I'm having a rough idle situation and hoping a fresh ignition will help. The motor is screwed according to the compression test I got done (rear rotor in the 400 range on two faces), but Mazda won't warranty it at the moment since it starts every time and drives well other than the idle (revs cleanly, no noises or misfires, just hunts between 750-900rpm and shakes a bit). It's got 36K on it and is probably due for a new ignition as it's an 06. I want to stick with OEM for now so as not to jeopardize any warranty claim through next year. I'm just wondering if any vendors have a complete ignition overhaul at a deal. Mazdatrix seems to be the closest, but even so it seems to be within $130 of an upgraded ignition, hoping I can find a better deal. Thanks.

Get the engine fixed, an 06 is still covered by Mazda.

I had another thread about the engine and don't need to rehash it, it's in this subforum if you really want to read it, if you search "horrid" it's probably the only thread that comes up.

Anyway, I didn't find the ignition for $130, I found it for $450 all in. I really wanted to get the BHR kit for $580 (and was planning on it before my compression test), but now I'm holding off until I know if I can get Mazda to do the right thing before next November when the 8 yrs runs out, I don't need to give them another reason to deny my claim by using no OE parts. I'm already sitting on a case of RP synthetic and Idemitsu I bought just before the compression test but will sit on them too and just put in the 5W20 dino they recommend.

 

Make sure you've got the receipts showing all your oil changes have been with 5w20 dino.

Are you looking for a good deal on coils or are you looking for help to get your stealership to do something with your "horrid" engine?

I run the BHR kit, but have the ability to adjust my dwell settings to maximize their benefit. I'm also boosted which is further justification.

In any event, if all you're doing is looking for a good deal on coils and you live in the US, head over to autozone.com, plug in one of the many discount codes you can find here and elsewhere, and buy a set from them.

Once installed, open up your iPhone, android, blackberry, crackajack, etc and create a yearly repeating calendar entry titled "pull coils and exchange them at AZ" as they come with a LIFETIME warranty.

Problem solved

 

Sorry for the confusion, I'm just looking for a complete OEM ignition kit. The other stuff was just in explanation of why I'm not getting an aftermarket kit. Good tip on AutoZone, I'll check it out.

$20 for NGK wire set

dealer for coils which are a little over $50 each or you can roll the dice on aftermarket for cheaper. lifetime warranty is good, except when parts fail at inopportune times.

 

That depends on the dealer and Mazda NA's mood. You've been here long enough to have seen all the tales of denied and approved engine replacements.

That is the biggest BS ever. And engine with below spec compression can certainly run and almost seem ok.

If one or more of your compression figures is really that low, then your engine could easily qualify for warranty replacement. Local dealerships often give people a harder time if the figures are close to the pass/fail range, which i think is 5.9 That's when they'll try to do decarb in an attempt to bring the numbers up just a tiny bit.

The other reason why they might deny you is if you don't have maintenance records as somebody mentioned already above.


But the "your car's compression is below specs but it still runs so we won't warranty it" argument is BS.

 

Probably not the biggest BS ever, but it has left a **** taste in my mouth re: Mazda. It's too bad I enjoy driving the car so much and that, other than an occasional rough idle, it really does drive well. I was pretty upset at first, but then I looked at what else I could pick up with 35K on the clock for $13K, and, well, that was that.

Back on topic though, if I go with non-OEM coils, is this likely to affect my potential warranty claim later? $230 all in at Rock Auto seems like a deal.

 

No, I do not believe using non-oem coils would affect the warranty. They would have to be able to justify that whatever modification you did contributed to the engine failure.

Not to mention I doubt that they'd even be able to tell. Lots of the cheaper aftermarket coils look pretty much the same as the OEM ones.
