Ok, maybe you guys think that was crazy, no? But if you think about it it makes perfect sense. For example, clear corners are "stock" everywhere but the US, right?! Some go way out of their way, time and financial wise, to get the car back to the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) specs which is "stock" in Japan. I think, people change their components just to be "different" form their locale. That is, in Japan, JDM is not a big thing because its STOCK there. I'm sure somewhere, amber corners are all the craze.
Furthermore, most of the parts that are being replaced are not only funcitonal, but optimal for the car's overall "health." When you add HP you are inadvertantly taking "something" away somewhere else--reliability, longevity, economy, etc.
So in a weird way, if cars did come "stock" with a high flo exhaust/intake, lowering springs, body kit, etc. Those "tuners" who love to tinker (I used to be one) would find ways to alter the car for other purposes. Just like the first person to look at an econobox and say..."I can hit 13s with this thing." There are stock cars out there that do 13s, but there is something inside the innovator to take a commuter car and turn it into a race car--my logic is the opposite.

wow this is my favorite thread!
yea, phantom menace, i thought you were way out there at first, and i was actually laughing while reading this. but then you came back with a really interesting point of view.
that implies that others are welcome to post more "Things that Make you go "Hmmmm...."
who is next?

...I'm SOOO Off Topic
Dude,....... I swear to god, but Ive thought that too!!
no joke.
its funny cuz even my dad once told me that a while back.
He told me, "Why do you want black Rims? If the car came with black rims from the factory, you would want to change them to the ones you have now!"
its such a trip cuz its so true.
and it IS only because we want to be diffrent than the group.
we want to have something that makes us, "US"
thats why people in the "Rice" scene are so into adding random funky things to their car because that makes them, THEM.
if you find a True Riced out car (A True One), you probably wont find another thats Just like it for that same reason. They have custom work, custom decals so on.
I useto be a "ricer" and I loved it.
but im "sleeper" now, haha. anyway, the man has a great point! thanks for the thread.

About the JDM thing, in japan they put on orange corners. Its a desireable item considering clear corners are OE in japan. They go for the USDM look.

Secondly, yes. Rims did/do come stock in black. Then people started putting hub cabs on them. Look at a stock civic, for example, the have black steel rims. They are light, plain, & cheap. They should be ideal for racing. But people put larger, heavier rims on. This has multiple ramifications, for example:
1) Larger rims make speedo readings inaccurate
2) The excess weight/rotating mass takes away from acceleration, handling, etc.
So by staying "Stock" you maybe unique, no? Okay, now that my point is made and people don't think I'm on crack--lets get some more deep HMMMMM's going?
Thanks Romeo for being open-minded enough to read and relate to my post...

But the thing is...they're putting--basically--the same components (e.g. intake, exhaust, larger rims, video equipment, etc.) Thought the make and sepcific styles may not be the same, they are following a "pattern," Stage 1: intake & exhaust, State 2: Full exhaust sytem & ignition timing, pulleys, etc.
