1. USA models will start building in mid-march, so why would they release it in june? it doesnt take that long to build a rx8 does it? they wont build it and let it sit there for 2 months rite? which can only mean its coming earlier then june. hopefully april

2. for japan, delivery starts april. so why would it take so much longer for cars to arrive in us?

anyways im still hoping for a earlier delivery

I have a feeling Mazda Mktg. is timing the arrival of the 8 with X2. I have a feeling they are going to realease it around the time the movie is released.

April Japan showroom, June here?

If they are starting production of Japan market cars now and they'll show up in showrooms there in April, it seems to follow that given an extra month for transportation across the ocean(s) that we will see them in June. First, they only have to transport to show rooms in a country probably smaller than California. Then they have to get enough built to make it worthwhile for a ship to move them here; and they want to get that all-important first allocation to all of the dealers here roughly at the same time so that's quite a few copies of the car. They could get here yet in May - but it's still reasonable to respect the June-August window!

No, it'll take quite a bit longer than a week to get them across the ocean. From what I can tell from trade magazines, a month is about standard if they're coming from Japan. Don't forget, these are going to be on some kind of barge/transport-type thing, and they move slower than almost anything else on the water.

Tans Pacific Shipping

Did a search and tried to find the shipping company used by Mazda. Couldn't locate it, but did find a schedule for another comapny that ships Mitsubushi. Here are the time lines for two shipments, one from Japan to the west coast and another to the east coast. Dates are the days the ships depart each city in Japan and arrive at each city in Norh America.

March 10 - Chofu, Japan
March 12 - Kobe, Japan
March 15 - Yokohama, Japan
March 30 - Long Beach CA
April 5 - Tacoma WA
April 6 - Vancouver BC

March 25 - Kobe, Japan
March 28 Nagoya, Japan
March 29 - Yokohama, Japan
April 2 - Kanazawa, Japan
May 4 - Savannah, GA
May 8 - Philadelphia, PA

Also, during my search, found out the new Huyandi shipping service car carrier can haul 6000 cars at a time. Follow this link for a 5 minute movie about it and their fleet of 72 vessels if you are interested.

shipping times

So it looks like a 6 week window is reasonable for those of us served by an eastern port and maybe 3 weeks for those on the west coast - which I think still gives a late May - early June window. In the Mazda press release on yesterday's production startup it seemed to almost imply that they were completing cars yesterday - but I think the red RX-8 shown was a hand built unit and those starting production will at the earliest roll off the assembly line after complete testing in about two weeks - anyone care to confirm or agree with that?

Did you get your RX uncovered today? I'm heading home now to try to find my Subaru XT6!
