Black on Tailpipe

Today I was washing my rx-8 and I noticed a lot of black soot on the inside of the talepipes. I have 1400 miles on on my car, this seems like a lot for the milage on the car.

Has anyone else noticed this problem?

Please Reply,

I think most owners have this "problem," causing it to be normal. I'm not sure on the cause though.

The cause is the extra fuel dumped into to motor to extend the life of the CAT. AKA running rich. This is normal and we all have to deal with this issue. Keep some paper towels or a rag around and give it a quick wipe in the morning. Much easier to clean every two days than every two weeks.

It's carbon build up. Our cars run rich from the factory.

this is relatively normal :D...and yes the richness accelerates the problem but there is another factor...which oil u use

I find using Castrol GTX gives me much more time before I need to clean the tailpipes...I also find the car runs a bit smoother especially at idle...after going for an oil change it would get rougher and the soot would build up almost instantly...they use Penzoil I believe or is it Mobile? oh whatever

so now I bring my own oil and they use it during the oil change...much better :D and I'm much happier

Here's a heads up...to reduce the carbon in the tips, completely remove the excess soot, clean and dry, then apply a small amount of Zaino Z2 a few inches around the inside of the tips. This will considerably reduce further build up. Do this every couple of weeks and you'll hardly notice the carbon anymore

ummm...have u actually tried this?

the zaino will burn off in a matter of minutes...I can't imagine the smell is great and you'll have much bigger problems cleaning

Yeah, I do this every other wash or so...it worked when I had the stock exhaust and works even better on my Legamax (bigger tips). There's no smell and the Zaino doesn't completely burn off since even after a week I still see some of the white residue if I didn't completely buff it away during the application.

i just put a little gas on a rag and wipe it clean, then with a paper town buff it to a nice golden shine (stock exhaust).

I like the look of the black carbon on the tips....like a house with crap lying around, it looks used and lived in.

:D haha....ya think? Unless you're like KYLiquid who actually likes the carbon for the "lived in" look, try the Zaino treatment inside the tips....zero soot.
