it explode and kill me ? .... dang ....

And F3 is Semi synth, not Full

To OP : Just use whatever you want, it doesnt really matter as long as its good oil

Actually Idemitsu (the rotary safe synthetic!) is the oil that has unusually high levels of moly. It has over 1000 ppm moly.
