The FC came in a vert flavor. It was far more popular in Japan than it was here in the US (the turbo FC came in the JP vert as an option, vs the NA here). Since then, nothing.

Just 1. It was used in some parade in Japan. I expect Mazda still retains ownership of it, if it still exists.

Even looks like it was an AT.

Interesting. Given that Mitsubishi has produced the Eclipse as a convertible (with the more powerful spider version), I am surprised that Mazda did not produce this for the U.S market.

Not really. The roof is an integral part of any coupe's rigidity. Convertibles tend to be heavier because of the added reinforcements that have to be done. The RX-8 is already too heavy for the Renesis, so this is going even further in the wrong direction. Add to that, part of the original marketing for the RX-8 was it's Triple H structure, making it incredible rigid and very safe, despite already not having a b pillar (Thanks to the suicide doors). That roll bar in the picture is probably there just trying to keep the car from literally falling apart in the middle. Open your 8's doors on both sides and stand a bit off where you can see through the car. Imagine what is holding your 8 together if the roof was gone.

No, a convertible 8 was never a real production option. It would have been insanely too heavy for the engine by the time it was rigid enough in just the floor to pass crash safety standards. It probably would have also lost all access to the rear seats in the process as well.
