Need help on Importing an 8 from US to Canada

ALright so i know there is a thread about this in the Canada forum but i need answers to specific quesitons. So im looking to import an RX8 from the statess to Canada (reason being of certain features). The only problem is.... trust. I found one in California and i dont plan to check out the car in person. SO my question is... what is the SAFEST way to buy the car ?? Like i plan to send a down payment and then wait for him to send the title but how can i FOR SURE know that he will send it and not scam me. ALso i plan on hav ing shipped to buffalo then picking it up there and then crossing the border myself but how can i TRUST that the guys going to drop off the car at the shipping company ? Its really frustrating . Please help me out for those of you who have importted cars before. Thanks in advance.

I have that already. LIke i already knwo the steps involved in importing the car. My only worry is at the "buying" stage. How do i assure i am going to receive the car if i pay for it ?

personally i would never send a payment to a guy hoping he'll send the car (which you haven't even seen yet) and then hope it doesn't get knocked around while being shipped. Maybe there are ways to do it safely. but I'd rather book a $200 flight to see it and do the transactions in person. plus then you can get a nice roadtrip while driving it back.

and I'd ask the question - why is this guy willing to go through all this trouble to ship it, do the extra paperwork and mail the title, and do this and that... can he not find a buyer in california? (aka. maybe there are reasons people arent buying it)

Ye i thought so too. I guess ill find closer and go check it out and do the transactions in person. Its less risky that way. Thanks for the help though

One more question though .,.. if i do go buy it in person etc..... HOw do i get the title and the paperwork to the border 72 hours in advance before i cross ? Wouldnt that mean id have to stay in that state for at least 3 days ??

I guess it depends where you're crossing. I live in winnipeg Manitoba so I left mine at pembina North Dakota(2 minutes from the border) and got picked up. (its about an hour drive from winnipeg to the border) and then got dropped off 3 days later to drive my car back.

it all depends where you're located. and if someone would be willing to drive you back and forth to the border.

I think thats the only other option besides waiting in a hotel for 72 hours.

Ah gotchu. With who exactly did you leave the car with ? I was thinkgin about going to buy it etc.. then leaving then coming back to the guy to take the care but id be too much of a hassle.. might as well do what you did leaving it close to the border. Btw thanks for the info

theres a small place set up in pembina ND. Its called mikes hardware/mikes parcel pick up. http://www.mikesparcelpickup.com/
Apparently there are places like this popping up all over just south of the border.
although I'm sure you could just park it in some random parking lot and it'd be fine.
