White Sport purchased last November.
~8500 miles
18-22 mpg
Uses about a quart of oil every 3k miles... still on 5W20
As far as tranny problems... It had a little burr in 6th gear at about 2k miles. The dealer replaced the 5th and 6th syncro's with upgraded ones from Mazda (carbon fiber). The tranny's been buttery smooth since then.
She's been trouble free outside of that.

Most of the Tranny failures have been owner related...ie, they don't know how to use a stick.
And there actually have not been that many....
As I have said and I will say it again, these trannys take a while to wear in, mine is an original and beautiful.
You can also see what I said previously that 09's are actually using less oil than series 1's.
It is better targeted (used).
You will use more oil in winter as Cold temps the PCM and EMOP's dribble oil in after engine turn off....Hotter weather it does not do this.
I have started to top off oil in the mornings on a cold engine, so, when FULL the oil level should be about a quarter of an inch (5 mm) from the F DOT mark.
Many guys are putting too much oil in..

BTW, The Tranny Upgrade in early 09's is Not a Carbon Fiber Gear or Synchro, it is a carbon 'Coated' one, which wears off after a few thousand miles...when the tranny has worn in..

2300 Miles, no oil change yet. Plan on first one this weekend. Mazda recommended waiting 60 days or 3000 miles to allow break in oil before changing myself. Going to do it as 60 days is a little past.

2450 miles just change oil rp 5w-30 keep oil 5mm from full mark cold engine
premix AMSOIL pro
tranny smooth as butter

I think the average on 09's is about 1 Quart (1 litre, just under) per 3,000 Miles or 5,000 Kms
of Engine Oil use is about right.
Like all rotaries a lot depends on Use, Load, RPM and now Weather temperature (09's only).
Even how many times you stop/start your S2 8 in Cold Weather.
If you are a High revver ALL the time, you will use more oil.
When it comes to oil changing I like the idea of a double change or flush to get 96% of all the old oil out..
That is a Hot/Warm Drain, Fill, Start Car for about 5 minutes, drain and refill.

I put 72000km on my 04 i bought it used (poor car needed a better home ) my oil consumption is minimal it drives still like brand new. What a wonderful car .

LOL... I've only been driving a stick for better than 30 years... maybe I'll get the hang of it one day.
As far as carbon fiber vs carbon coated... no clue; I didn't hold them... I'm just relaying what the mechanic said. I also got the impression from him that the synchro's on 5th and 6th gear were different than the others originally and that Mazda changed them to what he was putting in my tranny early in the model year.
The dealer did an excellent job on the car. I mentioned that there was a burr on 6th gear when I took it in for the 3k mile oil change. It was still totally driveable and certainly not an issue at all. They contacted Mazda and received the two new synchro's from Japan. Very clean work on the repair/upgrade. And all completed in four days! :D In on Monday and out on Thursday!
No issues at all with the tranny since then... even with my driving!

Just hit 11,000 miles
I use the Gas Cubby app on my iphone to keep track of mileage.
Total Average so far is 18.9mpg with a range of 14 and 22.
Did oil changes at the dealer 5K and 10K
Put in about half a quart of oil every 3rd fill u or so. It's been sort of random as far as when its looked like it needs oil.
Had the MIAC problem which was fixed by the dealer. Some sort of coolant restrictor was needed.
Other than that, no problems at all.

I have been surprised at how little oil I've had to add to my RX-8. After reading all of the magazine reviews, customer reviews, etc., over the years before owning one, I was expecting to have to carry abound oil in the trunk and be adding oil all the time. My RX-8 is my recreational vehicle, and as such, gets run to 9,000 RPM fairly often, and I still don't add much oil. I stopped carrying oil in the trunk just a couple of months after buying the car. If I were to take the car on a long trip, I would make sure to have a quart or two in the trunk, but for normal fun driving around my area, there's no reason to bother.
On a related note, how important is it for the engine to still be hot when you check the oil level? I find myself forgetting to check it after driving it home after filling up with gas (and waiting 5 minutes, like the manual says to do). I would like to be able to run out to the garage and check it when the car has been sitting for days and I think to check the oil level.

Todays transmissions are in some cases even smaller than what they were 30 years ago and have an extra gear or two inside. With shorter gates, closer ratio's everything is and has to be packed in Very tight and close.
Checking engine oil on a stone cold motor...level car.....don't forget that oil expands when hot, so when cold your oil levels will read lower, in 09's it is about 4-5 mm below the F hole on dip stick when stone cold.
Don't overfill.
And yes IMO taking engine oil with you is unnecessary, particularly Series II, they use less oil not more.

I had the same problem, and the same fix. Except mine took two different dealerships and an argument to get fixed! Now it leaks fluid onto the cat and has been "fixed" twice. I'm calling MNAO next...
