tap into navigation screen
hi, i am installing a carputer. i dont want to install a new screen and want to use the one for the gps. has anyone successfully tapped into the screen from the dvd player RGB wires?.
my idea is buy a vga to rgb cable that goes from the computer to the wiring. and have some kind of switch to toggle between the navi and the computer.
any ideas? thanks

Not sure if anyone sells a premade VGA to RGB cable. However, if there was such a thing, it probably still wouldn't work. The Navi display requires RGBS, or RGB plus composite sync. An RGBS signal can be generated from a VGA signal through a converter of some sort.

well you are correct. i have orderd the cable for cheap off of ebay. and i have spoken to some guy on this forum who actually accomplished this, what i know so far is it has to be wired in a specific way, its called sync on green. inother words the sync cable uses the signal from green for the hsync and vsync. as soon as i get the cable in the mail i will try all the possible combinations. he said he got it to work, i dont know how well but im sure theres a way. ill keep you posted though..
beats spending $500.. worth a try anywayz

There is a converter box that will let you tap into the nav display. i think david navone sells them. for a carPC though, you're better off doing what Alz0r did and replace the entire display with a touchscreen.

ye ikno theres a few ways...
-easyest most expensive is buy the touchscreen the pannel the avswitcher and hook up the carpc- $1000+
- 2nd easyest way still expensive is buy the avswitcher and use the stock screen- $500
-3ed hardest way (obv my way) is tap into regular screen with the cable that costs $5.. in theory it works. its getting it to work thats hard.
hopefully it works.. not that im cheap i just dont want to tear up the car and empty my wallet.. lol
