ECU Swap, 200 posts later...

Easy questions:

if I put the wrong ECU in a car, (correct model, but not programmed for that car), what happens? Is it:

a car immediately explodes
b all electronics render themselves inert
c the immobilizer light come on and the car will not start

If, after that, I replace the original ECU, what happens? Is it:

a the car immediately explodes
b everything goes back to working fine

I had 2, cloned, ECU's for the car. One I knew had a hard 610 issue, and one that was re-re-re programmed from old car. It has a temp sensitive 610 error. While getting a key made, I had the MSP16 flash done. There was a chance that their re-flash would clear up the 610, and it was open on the car. On the drive home it occurred to me that I may no longer have cloned ECU's and I need a way to test that. The only way I can think to test is to swap the two and see if the car starts. Hence, the first set of questions.

I am kind of thinking that the answer is along the lines of "no issues", or the dealer would fry a lot of cars. Just want to be sure.

Advice appreciated?

I imagine that the ECU reports its identity and that it check other modules' identities. So long as the ECU's identity is the same and other modules' identities are the same, I don't see why it wouldn't keep working.

Thanks,

That seems to be what happened. What I am interested in is what happens if they do not check out. I may just give it a shot on my parts car and see what happens. I am ECU rich at this time.

Thanks,

you will get some sort of Can-Bus code, but those never cause a CEL, but u will see it with a code reader

if it's immobilzer code then u get a CEL and car will not start

Copy,

Turns out that data did not get changed that would be an issue, both ECU's still work.

Thanks. When this is over, I may intentionally throw the wrong ECU in the old one just to see what happens...
