What is up w/ the salvage/rebuilt titles??

When I was shopping for an rx8, I noticed that quite a large number of the ones I found had a rebuilt title, or worse, a salvage title.
It could possibly be that I had more interest in "getting the best deal" & a lot that I looked at were only good deals because of the title situation.
But gosh, there were so many.
I know that just because a vehicle has a rebuilt title doesn't mean that it isn't a good car, but I was not interested in purchasing those.

Why is it so easy for an insurance co to total these out?

My opinion-
The RX8 has a terrible re-sale value. Because of this, there are many young people with the means to purchase the car. These young owners don't have much (if any) experience with driving a sports car. Said 'youngins' crash vehicle.
Do the math...

There are no laws in place to prevent it and the insurance companys want to recoup (their losses), as much as possible.

It's not just an RX8, it is all cars. I was recently helping a friend shop for an Audi, there was a huge number of salvage title cars out there. Looking at the low end of the market also makes a difference, it's inevitable that many of the "great deals" will have salvage titles.

Yea there are A LOT of cars out there with salvage titles. Naive people think they are getting the best deal in the world not knowing what a salvage title means. It's too late once they figure it out.

well, I just didn't come across this many when I was shopping for my mazda3, so I just found it odd that so many of the rx8's I looked at were salvage/rebuilt.
I understand the "young drivers" point, but gosh it was just a lot. I was beginning to think that it was rare to find one that had not been totaled. I even considered purchasing a rebuilt one, but I just didn't want to trust the limited info that I (& most people) only have access to. (like a carfax and the seller's word)
& I wasn't willing to pay extra for an appraiser to come out and blah blah blah - it just wasn't worth it.
& I work with people buying/selling cars everyday, and never did I help anyone shop for a vehicle & come up with so many bummer titles. Usually you find a few, though.

One thing I know is that you will almost never find a rebuilt title on a well-known dealer lot. The dinky buy here/pay here places, yes; but the big names don't have them. But, then you pay more of course at the larger dealers.

its not bad for 2,200. The rims could fetch that much, most of the body panels are in decent shape. If anyone here picks it up ill buy the tail lights off you(pending on the electrical situation lol). it has foglights and i know of atleast 3 or 4 users always stalking the 09-11 guys for their foglights. Not to mention the sideskirts that are a alternative to the mazdaspeed, and rear spoiler someone might want for a BB s1. The headlights look okay pending the electrical. i wouldnt take anything in the interior or engine bay though.

IMHO, we RX-8 owners are happy with our cars, and usually don't want to sell them. So a large percentage of the ones that do get into the market are the result of signficant wrecks. Unlike, say, BMWs where owners dump them as soon as their lease or the warranty is up.

Agreed, When I was on the market for a WRX STI there was absolutely nothing that wasn't brand new. Once people go out and buy something like our cars they tend to hold onto them pretty tight.

Sorry everyone, I didn't mean to sound so coldhearted. It is sad if that person was involved in an accident that was not their fault.

It's just that I took a law enforcment class a while ago and they showed us a lot of crashes where the driver was under the influence. Most of the cars looked like that.

...and everytime I see a mangled vehicle like that it tends to be related to someone doing something incredibly stupid.

So if that person did die from being under the influence, I am not sorry.

I hear you. I do not have much sympathy for people who drive under the influence.

I have seen worst, FAR worst than what EricB posted, in PERSON. It's amazing, trust me.

I saw one with no top ... I was like waaatttt is it like some sort of special Mazdaspeed 1337 8 ? the top is "gone" , the rest of the body? meh, trash? I'm 99% sure the driver was killed in that 8.

but like i said before, just because it saids salvage it does NOT mean it's bad. you just need to know what you're doing.

hahaha

Now that I looked at the pic again, it's amazing to see the front wheel still in good shape considering everything else around is destroyed

If I had $2,000 lying around, I'd probably check out that R3.
There's a lot of reusable parts on there. Not including the front of course.
Mostly the wheels, lights, skirts...
Doubt the front seats are okay though.

Front damage usually means the guy ran into something. it's RARE that someone hit you can break the front of your car like that (it does happen, but just RARE)

So I would say 90% chance this guy hit something, judging from the picture, the middle part of the car goes "deeper" into the engine bay than both sides, I would have to assume he hit a tree or light pole. but it also seems like he ran into a 18 wheeler, consider how bad the roof of the car is.

Well he/she might be a careless driver (or just **** luck), let's just hope this guy(or a gal?) is still alive.
