Make sure warranty work is completed and service was kept up. Run a Carfax report. There is also another detailed report system that someone can chime in on. Inspect the car top to bottome for blemishes, damage. Of course drive the car to listen for any weird noises and to feel the engine and tranny.
Check the used RX8 section here. I've seen great deals here that will be much better than what you'd get from a dealer. And for the most part people who are selling their cars here knew how to take care of them.
I don't know how true it is, but the top gear website says to watch for sticking second stage breathing actuators, it says that if they are sticking the car won't accelerate hard at over 6000 rpms.
check the tires to see how worn they are and what brand and model they are. the stock bridgestone potenzas can give you leverage since they're worthless in the snow and mediocre at best in the rain, depends on where you live.
you should also talk to the dealer the owner bought it from to see if it's ever flooded, and if it has it should have the new starter and battery, but then again I'd say that increases the car's worth. Mods detract from the worth unless they're cosmetic AND you like them
