smell of oil when sitting still and after backing up

Hey guys I am new here, and just got my 8 last tuesday.I have owned a few rotaries over the years but never new ones.I know about the oil injection system, but I have noticed a faint smell of oil when sitting at stop lights and such. Also afetr I back it into the driveway I notice it more.Is this a normal thing?Should I be worried? The car has around 500 miles on it now,and I have only burned through 2 tanks.I have yet to check the oil, but I will tommorow when I fill up for the second time.Oh yeah where is the best place to get the recommended oil?I have always used havoline in my RX-7 and REPU but I know nothing about the oil for the 8.Thanks in advance.

It will get less noticeable after time. When mine was new (now over a year ago) I had the same smell. It went away shortly thereafter.

it is most likely the oily residue burning off the stainless steel exhaust. that goes awy. however you should keep an eye on the oil level and the area under the car in case you have some leak.

This was my experience with that smell... My car had a burning oil smell when I came to a stop light (or waited in a drive-thru). It was a month or so old (now 6). I took it into the dealer when I actually saw smoke coming from under the car in front of the headlamp beam (it was night). Turns out the rear tranny seal leaked and dripped gear oil onto the exhaust pipe sending smoke under the car and odor everywhere. Dealer fixed it, but happened again a month later - dealer fixed again (said seal may have been installed wrong) and I haven't smelled burned oil since. My car was built in Sept 2003. ...Maybe just a fluke.

Yes this is my first post. ...Not a troll, but lurked a while.

I had the smell when the car was new and it went away after a few weeks of driving.

I had a similar smell after installing my Racing Beat cat-back exhaust system and it too went away after a few days.

The smell of my leather seats went away too ....... I want that back .

I'm having identical issue that mazdax605 is seeing

I just picked up my 8 (6sp, winning blue, base w/appearance) monday and have the identical issue that mazdax605 is having. Sounds like it will go away (hopefully). Had a '93 Probe GT that leaked oil from the rocker covers then burned off on exhaust manifold. This odor is reminiscent of that problem. Will check for oil under car just in case.
