How to install a Cruise control on European RX8

Hi,

I want to install a Mazda Cruise control on my European RX8. It's not standard or option on European Market. I want to buy accessory in US and install it.

Could you help me with part number, diagrams or location to find it or dealer to solve it.

Thanks a lot

P.S. I'm registered on RX8 france club: www.rx8france.com

Not possible.....

Right now, it is not possible, due to the ECU being fairly secure.

Buy the buttons, safety switches, wiring harness etc., but if you cannot tell the ECU "you now have cruise control" you are hooped.

Aftermarket systems are also not going to work....there is no throttle linkage to act on, it's all 'drive-by-wire' electrical.

Thanks StealthTL but may I :
find parameters set on US ECU and apply it on my or
install an US ECU programme with an American CDROM WDS
or find a people with good knowledge of ECU (for example a dealer which have had to uninstall it on US RX8)

on my local club there is more than 20 RX8 users who wants a Cruise Control

contact blueadept he's in the UK and is already wotking on this. he was able to order the buttons. the wiring harness is already there and he has some if not all of the pertinent documents. the last piece of the puzzle involves turning the function "on" in the ecu. thats the hard part. you have to be able to change the "as built" data in the ecu. so far as i can tell the only people that are currently able to do this are mazda service techs. so the question then becomes "how much is it worth to you" and "how much does the service tech like his job?"

I think we discussed this before Charlie.

Getting the "as built data" is only half the problem..you need something similar to a WDS to install it.

yep exactly hence my "how much is it worth to you and how much does the tech like his job" line. right now only mazda service techs would be able to do this. who knows in a year or 2 once one of several companies crack the pcm.

Getting the tech to do it might present still another issue..the as builts are VIN specific..and when they call the euro-tech hotline to get it......it will take some inside information to get this done.

Maybe someone could get their hands on a US pcm and ship it over? Maybe from a totaled car.

Or could it be that simple?

There is no easy solution to your problem unfortunately.

Previous threads are correct, if you 'switch on' the cruise function in the PCM it will work, providing the hardware is there. The problem is that the 'as built' data mentioned cannot be altered, and unfortunately the as-built data for your car has no cruise.

You could install a US PCM, but you would a) probably be breaking the law because the US emissions calibrations, and cruise control itself are different to the spec your vehicle was homologated with, and b) have problems with the MIL coming on, as your car has no EVAP system.

To sum up, I don't recommend trying to install cruise aftermarket. You and as many European RX-8 owners as you can muster should send a letter to MME telling them how much you want cruise control, and maybe we will see results.

Sorry to sound so negative. :-)

WHAT ? THEY HAVE NO EVAP SYSTEM? that hasnt been brought to my attention before. cels would definetly be a problem. i think the emissions would be "ok" as i think the current US cars are already exceeding the next step euro emissions just as the current model euro 8s are.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I think that we will drive without Cruise Control until Mazda Europe decided to offer it or until ECU will be cracked.

Best Regards

Yes, it seem that European car have it too. The difficulty is to use a PCM code with all European equipments and parametters and code for cruise built on Americans models. It is not possible probably because PCM programmes are note made with optionals code parts. We have to waite a new one but not before Mazda offer it on European Market.
