Recall: Passanger Airbag malfunction
I was at the dealer today getting an oil change and looked over the service guy's desk. He had an internal memo from Mazda mentioning a recall for the passanger Airbags. I asked him what it was and he told me that he did not have the details yet. Does anyone in this forum knows what this recall is all about.

I was in a dealership today having my ECU flashed, I came home tonight to post the findings on what was found, and discovered that there was a new posting in the TSB thread about another recall, here: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...594#post253594 No mention of ANY recall from the dealership. Not even this one on the transmission.

I started to get an SRS warning a couple of days ago and have an appointment later this week at the dealer. I'm assuming a airbag problem but it could be the pretensioners. I'm going to ask my dealer to see if any stored codes may relate to my lackluster heater or my below average mpg.

Just checked with my local dealer's service writer, and he hadn't heard of either the airbag wiring harness OR the transmission heat shield issues. At least he was open to hearing about it and didn't make "you're just a consumer, what do you know" noises.
Once again, the RX8 community knows more than the dealership personnel - by a long shot!

This is to notify you of a recall and STOP DELIVERY on the 2004 MPV and 2004 RX-8. This recall and stop delivery notification is for dealer inventory vehicles. This message provides dealers with detailed parts information, warranty claim processing information, and repair procedures.
Beginning today, February 16, 2004, all 2004 MPV and 2004 RX-8 models in dealer inventory must be inspected and repaired (if necessary) prior to customer delivery.
Selling or leasing subject vehicles without performing the necessary inspection and/or repair is prohibited by law. Failure to perform applicable recalls before delivery can result in extensive dealer fines from the Federal Government. Once 2004 MPV and 2004 RX-8 models have been inspected and repaired (if necessary), customer delivery may begin.
Mazda Motor Corporation has decided that 2004 MPV vehicles produced from August 20, 2003 through February 4, 2004 fail to conform to requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, Occupant Crash Protection. Also, Mazda Motor Corporation has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2004 RX-8 vehicles produced from April 10, 2003 through January 28, 2004.
Certain 2004 MPV and 2004 RX-8 vehicles were produced with improperly wired front passenger-side airbags. The result of this problem is that the airbag will not provide adequate protection in the event of a crash. Mazda has decided to conduct a recall campaign to correct the wiring by installing a new wiring harness in the front passenger-side airbag system on all affected vehicles.
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by first class mail beginning February 27, 2004.

My check engine light came on today. 13.9k on the car. Mazda says it is code 2128 "throttle position sensor" and it is one they haven't seen yet , according to the mechanic. They also told me about 2 new recalls for the RX-8. The passenger side air bag (they are adding a clip to keep it from prematurely opening) and they are enlarging the heat shield above the transmission (to lower the heat we feel coming into the passenger cabin).

I went to my dealer today, the tech was able to pull both the AirBag and Transmission Dynamic Damper issues out of his computer. Since they were in the system he said he would be able to order the necessary parts and would call me when they came in. I also showed him the "Warm Cup-Holder issue" and told him to order that part since they already have to disassemble the center channel to get to the tranny.

We have already done some stock units (i work at a dealership). it is kind of simple, the tech here as figured out how to do it without removing anything from the inside of the vehicle.(thats why iit is good we did the stock units first! ) most dealers now have the info on both recalls but will not have the parts until the end of Feb. or first week of March. Best advise right now is if you want to call the dealer just make an appointment for sometime in March at your convenience. do not expect anything to be done in Feb. this is for both recalls. hope this helps!

If you own an rx8 you should get an e-mail from Mazda to register on their USA MY Mazda web site. There you can find out what recalls are in effect for your Vin #. Mine has a recall 2/29/04 for the passenger airbag and dynamic damper which apparently is a sheild over the transmission. I'm sure it will take some time to get the parts from Japan and dealers also have to do this recall on all rx's affected presently in inventory on the lot. I'll wait till spring when they have the parts and some practice doing the recall. So far I have had no problem with my rx. It runs like champ.

well i called my dealer today to find out about the recall and they said they are backed up until march. so i asked to make an appointment and they refused to since i do not have a letter.
i was not happy with the way they just avoided me. Told me to call back when i get a letter. i asked them to check on the computer to see if my car falls into the models that are part of the recall, they just said wait til you get a letter.
the car runs fine but i would like to get this done ASAP. I might be going away in april n may for work, which means it would leave the hassle to my father which i do not want to do.
