Question Mazdaspeed ECU?

I was checking out the new blue color RX-8 from Mazdaspeed as mentioned in this thread

New blue color RX-8

If you follow the link to the Mazdaspeed site, one of the performance features listed is an "Exclusive control unit (PCM)". This sounds like Mazdaspeed has a special ECU designed for performance.

Anyone else find this interesting?

BTW, that dark blue is killer!

The babel fish translation is as follows...

Babel Fish Translation

In English:

Furthermore it improves the preponderant extension kind of impression RX-8 loading the sport DNA "of RENESIS specialize" to make, continuing to turn to everywhere to a greater extent. In order to achieve this theme, with RX-8 Matsuda speed version, the lightweight flywheel, exclusive use PCM and the private sport muffler were designated as the nucleus, height of those efficiencies prejudice of minute private チューン was pulled out in the base. Attendant upon the light weight conversion of the flywheel, balance adjustment around the eccentric shaft which is the output axis is done in every engine 1. PCM is optimized on the basis of the resistance decrease of the inhalation and exhalation of air by the private sport muffler and the like. Such technique was repeated, it was not the numerical value, output rise, degree of completion and the balance where only the complete model is high were acquired. The sharp response, you taste the power impression of extending to the top end, and the rotary sound where the chest is less crowded, with senses and want exhausting.

While the chrome molybdenum steel which is the expensive material starting shaving, by manufacturing method, strength guaranteeing actualizing light weight conversion. Vis-a-vis 7.7kg of normal, it lightens to 7.35kg. Inertia (inertial forces) from 1.09 you have improved largely in 0.77. As to handle the nimble accelerator response is pulled out easily, low there are no times when rotary unevenness when travelling and idling in the rotary limits is caused, the engine response have improved.

In the based car one is set by increasing the oil cooler which even in the right side on the left side, the heat dissipation quantity substantially rise. The effect is shown under unfavorable conditions of circuit travelling and the like.

Diameter of middle pipe from 60.5 in 65 modification The catalyser - (the catalyst) while contributing to output improvement by the fact that it modifies in Matsuda speed version private ones exhaust pressure in the high rotary limits approximately 45% was decreased.

The private sport muffler & the catalyser - with, by the fact that room of the temperature which it occurs by the fact that it decreases exhaust temperature is used, it became possible to select the air/fuel expense which is optimum to put out power. Attendant upon this, the data of PCM is modified, furthermore torque rise is actualized with the inhalation pulsation effect due to the fresh air duct.

Due to the adoption of the private fresh air duct, pressure fluctuation (resonance) occurring on the inhalation inside of pipe, making use of the inertia which it tries that inhalation efficiency as it improves, the mixture of the inhalation inside of pipe will continue to flow by raising the internal pressure, it actualizes the improvement of charging efficiency. Leading side heat range is designated as 8E from 7E, room of the プレイグニッション limit is guaranteed. The ground line is increased, the function which loses the potential dirrerence of body engine パッテリー is done.

Sounds like Mazdaspeed did a CAI, reprogrammed the ECU, put a higher flow exhaust on and possibly replaced the cat with a high flow version. Hard to tell for sure tho.

Quoth the fish (thanks Kev):

So they have optimized the A/F ratios for power, just like Canzoomer's device is doing. They apparently have tuned it with a high flow cat and catback. That's what a lot of folks in the Tech Garage thread are looking for, a complete package designed to work together. Has anyone seen what the power claims are for this setup?

What does the change of plugs from 7E to 8E mean? Is that a cooler or hotter plug? Does that mean that the combustion chamber temps are higher, possibly due to a leaner burn? This is all speculation, if anyone has an informed opinion, please post it.

I wonder if it is a physically different ECU or just the air/fuel maps. If it is just the maps, then everyone should be shouting "I want the JDM Mazdaspeed ECU maps" rather than the JDM maps. I guess even our Far East friends with the JDM map will want the Mazdaspeed maps.

This looks very interesting. If anyone has any more info on this, I'd love to hear about it.

Jap plugs, higher number means cooler

Domestic plugs, higher number means hotter.

**all typically.

Don't forget the lightweight flywheel!

That should be one of my next mods after suspension.

Good info Syntrix, thanks.

OK, so they're running cooler plugs. Please educate me. Does that they're worried about predetonation or just that they expect the engine to be running at high rpms and thus high combustion chamber temps? Doesn't leaning the A/F ratio result in higher temps also? So, is the cooler plug a sign that they are leaning the fuel mix out for more power?

I just realized this title.

No mazdaspeed power upgrades for the USDM model (ie, NO Mazdaspeed ECU). All according to Mazdaspeed booth reps at SEMA Yesterday.

He did say that all parts would be avail to make the current RX8 look like the MS version.

The rep could not comment on the JDM version specifics.

Guys,

They aren't going to do anything to change the ECU in the states. EPA demands the car run rich on WOT to preserve the cat and that is the way it is going to be.

They will do exhaust, intake (maybe), and mechanical (flywheel, suspension, etc.) but they are not going to touch the fuel maps.

EPA is more along the lines of 7/70k Emissions warranty.

Now if all our cats started to fail at 60k, Mazda would fire a few enineers, as they would have to recall everyone's cat.

That's OK, there are other avenues for power mods. As for the aero stuff...any idea how much cheaper it will be to get from Mazdaspeed USA as compared to buying it now from the folks currently shipping it from Japan? I would guess it would be significantly cheaper...at least it should be!
