Mazda "cant" sale rx8 motors...
Ok so I called mazda to see the price of a new engine, and they told me that they can not sale the engine over the counter to an individual, that the mechanic working on the car has to call mazda, and pretty much have a valid reason for needing a new engine....anyone else get this bull crap excuse before, or is my dealer just gay?

That is total BS, go to www.finishlineperformance.com performance and call them and they will sell you one. However, the warranty is only valid if it is delivered and installed by a dealer.
That said, the warranty is only 12 months/12,000 miles and Mazda reman suck and have been known to be dead on arrival so I would never pay $2,000.00 for one when there are several reputable builders around who can build you something much better for not much more.
Personally I went with Rob at www.pineappleracing.com but if want a lower cost build, www.rotaryinspiredperformance.com is great as well as Brian at http://bdc.cyberosity.com/main.php

mazda said it would cost 2.5k-3k for a new one, just the engine, but couldnt get it, and every where else i looked it was 5k+ but I called Pettit Racing and they said if I send them mine and the block is fine, then it can cost as little as 3.4k including minor porting done to it

The price of a Mazda reman from www.finishlineperformance.com (Rosenthal Mazda dealer) is around $1900.00 + shipping.
That price from Pettit seems fair and they do great work. Hopefully you don't need new housings.

My Mazda dealer in Fredericksburg said the reman motors are done in Richmond. They are $2200 and they charge $2200 labor. 12 months/12,000 is all you get for a warranty. I'd rather buy a new one (2004). My rx8 is early stages of engine failure, the apex seal gets hot, car cuts out and then I have to wait for 30 minutes for the seal to harden cause it loses compression. This is what Mazda told my dealer...Just had the trans rebuilt with new pressure plate, throwout bearing and clutch. I have 159K miles on it, bought it brand new in 2005.

Apex seals get hot? That's a new one. The stuff dealers come up with is crazy. But you cannot really buy a new motor. The housings alone are getting scarce from what I heard and they don't sell new complete motors.

I rather just buy all the parts and build it myself, it's not that hard anyway and it cost about the same.

I gotta admit some dealerships hires nothing but comedians.

You can still order brand new engine, but we're talking about in the 5K range + shipping + ur core + tax

whhhhaaaaAttTTT ? Apex seal gets hot? need to cool it off so it gets hardddd? whoa. That's something new. Last I know the stock Apex seal is made from cast iron and the temperature is not hot enough to "melt" it yet. if it "does" melt then it means some terriorst set a small nuclear reactor in your engine bay and it's activated by your ignition. After that you have a much bigger problem than the engine, the mini-reactor will have a melt down and you will die right there.

I am in Takoma Park in DC and pulled into a dealership to get a the coolant temp sensor for the cluster. There are two on FD's and they said that I probably cooked my engine because it got so hot that is went bad and they will give me a couple thousand if I trade it in. I mean, not the fact that the far is almost 20 years old or anything, And someone buying a car had a heart attack saying they want to buy a car exactly like mine. WTF, I just want my part! Everytime I have gone there, they have tried to backdoor me like I am stupid.

Ok, so the dealership is full of bullsh*t !! I had the car towed there in March cause it cut out at a light and stranded me for about 1 hour. I paid Bill Britt Mazda 1370.00 and they replaced coils and plugs and removed and cleaned the trottle and did something else to the trottle body intake. Then I had it towed 3 times and drove it in once in May for the same problem . Finally they said they called Mazda Engineering and Mazda said it was cutting out because the Apex seal was hot and losing compression, recommendation replace engine. Wow, sounded good to me other than why didn't it ever cut out while I was driving it, not just at stops. So I wonder why it can't keep the rpms up enough not to cut out??? Any suggestions? Appreciate it! Oh I guess my attempt to keep it from cutting out wore out my clutch and just got that replaced last week to the tune of 1045.00 at a local car shop in Fredericksburg. They did a decent job and I'm happy with that. Shifts so smooth!
