HELP- Rear Bumper damage after hit & run

Ok so this has been an AWFUL weekend. Friday night/ Saturday morning i was the victim of a hit and run. This gave me about an 8 inch wide dent on the rear bumper on the drivers side. So I am asking the forum to help me on what I should do now... I initially have 2 ideas- First being to remove the bumper, bang out as much of the dent as i can then take it to a auto body place and get them to bondo it and paint the bumper. Another idea is to find an inexpensive aftermarket bumper. I would really appreciate any insight or ideas from the forum. I am trying to be as cost conscientious as possible. Oh and i have an insurance deductable of $500.00 so i dont think that will help much. I will try to post pics later today. I really appreciate any help and ideas.--Cole

That bumper is trashed, no amount of bondo can help that because it definately stretched around the edges of the dent. So you're in the market for a new bumper. I don't know what your tastes are so I'm not going to give many suggestions but if you're looking for a cheap fix I'd say get a used stocker or a knockoff MS. Also, post this in the exterior appearance section and you should see many more replies.

You don't need a new bumper, that should pop right out. It won't look new but you want to be cost consious right? My suggestion would be get a hammer bang it till it pops then don't mess with it any more cuz if you hit it too far out it wont matter how much bondo you put on it you'll have a bump.

After you get that nasty lookin dent out just take it to a body shop and till 'em to repaint your bumper.

Hope you got the plates on the car that hit you, by the way how did they get away?? your in an rx8 no way they could out run you!

I've have a similar experience ... hit and run while I was parked. I took the rear bumper off and attempted the pop out of the dent. Not much sucess (mine had a beautiful crack as well). Repair will be more headache than what it's worth.

To me the plastic shroud is damaged as well, so my suggestion is to just get a replacement bumper. Try looking in the for sale section ... I've seen a couple of the forum guys selling their stock rear bumpers for cheap (100 bones or so).

i wasnt in the car- i was in the bar. today i took the bumper off and knocked out most of the dent. I am going to take it to a auto body place tomorrow and see what they say. If they cant do it or it costs too much then i will go get a new one. The Mazda dealership will sell me a brand new one painted for $450.00. Even for 100.00 used one i will still have to pay for the shipping which will be round 125.00 then plus 200.00 for paining which will leave me at 425.00 for a used one and hoping it doesnt get damaged in the mail. i think it makes sence to me

This post is around 8 years old lol. But my situation is almost a mirror image of yours. What dealership was this and do they still offer for the same price?

As you noted this was 8 years ago. If nothing else I'm sure inflation has played a small role in the price of that bumper, paint and other material. Your best bet is to simply call the local Mazda dealerships in your area and ask.
