Spoilers on a street car are just for looks, most look dumb, and add-on ones look dumber. (And yeah, I have one; it comes with the GT).

^it doesn't come with the GT - that was an option.

i personally prefer either a lip spoiler or the MS version. i don't like the OEM at all and the big park benches are just ridiculous.

For me, the Mazdaspeed spoiler was the only way to go. I track the car so I adjusted it for the track. If I dont adjust it back the MPG drops by about 10%. So it must be doing something. Keep in mind that unless you are going about 80MPH+ the spoiler wont make much difference on downforce.

I love the little spoiler on my 09 GT. It's just perfect.

I stand corrected! Agreed too, that if you gotta have one, make it subtle.

Yep, track is a different story. Even there, increased downforce on the rear has to be matched by increased downforce on the nose which is hard to do without going to lower front lips which will get torn up with street use. Also, that downforce comes at the price of higher drag. The more subtle "spoilers" are usually not creating downforce, but are being used to kill lift. After all, the flat bottom and curved top of a car is the same basic shape of an airplane wing.

And that why I have the whole mazda speed kit, rear underpanel, sideskirts and front bumper. The front bumper/splitter is about 4.5" off the ground but I have no problems on the street.

Looks good on the street too

No spoiler for me, I don't like them. I think the car looks cleaner and sleeker without it. The lip spoiler looks nice though.

I like the oem spoiler, to me 8's that don't have one look like the owner was trying to save too much $$. There is another 8 in town, same color as mine, with a much bigger spoiler. Looks "funny".

I disagree, spoilerless keeps the cars lines and the trunks "roundness". I removed the spoiler from my FD back in the day and did the same with my 8. I'd rather go the lowered with bumper lip look and clean top.
Some spoilers fill the look for more aggresive bodykits and are a good compliment.
I prefer none though.

Spoilerless. The 8 is so clean without it. There are some decent aftermarket spoilers though. The MS looks great. R-magic, RE Amemiya, Knight Sport, and AutoExe make really nice spoilers as well.

I guess it's a matter of preference. Personally I think the RX-8 looks a lot better without, but I don't like the look of spoilers on many street cars.

it's for looks only. the added weight will give you less acceleration and mileage, actually.

you could get a carbon fiber trunklid with a lip or a spoiler even, if you are looking to spend money. but then you would want a hood to match haha

Before and after, decide for yourself what look you like. Keep in mind that the full mazdaspeed kit that I have will cost you some $$$$. If you go cheep it will look cheep and cost more in the long run.

I wouldnt do the mazdaspeed spoiler without some other aero pieces, it just looks funny by itself.

The OE spoiler does not weigh enough to impact MPG

That is true, but its weight will decrease acceleration performance. Also, its aero drag will affect MPG.
The point is a spoiler won't make your car go faster - unless you're cornering at serious speeds, which is very difficult to do except on a track..
