Interesting snippets from the Tech Highlights CD

Thought I'd start a thread here to capture interesting points from the RX-8 Technical Highlights CD as I watch it.

Firstly, the PCM (ECU) automatically disengages the A/C compressor for 5 seconds if the throttle opening exceeds 65%

Next, the Renesis is designed for 5W-20 non-synthetic oil.

More as I get to them. Watch this space.

Several of the systems perform a self-check each time the ignotion is turned off. These include the electronically-actuated throttle and the auxilliary port valves. (Why this self-test didn't detect a problem in the pre-production models, is left as an exercise for the reader.)

A small electric pump introduces extra air into the exhaust for approximately 1 minute after a cold start (or until the cat reaches operating temperature) to improve emissions.

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System sensors detect pressure, temperature and speed of each wheel. If an abnormality is detected, the dash light turns on, along with a warning buzzer. Abnormally high pressures can trigger an alert, as well as abnormally low.

The sensors are not interchangeable with aftermarket wheels (?!?), and using aftermarket wheels without sensors will trigger the warning light. WTF?

If the vehicle is equipped with Dynamic Stability Control, the DSC steering angle sensor must be reset whenever the battery is disconnected:

Turn ignition on and note that the DSC light remains on.
Turn the steering wheel to full left lock, then full right lock, and back to center.
Turn the ignition off, then back on, and verify the DSC light goes out.
The HID auto-levelling system uses sensors on the front and rear driver's-side lower control arms. It constantly adjusts the aim to keep the beam level even under hard braking or acceleration.

The tire repair kit includes
 • a valve-stem removal tool
 • a bottle of "special anti-flat sealant"
 • a compressor
It's not just a can of fix-a-flat!

The navigation system uses several onboard sensors in adition to GPS: a gyro in the rear DVD unit, a reverse switch, and vehicle speed data from the DSC control unit. Audio signals from the nav are played through the driver's-side front speaker of the audio system.
